Vampire Diaries winning categories in Tubeys 2010
Polls for Tubey Awards were closed and the winners have been announced. The Vampire Diaries won in the following categories:
Best New Show – The Vampire Diaries
Best Single Episode (Drama) – Founder’s Day
Best Season Finale – The Vampire Diaries
Best Unexpected Plot Twist – It’s not Elena, it’s Katherine (season finale)
Best Almost-Romantic-But-Not-Quite Relationship – Damon & Elena
And Ultimate Sexy Beast goes to… Ian Somerhalder!
Our polls were open for 72 hours, and midway through the final day of voting, the virile vampires were separated by less than 200 votes. With six hours remaining, and our finalists still locked in a statistical dead-heat, EW.com’s Sexy Beast special-ops team decided to hide our poll results, and began to plan a special issue of Entertainment Weekly commemorating a tournament that had becoming nothing short of an Internet sensation. When the blood, sweat, and broken fangs were wiped away, who was the winner? Let this be the official reveal: Damon Salvatore eked out a mild upset victory over Edward Cullen by a margin of 138,630 to 134,728, a difference of just 3,902 votes. (Click here for one last look at how our entire, 64-beast bracket played out.)
Maybe it was a last-minute Tweet from Somerhalder himself –”That Pattinson guy will end up kicking my butt, however thanks for taking the time, that’s really cool : )” –that turned the tide in favor of his character. Or maybe it was a get-out-the-vote campaign by Somerhalder’s co-star Matt Davis (Alaric). “I think he text-messaged Justin Bieber and said ‘Hey, would you please vote for my friend?’ I’m not even kidding,” Somerhalder tells EW. But whether you happened to be Team Damon or Team Edward — or even Team Wolverine, Team Alcide, Team Neytiri, or Team Beast (from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, naturally) — we thank you for your participation and enthusiasm.
For more on EW.com’s Sexy Beast tournament — including an interview with winner Ian Somerhalder—pick up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, on stands August 27.

Where is Stefan heading in season 2?
Stefan seemed different in the Vampire Diaries finale. Where is he heading? —Katherine
MICKEY: Interestingly, it’s Katherine’s arrival that awakens something in Stefan. “He accepts that he’s a vampire more; he’s less plagued by being a victim and being run over by his brother,” Paul Wesley says. “He becomes more proactive, and he knows how to have fun sometimes.” In other words, get ready for Freaky Friday: Sibling Vampire Edition.

David Anders Talks to TV Fanatic About Vampire Diaries Return, Character
David Anders does not know if his character on The Vampire Diaries is related to Katherine or not.
But the actor can confirm that he’ll return for season two of The CW hit, which kicks off on September 9 and which you can watch a preview for HERE.
In an exclusive interview with TV Fanatic, the veteran TV star dishes on Uncle John and what the second season has in store for other residents of Mystic Falls…
What can we look forward to this season?
There’s the big werewolf storyline cooking up. As far as I’m concerned, Elena walks in after Katherine slices my fingers off and stabs me and she’s got a big decision to make. There’s a lot of Katherine and Elena. Nina’s got a lot of work.
Why did John kill Anna?
The fact that she’s a vampire. He saw that she might have dragged my nephew into vampiredom. I don’t think John approved of that. John is Jeremy’s only male figure in his life, so he treats it like a father/son relationship. It was a hard decision for the producers to make, to let her character go.
Will Uncle John and Elena find a way to get along?
It’s extremely difficult for Elena to see any good in me. I’m not well liked around Mystic Falls [laughs].
Were you approached for the role of John?
Yeah. They came to me. I knew Ian Somerhalder. He’s a friend of mine, and I thought it would be fun to go out there and play vampire for a little bit. It proved to be just that. I was impressed with the level of acting on the show, and the writing and the dark, totally grounded in reality.
If you were in John’s position, would you have made the same decisions he did?
No, probably not. I would look out for my daughter’s best interest. John is so rooted with his thinking that vampires are the bane of anybody’s existence. That’s what he’s been taught, and grew to believe. He’s been conditioned and conditioned.

Kristin tells us we’ll see much more Alaric (and Damon) this season
Britney in Dallas, Texas: I’m so over Stelena and Delena on The Vampire Diaries. Please tell me we will see more Dalaric!
You can rest easy because we will be seeing plenty of Damon and Alaric teaming up in season two. We asked the show’s very own Buffy (spin-off idea: Alaric The Vampire Slayer!) Matt Davis, about the unlikely duo’s partnership and here’s what he told us: “Our bromance is definitely developing. You’ll see much more of that for sure. I love Ian to pieces and I love working with him and I think our chemistry as friends and the way Kevin and Julie write the two of them together, just the archetypes of the two characters together I think fit really well.” If that wasn’t cute enough for you, Matt recently tweeted a picture of the duo’s nifty supernatural rings with the caption, “Wonder Twin power unite in shape of a bromance!!!” Um, I die.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev: ‘I’m sure Elena’s had dreams about Damon’
As if “The Vampire Diaries”heroine Nina Dobrev didn’t have enough on her plate. Last season, her character Elena was torn between two of the hottest vampires broadcast television has ever seen.
This year, Nina’s got her own set of fangs as she gears up to bring Katherine Pierce, Elena’s evil vampire doppelganger, back to life.
We met Katherine in a series of flashbacks last year, but if the shocking Season 1 finale taught us anything, it’s that we haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of our new favorite villain. I caught up with Dobrev on the Vampire Diaries set in Atlanta and couldn’t resist gushing a bit about her performance. As sweet as she is, Nina doesn’t miss a beat playing the conniving back-stabber.
With all the attention that Katherine is getting as we gear up for Season 2, I didn’t want to forget about Elena, either. I had to ask Nina — if Damon (Ian Somerhalder) really had kissed Elena instead of Katherine, would Elena have kissed him back?
“I mean, I’m sure Elena has had dreams about Damon,” Dobrev says. “I’m not sure if she was put in the position to kiss him what she would do. I feel like she has high morals, and she loves Stefan (Paul Wesley). It’s always been Stefan.”
Don’t expect those dreams to come true any time soon, vamp fans. “I think that Elena’s feelings for Damon are still friendly,” Dobrev says. “She’s concerned about him, and she definitely cares about him, but she and Stefan have been through so much. She wants to make that work.”
Elena’s love life right now is easy compared to her family situation. The last time we saw the Gilberts, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) had swallowed a bottle of pills and a vial of blood in the hopes of becoming a vampire, and Elena’s Uncle John (David Anders) — who is also her biological dad — had met the wrong end of Katherine’s knife.
And you thought your family was crazy!
“I can’t say what happens to them,” Dobrev says, “I don’t want to ruin the fun! Things aren’t going to get any easier in Elena’s family situation, I’ll say that much.”
Stay tuned to Zap2it for much more from my set visit with Nina Dobrev and the rest of “The Vampire Diaries” cast.

