Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: 2.3 Bad Moon Rising
Bad Moon Rising marks the big unveiling of the new creature on Mystic Falls supernatural block, and three episodes into Season 2, already one thing is clear: if you turned up to the TVD plot party with particular expectations, prepare to check them at the door by the time the opening credits have rolled.
That being the case, thank goodness we kicked this one off by welcoming back the much beloved and arguably hottest history teacher in the history of education.
MOMENT #1: WELCOME BACK, HOTTER
Damon calls Alaric over (who arrives complete with a new coif that, if we’re honest, belongs in a Head and Shoulders ad) in order to shed some light on the Lockwoods – not through his own knowledge of Mystic Falls, but through Isobel’s research at Duke. The research includes information Isobel had collated not only about vampires but – much to the surprise of everyone present – werewolves. Elena is very curious about this, not in the least because she knows the research her birth mother has undertaken will more than likely yield results about her lineage, and how that fits in with Katherine. Damon however, remains skeptical, but he knows that Isobel’s research holds more than one answer that he’s searching for.
Meanwhile, Mason Lockwood is heading out for an apparent run, not realising that his nephew is following him to what we eventually see is a very, very old underground cellar. Tyler waits for his chance, and ventures underground to explore the cellar. Inside he is visibly troubled by what he finds: chains and harnesses hang off the stone, and a claw mark has been gashed into the wall.
Elsewhere, Matt visits Caroline. While he stands at the door knocking, she stands separated from the door by a big shaft of sunlight. She tests it, and again she begins to burn. Unable to answer without revealing her new condition, so she hides in the house, pretending she’s not there when he then calls her phone and leaves a message asking her to go to Tyler’s party at the waterhole.
As she’s packing to leave, Elena & Stefan discuss her road trip to Duke with Alaric and Damon. Stefan hates the fact that she has to, but he tells her to go – he will stay and take care of Caroline.
Down in the hall, Alaric and Jenna speak. He tries to apologise for not being around more since their kiss, but she tells him she doesn’t want an apology. He just needs to go deal with his past and Isobel – to do what he needs to do.
Now back at the mansion, Tyler asks his mother about ruins. Carol says that they were an part of the original Lockwood plantation house until it burned down. When he queries the existence of the cellar – she says nobody speaks about it, because it still reminds people about slave days of the American south. Mason walks in on their conversation. He doesn’t quite hide the put out look on his face when he learns Tyler has been asking bout the area surrounding the cellar her he has been secretly using.