Official titles for episode 2 & 3 of season two
Spoiler TV confirmed episode two and three of Vampire Diaries new season are titled Brave New World and Bad Moon Rising, respectively. In fact, Michael Trevino tweeted a cool set photo of the third episode a while ago. Only 17 days till the year of the Kat starts!
TV Guide’s Keck chats to Taylor Kinney + first official photo of Mason
Don’t get a Lockwood angry. You won’t like them when they’re angry. In The Vampire Dairies‘ September 9 premiere, Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) is surprised to see his long-absent, black sheep of the family Uncle Mason (Taylor Kinney) turn up for the funeral of his dad, the mayor. But a bigger surprise comes when Mason drops the bomb that werewolfism runs in the Lockwood bloodline!
“Mason has learned to harness his rage and is going to serve as a mentor to Tyler,” says Taylor. “I’ve come to teach Tyler that there are choices he can make to control his destiny as a human…or otherwise.”
Nina Dobrev (Elena/Katherine) adds, “Taylor’s been adjusting really well. I don’t envy when new people come [on set] because we’ve all already created this family bond, but everyone’s really accepted him.” The same won’t hold true in Mystic Falls, reveals Ian Somerhalder (Damon). “Mason’s a really nice guy, but Damon makes it difficult for him to be nice,” says Ian. “He really pisses Damon off.”
“Yeah, we don’t get along,” echoes Taylor. “Historically, the Salvatores haven’t gotten along with the Lockwoods for ages, and having a new Lockwood in town doesn’t sit well.”
It hasn’t been lost on him that he’s following in the werewolf paw prints of another famous Taylor — Twilight hottie Taylor Lautner. “My brother gave me a few ‘Team Jacob’ magnets to mess with me,” says Taylor, who apparently sports impressive abs of his own. “I don’t know if I stack up to Mr. Lautner, but we’ll see.”
As for competing with all those sexy werewolves on a certain HBO series, Taylor says he finds it perplexing that “every time a werewolf takes off his pants on True Blood, he transforms.” Mason’s transformation will be more traditional—dependent upon a full moon. And the actor says he’s well-equipped for his first howling scene. “I grow hair like crazy!”

Vampire Diaries cast filming first season 2 flashbacks + an extra on his set experience
Vampire Stalkers was on set while filming was taking place this Friday. As the crew set up at what is called the Old Lockwood Manor, we wondered how much we would see. I can tell you that they set up for what looked like a party scene. They filmed inside and outside. Beautiful lanterns and flowers along the banisters set the scene. We got really excited once they started pulling in the horse trailers. Unfortunately, it began to light and rain, so we didn’t stick it out as long as usual but we had an extra that was filming that night inside, so we still hoped for a few details.
You can read the rest of the article as well as Danny Craig‘s experience at Vampire Stalkers. Plus, scroll down for more photos.

Ian Somerhalder makes Best and Worst Vampires on Film and TV
3. Ian Somerhalder, The Vampire Diaries
Kevin Williamson’s terrific series on the CW network casts Somerhalder (formerly Boone on Lost) as Damon Salvatore, the bad boy vampire in hot pursuit of the woman his brother Stefan (Paul Wesley) loves. Somerhalder deftly balances dangerous and funny without compromising either quality. Says Damon: “I do believe in killing the messenger. Know why? It sends a message.”

Some more Ian outtakes
Paul Wesley on Damon kissing Elena: “At the end of the day, he [Stefan] absolutely loves his brother.”
I was on set in Atlanta with Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder while they shot some emotional scenes between the brothers – including the scene you see in the trailer below, where Damon fills Stefan in on that fateful kiss.
On a break from filming, Paul sat down to talk to me about Stefan’s head space when he finds out that Damon kissed Elena – or at least, the girl he thought was Elena.
“Oh, the kiss. Stefan’s first reaction is, ‘I’m going to kill you. Like I am going to literally kill you, rip you apart. This is my beautiful girl. This is the love of my life. Stay the hell away,’” Wesley says.
Ooh, feisty.
Now that Stefan’s off the human blood, he’s gone back to being the rational brother, and he hesitates before the whole fratricide thing becomes an issue. “The thing is,” Wesley explains, “Damon and Stefan have done this dance before. All Stefan is thinking is ‘I’m not going to let you do this to me.’ Eventually, his second reaction is to realize that his anger has never gotten him anywhere with Damon. Fighting fire with fire is just going to get you fire.”
Carrying on the pretense of being Elena was just another way for Katherine to toy with the Salvatores — her favorite pastime. This time, though, Stefan is going to do his best to keep her from coming between them.
“He’s furious with Damon for acting on his feelings for Elena, but more than that, he’s afraid that with everything that’s going on, Damon is going to shut down again. He’s going to lose all the humanity that Stefan and Elena have cultivated in him. Stefan can’t let that happen. At the end of the day, he absolutely loves his brother, and that’s a significant element of the story. In my opinion, it’s the most significant element of the story.”
Wesley pauses and grins. “He’s still really freakin’ pissed, though.”

Two new HQ stills from The Return
TV Fanatic interviews Steven: “He [Jeremy] doesn’t have any humanity anymore.”
In the latest Vampire Diaries trailer, Elena tries to shake her brother awake, following his first season finale overdose.
Well, spoiler alert, fans: Jeremy Gilbert lives! We know this because Steven R. McQueen spoke with TV Fanatic this week and previewed his character’s upcoming arc on the series. Excerpts from the interview are below…
What can you tell us about Jeremy this season?
Obviously I can’t give away everything, when it comes to if he turns into a vampire or not. I can say this: Jeremy has been pushed around quite a bit. He’s lost his parents, lost his first love, and all of the sudden there’s this new girl that he relates to because she’s an outsider as well, so they connect on that level. When he loses her, she’s the last person, and he lets himself go emotionally. He’s a little cold to the world now. Instead of being pushed around and wearing his heart on his sleeve; he’s about to push back a little bit.
Do you think Jeremy initiated the change for all of the wrong reasons?
He doesn’t have any humanity anymore. He doesn’t trust his sister because she betrayed him, he doesn’t really trust anybody and everyone views him as a kind of monster, so I think his mindset is “everyone already sees me as a monster, why not become one?”
Obviously, Jeremy wakes up, changed or not changed. Can you tell me how life goes when he does wake up?
Jeremy is a little more calculated. He always had his heart on his sleeve, and he doesn’t [use] emotion anymore. He thinks logically of how he can control the situation.
Will Jeremy and Elena be able to repair their relationship?
They actually get into a fist fight in the first episode [laughs].
Will Jeremy and Katherine have a run-in?
Yes.
I think the whole Vampire Diaries fan base was in uproar when Anna died.
[Malese Jow is] a very talented actress, and she’s a great girl. It was a bummer to lose her. The writers want people go through an emotional roller coaster. We had an intense connection, and things were finally feeling alright for Jeremy.
Are there any new girls in Jeremy’s future?
I don’t think, emotionally, he’s going to let himself open up to any situation like that. Physically, I’m sure he’ll indulge a little bit.
Last season, Jeremy went from brooding to care-free (when Damon erased his memory) and then back again. What was it like to play these opposing emotions?
Jeremy is just an interesting character because he’s never in the same mental state. He’s always changing. The only thing about when he made that switch is he went from being aware. He was totally out of loop when he was all happy.
If you had the chance, would you choose to be immortal?
Oh yeah. I think, anytime we can break away from society, and break the rules, I would definitely try to indulge in that.
Are you drawn to darker characters?
Being an actor is being make believe. Any time there’s more to play with, the more fun it is for me. I like characters with emotional issues, and I enjoy playing the outsider. Everyone wants me to play the boy next door, but I try to break away from that.
We spoke to Jessica Szohr about Piranha 3D, and you star in that movie, as well. What is your character like?
I’m a complete nerd. I’m not getting into any trouble, I’m very straight edge. I’m in love with Jessica Szohr’s character and she’s older than me and has a boyfriend. I have no chance in the world. We get into this Girls Gone Wild situation where I try to protect her, and then the fish start attacking. Honestly, it’s such a fun movie. I saw a little bit of it, and it’s hilarious and scary at the same time. It’s like Snakes on a Plane, but with fish. It’s much darker and gruesome than The Vampire Diaries.

L.J. Smith on new Vampire Diaries prequel trilogy, contests and more
The following quote contains spoilers for “The Return” trilogy, so be aware.
I’ve just emerged from a very intense session of negotiation with the result that, barring my publishers rejecting Midnight, there will be a new arc of three books in The Vampire Diaries series. My choices for titles are Phantom, Evensong and Eternity, but first thing this morning my agent informed me that they are looking to me for suggestions for a name for the entire arc (the last one they called The Return). If anyone has a nice title and no use for it, email me. The books are about Elena and Stefan et. al. starting at Dalcrest College, and finding themselves playing the role of Spirit Hunters (already suggested by me) or just plain hunting serial murderers who may or may not be mystical. If you do think of something, and we use it, I’ll send you an autographed book!
You can read the rest of L.J.Smith’s post over at her blog, thanks to Vampire-Diaries.net for the heads up!

Full synopsis for The Return
KATHERINE HAS RETURNED WITH A VENGEANCE — Picking up on the same night as last season’s finale, Elena (Nina Dobrev) arrives home to a nightmare as she discovers Uncle John’s and Jeremy’s fate. At the hospital, Sheriff Forbes (guest star Marguerite MacIntyre) is comforted by Matt (Zach Roering), Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) while she waits to hear if Caroline (Candice Accola) will survive the car accident. After a confusing conversation with Elena about the night’s events, Damon is the first to realize that Katherine (also played by Nina Dobrev) has returned. Katherine’s arrival sends Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon on a path to find out what she wants, why she’s back, and how much of a threat she is to the people they love. Meanwhile, still reeling from his father’s death, Tyler (Michael Trevino) is surprised when his charming and mysterious uncle, Mason Lockwood (guest star Taylor Kinney, “Trauma”), arrives to console the family.

Vampire Diaries Star Michael Trevino Talks “Lockwood Curse” with TV Fanatic
While Katherine will be the main focus of The Vampire Diaries this fall, viewers shouldn’t forget about Michael Trevino’s Tyler.
As previously reported, this character’s family, background and inner rage will be on full display in the fall. Trevino spoke with TV Fanatic this week about the transformations ahead for Tyler…
Throughout season one, Tyler was a hot-tempered human. How excited are you to be a supernatural character?
There’s going to be more storylines, and it’ll show a different side of Tyler. Like you said, all of season one it showed how hot-headed he was, snapping at everybody. Not only that, but for me to be get into the supernatural element and find out the lineage of these werewolves and such, it’s gonna be, not a hard task, but something to look forward to. There wasn’t much of Tyler going on in season one, so they want to throw all of these projects at me now for the new season. I’m ready for it!
Do you have to go through any makeup or prosthetics for the transformation?
I haven’t. All I’ve done so far is some green screen work. We might actually be doing some CGI, so we’re testing some things out right. No word yet on actually prosthetics on my face.
Imagine the shock of seeing yourself.
For me, just the season one finale with the changing of the eye, that alone was a shock for me because I wasn’t able to see it before. So I saw it with the fans, and with everyone else watching the finale. That was exciting. Now I’m even more excited to see how they do the transformation. I think they’re still trying to figure that out.
Is there going to be a lot of self-discovery for Tyler?
Yes there is. My uncle, Mason Lockwood, is coming into town. He has a big part in dealing with that. He has some information and secrets that he can share with me and his own personality. He’s got this curse, too, the Lockwood curse, so he feeds Tyler bits and pieces of information here and there.
How is his relationship with his uncle?
They’re not really close because Mason is the black sheep of the family. He was never really in Mystic Falls. He was there for a bit and then just vanished. With him coming back because of the death of my father and his brother, it’s strange. They’re not close, but he doesn’t have his father anymore, and he needs an older male companion. Mason is going to be there for him, and help develop my character.
Next season, are you picking up right where you left off?
Yes we are. It’s exactly from the car crash with Caroline in the hospital, Katherine chopping off Uncle John’s fingers. We are starting off right where it ended. They wrote an awesome season premiere, so we’re looking forward to everyone seeing it.
You were working on finding a wolf as your transformed self, have you found one yet?
I don’t think we’ve made a final decision. But I have played around with a couple of wolves that have some on set. The screen tests that they’ve done with me, they’ve done with the wolves. So I think we’re still in the audition process with them. It’s awesome. They’re such beautiful animals and they can be very intimidating. But these have been raised in homes and are very well-mannered. When we need them to growl on cue, hopefully they’ll be able to do that.
Do you have anything in common with Tyler?
He’s got a temper and I think everybody has a temper from time to time. The only thing right off the bat is I’m very athletic and I did play a lot of varsity sports in high school…It is fun to play, though. I can explore that inner rage that I posses. Sometimes when people get angry, we want to scream at the top of our lungs. When I go to work, I get to fight Steve McQueen’s character, and I get to beat him up and take out my aggression on him, so I guess it works out [Laughs].
What else can we look forward to this season?
We’re filming episode three right now, and I can tell you that there is a lot of Lockwood going around. We’re seeing the day-to-day of Tyler, and a lot of scenes take place in my house now. That didn’t happen in season one. I don’t think we got to know Tyler as whole, just an angry, bully of a kid in season one. Now, we’ll be able to see Tyler when he’s calm and not trying to pick a fight with somebody. Episode three is a big episode. There’s something really important that Tyler realizes and there’s a big revelation for Tyler.
Even though his relationship with his father was rocky, do we see Tyler mourn over his death?
Oh yeah. In the season premiere, you will see Tyler and how he deals with the fact that his father is on. All I can say is, it’s not pretty. He takes it pretty rough.
Trevino also promised flashbacks on season two related to the founding families of Mystic Falls, specifically the Lockwoods and Salvatores. Needless the say, we cannot wait.

Disney’s Tiya Sircar Guest Stars in Season Two of “The Vampire Diaries”
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 18, 2010
Disney veteran Tiya Sircar (“The Suite Life on Deck,” “Hannah Montana”) has joined the cast of popular CW series “The Vampire Diaries” in a guest-starring role as Amiee Bradley, a high school student who becomes involved in the supernatural activities in Mystic Falls.
“It’s been so much fun working with such a great cast,” says Sircar. “I’d love to come back for more episodes, but nobody is safe in Mystic Falls! Working with the boys in this show could make a girl’s head spin. They’re all so easy on the eyes. But what’s better, they happen to be really sweet as well.”
Sircar’s potentially recurring role will debut in episode three of the upcoming second season of the series. But Sircar is no stranger to working with hunky leading men. Her role in the 2009 blockbuster “17 Again” had Sircar slapping teen sensation Zac Efron, on whom her character had a major crush. In her next big screen role in the upcoming comedy “Friends with Benefits” Sircar is working with the king of sexy himself, Justin Timberlake.
Named one of the 40 hottest South Asians in the World by Anokhi Magazine, Sircar made the 2010 Sexy & Successful List. After popping up in fashion magazines for her red carpet style, Sircar took time out of her filming schedule last summer to give fans organic and eco-friendly beauty advice as a celebrity guest editor for BeautyBlitz.

Zap2it interviews Paul Wesley on Vampire Diaries set: “Stefan may or may not fall victim to Katherine.”
When Zap2it was invited to the set of “The Vampire Diaries,” I had the chance to watch Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, and Nina Dobrev shoot some exciting scenes — but after a long day of sitting in the sticky Georgia heat, I was thrilled to retire to the air-conditioned comfort of Paul’s trailer.
Okay, okay. So maybe hanging out on his couch would’ve been pretty cool regardless of the temperature. It wasn’t exactly a hard day at the office.
After spending Season 1 watching the Team Stefan vs. Team Damon Twitter wars, I had to ask Wesley to weigh in on the eternal question. I put him on the spot and asked him for his best pitch – and I have to say, he melted my Team Matt heart.
“I think, personally, that once Damon gets what he wants, he throws it out the door,” Wesley says. “And I think Stefan is genuinely in love with Elena. Not to get sappy, but I think that counts for something.”
Awww.
Of course, Stefan’s got another lady in his life this season… whether he wants her around or not, Katherine is back, and she’s got a bone to pick with Stefan.
“I think there’s probably a part of him that’s happy to see her,” Wesley says. “Maybe a very, very small part. It’s like seeing an ex-girlfriend that you once were just completely in love with, and years go by, and you realize that it was for the wrong reasons – but the love that you had was there, and the hurt that she gave you is still there.”
Don’t worry. As far as I know, Stefan is still completely devoted to Elena — but that doesn’t mean Katherine isn’t going to rile him up a bit. “When he sees her, he’s kind of like ‘This is ridiculous,’ but he can’t help but have a little feeling of hurt come in,” Paul tells me. “The thing that really comes into play is that Katherine’s incredibly smart, incredibly powerful physically and mentally, and very capable of manipulating Stefan. He may or may not fall victim to it.”
Such a tease!
Stay tuned to Zap2it for much more from my set visit with Paul Wesley and the rest of “The Vampire Diaries” cast.

‘The Vampire Diaries’ prequel novel: An exclusive cover peek
While Damon from The Vampire Diaries is busy tearing up the polls in EW’s official Sexy Beast competition, the show’s other bloodsucking protagonist is set to get a series of prequel books named after him. HarperCollins Children’s Books and Alloy Entertainment have announced that they will be releasing Stefan’s Diaries #1: Origins, the first in a planned trilogy of novels that will shed sunlight on the vampire brothers’ long, troubled history, including the Civil War-era romance that turned them against each other. The CW series, like fellow hyper-sexualized-neckbiter show True Blood, was based on a run of novels, and although it doesn’t appear that original author L. J. Smith will be penning this new trilogy, her creations have come full circle back into book form. The first entry of Stefan’s Diaries is scheduled to hit bookstores in November.
Fans of the show, what do you think? Will you still be gripped by the characters without all the brooding, occasionally shirtless eye-candy? How about those of you who read the original books?

TV Guide’s Matt Roush on whether or not Anna will show up again
Question: I’ve only recently started watching The Vampire Diaries, as I wanted to wait for the overall reception of Season 1. But once I started, I got fully sucked in and I’m absolutely loving it now. [POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT] However, I’m having a hard time letting go of my lovely namesake Anna. With her ambivalent personality traits and the story line she was given, I thought she was one of the most interesting characters on the show. I have to admit that her demise in the finale hit me quite hard. Is there really no chance at all that she survived somehow? — Anna
Matt Roush: Looked to me like she was a goner, but you know how it goes on shows like this: Just because you die, or die again as the case may be, doesn’t necessarily mean you’re dead for good. And even if she did bite the eternal dust, I’d think there’s potential for some juicy flashbacks as we get more of everyone’s back story. And don’t you imagine she’d at the very least haunt Jeremy’s dreams? Beyond that, I haven’t a clue whether we’ll see Anna again, as I refuse to get ahead of the story, especially on shows like this. From a critical point of view, though, it’s important to believe that characters like this can actually perish even in a supernatural series, or there’d be nothing at stake (pun unintended). Keeps you caring, I’d think.

Advance review of The Vampire Diaries: The Complete First Season DVD
The Vampire Diaries Season 1 will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on August 31 (only two weeks away!), and thanks to Warner Home Video, we’ve been able to take an advance look at the set, which collects the 22 episodes of the show’s first season. This review will be split into sections, and hopefully will be in-depth enough for those of you who just can’t wait for the end of the month.
Packaging/Design: The first thing you’ll notice with any DVD set is the packaging, right? Well… the first thing I noticed here was how thin the packaging for this season set is. It’s much slimmer than comparative sets forSmallville and Supernatural and about 1/4 the size of the X-Files DVD sets of old. Just because it takes up less space, though, doesn’t mean it’s packaged in a way that is inferior. Discs do not overlap each other and are easy to get out.
Individual disc art isn’t as cool as what we had with something like Smallville, nor are there any fancy menus, really… most title screens look like the front cover. The time not spent on disc art, however, is better spent on extras, which I’ll get to in a moment.
When you slide out the set, there’s a photo of Ian, Nina, and Paul on the back cover.
The Episodes: Hate to keep going back to Smallville, but that’s how this site network started and a lot of people have asked me what else I’d recommend, and this is definitely it. The pilot might start off a bit… well… Twilight-y (sorry Julie and Kevin), but as soon as Ian Somerhalder showed up as Damon, throwing a wrench into the dynamic, it became something else entirely. Episodes #2 and #3 actually also reminded me a bit of early Smallvilles (I felt I’d seen the “super powered guy and the football team” story before, and I’ll surely see it again), but then around episode 4 or 5, something fantastic happened. [Beware of spoilers from here on out] We learned about the history of Mystic Falls and that people knew about the Salvatores and their true nature. Kevin Williamson joked at the Paley Festival that TVD is actually more Dark Shadows than Twilight, and he’s right.
That’s not all that TVD Season 1 pulled off. A rarity in TV this day and age, instead of losing its way in the back half of the season, the show actually got better and better. Every other episode seemed to have a new revelation, connection, or surprise. New characters such as Alaric or Anna came in and were quickly embraced. Other new characters like Jonathan Gilbert came in, just asking for themselves to be stabbed a few times. I think I could actually have a weekend marathon of The Vampire Diariesand not get bored, and I can’t say that for many series.
If you haven’t seen The Vampire Diaries, this is the perfect way to get sucked in. But if you feel the same way I did about the first 3 episodes or so — give it a chance. You’ll thank yourself. There’s a reason this is one of The CW’s top shows ratings-wise – it has elements and characters that can just draw anyone in.
One “hook” for the series with me – or three hooks, actually – is that I had been a fan of the show’s three lead actors prior to seeing the show. Nina Dobrev was fantastic as a single teenage mother “Mia” on Degrassi, and I still get a chuckle when I remember the name of Mia’s daughter on the show, “Bella.” (Fortunately, Edward and Jacob are far, far away) Paul Wesley I had first seen on Smallville as Lucas, the half-brother of Lex Luthor, and I’d been hoping for a return appearance from him ever since. It’ll probably never happen now, though it would be a great way to get some of the Vampire Diaries fans to watchSmallville again. And then there’s Ian Somerhalder. I first saw him in the movie The Rules of Attraction and quickly he entered my brain as someone that, if I were a casting director, I’d totally go after for a role. Funny enough, in 2004 I suggested him for “Barnabas” in the WB’s Dark Shadows remake… instead, they went with the less charismatic Alec Newman. I also thought he would have made a terrific young Bruce Wayne if Smallville would have gone that route. One might argue they sort of did, when they cast Ian as “Adam Knight.” Of course, before Damon, people now know Ian for his role as Boone on LOST as well.
The supporting players are just as solid, with every one of them bringing something unique to their roles. I was surprised when watching the DVD extras to see how young Sara Canning is… not that she looks any different on the show, but the manner in which she carries Aunt Jenna is a totally different beast. The DVD extras also reminded me of how I hope we see Bonnie, Matt, and Tyler more in the coming season. Finally, it’s so weird to see the pilot again to see how much Steven R. McQueen has changed since they shot the first episode!
The creative team also drew me to this project. Dawson’s Creek made me fall in love with The WB, though I admit I kind of fell out of it when Kevin Williamson left the show. (He did, however, return for the series finale which I am not too embarrassed to admit made me cry like a baby. Curse you, Williamson!) I still intend to see more of Julie Plec’s work from Kyle XY; it’s always been on my “to-watch” list but I haven’t gotten to at this point.
The Extras: Why, oh, why can’t most big-studio sets be this packed? My favorite extra feature on this set, of course, is the look at fans of the show and the fandom surrounding The Vampire Diaries. Carina Mackenzie of the L.A. Times (aka @cadlymack) is interviewed as is Vee from the excellent Vampire-Diaries.net, and it really reminded me about how – at least for now – it’s a really great fandom to be a part of. All of the principal cast is interviewed in addition to the producers. Other special features include a look at the development of the series and a separate feature on the casting; commentary on the pilot with Julie Plec, Kevin Williamson, and Marcos Siega; unaired/deleted scenes; BLOOPERS!!!!; the “Darker Truth” webisode series; and even a downloadable audiobook of L.J. Smith’s Vampire Diaries novel, “The Awakening.” The front cover boasts “8 hours of extras,” and I am so pleased.
In Conclusion: This set is definitely recommended. Looking for something to watch before all the shows return, or if you’d even just like to catch up on this one before Season 2 begins on September 9… either way, you’re in luck. 5 out of 5. A great set. Even if you claim to hate the “vampire” genre, it’s a solid watch, and there’s surely something you’d like.

New Vampire Diaries spoilers from The Ausiello Files and Watch With Kristin
Question: I just bought the first season of Vampire Diaries and watched every episode back-to-back. Can you help out a new (sleep-deprived) fan with any season 2 spoilers that may have popped up since Comic-Con? —Brandon
Ausiello: At Sunday’s Teen Choice Awards, Katerina Graham told us that Bonnie will become “even less tolerant” of the vampires this season. “She is going to become quite the power player among the supernatural [set]. I think she is going to be noticed by some of the big baddies this season. She is gaining powers rapidly this season, so I encourage all the villains and the bad boyfriends to stay clear of the Bennett witch!” – The Ausiello Files
Shane in Pittsburgh, Pa.: Will Jenna finally find out the truth about vampires on The Vampire Diaries?
Nope, you can expect Aunt Jenna to remain blissfully unaware of the supernatural happenings in Mystic Falls, at least for now. How can that be when she was in the house while Katherine was chopping off Uncle John’s fingers and Jeremy was upstairs downing blood and pills? Executive producer Julie Plec tells us, “We’ll learn in the first episode that she was actually out talking to the fire marshal. Katherine actually lured Jenna out of the house before all the craziness happened.” Finger slicing aside, that Katherine seems like a fine young lady, no?
Beth in Phoenix, Ariz.: Got any scoop on TVD‘s flashback episodes?
We have three tidbits about the three, possibly four, planned walks down the Salvatore brothers’ memory lane:
- We chatted with Bianca Lawson, a.k.a. the original Bennett witch, who spilled that “Emily Bennett’s coming back to maybe be a good witch, maybe be bad witch.” Maybe we’ll finally see her make the deal with the devil himself, Damon, which sealed the vamps in the tomb?
- When we spoke with Kevin Williamson at Comic-Con he confirmed that we will be seeing some of season one’s dearly departed via flashbacks. Our fingers are crossed for the return of fan favorite Anna.
- Expect to learn about a lot more about the infamous Katherine. Williamson teased, “Why wasn’t she in the tomb? How did she escape? Where did she go? Why did she come to Mystic Falls to begin with? What brought her to Mystic Falls? There’s all those fun questions that we’re gonna explore.” – Watch With Kristin
Nina Dobrev for Saturday Night Magazine (photoshoot & interview)
We admit it: we’ve officially been bitten by the vampire craze and The CW’s The Vampire Diaries (Thursdays at 8 p.m.) is our latest fang-filled obsession. With equal parts teen angst and blood-sucking goodness, we are hooked on the Elena, Stefan, Damon love triangle. Throw sexy vamp Katherine into the mix and we can’t wait to find out what happens in the new season, premiering this month. We caught up with series star Nina Dobrev, 21, at Westwood’s Hotel Palomar for a taste of what we can expect.
SNMag: What initially drew you to the show and the character of Elena?
Nina Dobrev: Well, I remember reading it and just being drawn to the fact that she was this average girl who was damaged in many ways and then I did some research and found out that I would probably end up having to play Katherine too, who is the complete opposite. This is one of the rarest, coolest opportunities in television, to play two people on the same medium.
SNMag: What can you tell us about Katherine coming back at the end of the finale last season?
ND: The only thing I can really tell you is that she’s back, and if I told you any more I’d have to kill you or bite you or something. But, yeah, she is back and you can just imagine now that she’s back in action things are just going to get more and more intense. It’s fun to see what she is going to do because she is just so spontaneous and crazy, but I’m just as in the dark as you are because they don’t tell us anything until we get there.
SNMag: Who do you have more fun playing – Elena or Katherine?
ND: I think like anything in life, whatever you’re deprived from or you don’t get to do as often, you end up enjoying more than anything else because it’s like a guilty pleasure. So, whenever I play Katherine, because I do it seldom, I have the most fun playing her.
SNMag: Do you think Damon and Elena could ever have a good, healthy relationship?
ND: “Damon” and “healthy” in the same sentence? That’s funny! I don’t know, I mean, with the way the season ended, it doesn’t seem as though Damon and Elena are an item in any way because he didn’t really care for her. He chose Katherine. Little does he know he is totally falling in love with Elena but Elena truly doesn’t feel that way. She sees him as a buddy. She sees him as her boyfriend’s brother, and, at times, a pain in the butt. But their friendship and their chemistry are definitely growing.
SNMag: If it were up to you, which brother would you choose?
ND: Well, I would choose the other brother, definitely – or maybe a mixture of the two. I think both characters have different qualities that are very appealing so it just depends. If you combine them, they make the perfect man because Stefan is committed and sweet and protective and loving, and Damon is spontaneous and crazy and fun and exciting. Every woman has to find that guy who pushes all her buttons, and Damon and Stefan push different buttons for Elena.
SNMag: What’s it like shooting in Atlanta?
ND: I like it, I really like it. It took a second to get used to in the beginning because, like any city, you have to give it a shot and explore and find out the little quirks about the town. But once we did, I found so many great restaurants and such amazing food and really great, nice, fun people and it’s so different from New York and LA and the big cities. We get an opportunity to be real, average people and hang out and go to restaurants and watch movies and not take ourselves too seriously.
SNMag: Do you guys all hang out off set?
ND: You’d think we’d get sick of each other by now, but we don’t somehow! Everyone is so sweet and supportive and loving and caring for each other. We can’t wait to get back to Atlanta and start filming again.
SNMag: Do you ever get to go back to Canada to visit your family?
ND: Actually, I just went back home to Toronto and hung out with my mom and my brother. I don’t get to go as often as I’d like to because of my work schedule but when I do it makes the time with them so much cooler. I’m really close with my mom so I miss her a lot and she travels a lot. She comes to visit me in Atlanta so I get to see her often that way.
SNMag: Since the show has become more popular, have you had any interesting fan encounters?
ND: Yeah, I’ve had tons of interesting fan encounters! This one time, I was at yoga with my mom and this girl came up to me while I was basically half-naked in a dressing room and she was asking me about the show and asked for an autograph and a picture with me while I’m sitting there, like I said, half-naked!
SNMag: We’ve heard that you’re a very big coffee and chocolate connoisseur – any specific preferences?
ND: Well, if we’re going to talk about coffee we’re going to have to talk about Starbucks and Coffee Bean! I change it up a lot, I love chai lattes and caramel macchiatos and double chocolate chip frappucinos with whipped cream…the sweeter the better, basically! When I have chai, I have dirty chai lattes with chocolate espresso in it. It’s a good pick me up. When it comes to just chocolate, lava cake is my absolute favorite. Hot, molten lava cake!
SNMag: What’s your feeling on this whole vampire craze? Do you keep up with shows like True Blood or the Twilight series?
ND: We’re all aware and supportive of each other’s shows and I have a lot of friends in them. I just finished shooting a movie with Kellan [Lutz], actually, a couple days ago. Vampires are hot. They’re sexy and mysterious and dangerous.
SNMag: Can we expect any werewolves on the show next season? Could you give us any hints?
ND: I can’t tell you about that. Maybe, maybe not, but I’m not allowed to talk about it. Sorry!
SNMag: When you’re not filming, how do you spend your free time?
ND: To be honest, whenever I have free time I just sleep. I chill and keep everything low-key. I’m a very low-key person because the rest of my life is so fast-paced and exciting. I like to just relax.
SNMag: Are there any spots in Los Angeles that you especially enjoy when you’re here?
ND: I hang out in Santa Monica a lot. If I can, I love to be by the water. And I love 25 Degrees, they have the best burgers and so does 8 Oz.! I go shopping on Melrose. I go to the Melrose flea market on Sundays if I can.
SNMag: You mentioned the movie with Kellan Lutz, Death Games, what can you share about it?
ND: The reason it appealed to me was that I always wanted to do an action movie. Also, I wanted to play a character that was a little older. I play a young girl in her 20s who Kellan marries. I’m his wife! So that was pretty fun. I’m pregnant in it too, I get to have a baby belly.
SNMag: What’s your favorite thing to do on a Saturday night when you’re not working?
ND: Two things: Either go out for an amazing steak dinner and just indulge in yummy food and then just watch a movie and hang out, or I’ll go out with the girls and go to a cool, dive bar. I like intimate settings where you can really talk and hang out with your friends and cool people.
EXCLUSIVE: The Vampire Diaries stars tell all
Ask America’s hottest new TV stars Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder how their show The Vampire Diaries differs to others in its genre, and the handsome threesome will bite your head off.
“Different relationships, different tone and different structure,” Paul says, matter-of-factly. “There’s nothing even remotely relatable as far as the relationships and the story with any of the other shows.”
The story starts with gorgeous Nina as Elena Gilbert, a teen trying to cope after her parents are killed in a tragic accident. As she tries to pick up the pieces of her shattered life she is also supporting her troubled younger brother Jeremy, played by Steven McQueen. The action starts when, on Elena’s first day back at Mystic Falls High School, she meets a new student called Stefan Salvatore, played by Wesley.
The two have an instant connection but Elena has no idea what she is dealing with, while Stefan battles to control his urge for her blood. Things get more complicated when Stefan’s evil older brother, Damon, returns to Mystic Falls to cause mayhem, and win Elena’s heart as part of a game that turns bloody.
Unlike other vampire shows, the heroine, Elena, does not aspire to become immortal.
“I think it’s important for Elena to hold her ground,” Nina says. “You don’t see that many women characters portrayed in the media that are strong, confident, stand up for their friends and their family before their boyfriends. A lot of the characters portrayed on television are girls that are like, ‘I wanna have a boyfriend. I want to hang out at the mall and hang out with my friends.’
“It’s not about that for her. She cares about Stefan and he’s important to her. She has this connection with him but she will put her friends and her family, and the safety of her town before anything else. She’s not going to swoon over the fact that he’s a vampire and ask him to bite her right away and all that.”
Nina is no stranger to playing a love interest that wrecks havoc but in real life she is single. In her last show, Degrassi: The Next Generation, her boyfriend died because he was fighting over her. But “a lot more people die on this show because of me,” she says, laughing.
Ian puts the show’s success down to complicated onscreen relationships that intrigue and engage viewers, despite the clichéd storyline of mortal girl meets vampire and falls in love.
“True Blood is obviously the R-rated cable version of what we are,” Ian explains. “A 13-year-old girl can’t watch True Blood with her mom. There’s no sex in Twilight. Who wants to see that? So that’s how we’re different.”
If vampires did exist, Ian, Nina and Paul would befriend them after researching for their roles. Nina believes with no time limit on earth, vampires would seek constant fun while exploring the world and trying new things.
“They’re basically just people in different circumstances,” Nina explains. “They have these powers and advantages and disadvantages because they have extended life, but they have these cravings.”
Paul says his character isn’t having fun; instead he’s taking the “altruistic route”. “He’s like, ‘If I’m going to be evil inside, then I’m going to be all good outside’.”
The Vampire Diaries is based on the best-selling book series by L.J. Smith and filmed in Atlanta, Georgia. When the show debut in the United States it drew nearly five million viewers. It is now a worldwide hit and in its second season of filming.
The Vampire Diaries screens on Thursdays at 8.30pm on TV2.

Drama with a Bite
‘The Vampire Diaries’ was one of the most popular shows on TV in the States last year and it’s finally reached our shores.
The RTÉ Guide’s Janice Butler caught up with Nina and Paul at the Monte Carlo TV Festival to get all the juicy details from the show.
Janice Butler: Taking into consideration the name of the show, do you keep a diary yourself?
Nina Dobrev: No! I barely have time to sleep at night so I haven’t had a chance to keep a journal. I did write in a diary on and off and I wish that I continued to do it. It’s so funny looking back on them and at the time the smallest thing seemed so grave and important.
JB: Why do you think the vampire genre has become such a phenomenon?
ND: The vampire symbols a lot of different things. They used to be depicted as ugly and terrifying but now women are throwing themselves at them and want to be bitten! The vampire is like the outcast, the person that doesn’t fit in – everyone just wants to be loved and accepted.
JB: Do you think there’s an expiry date on it?
ND: I really hope there’s no expiry date for the sake of our show. But you know, the fact that Twilight was so successful it made the world aware that people wanted to see more about vampires. So thankfully for us, Twilight has given us the opportunity to make a TV show and I think we have a few more years at least.
JB: What is it like being stuck in the middle of two gorgeous boys on this show?
ND: Oh it’s horrible!! But thankfully I’m not stuck between Ian and Paul. These boys are my family now especially because we shoot in Georgia so we are away from our own families all the time. We’re very close and there are wonderful people – I couldn’t ask for a better cast.
JB: Before you got your big break on Vampire Diaries, I believe you were a model, did you enjoy that experience?
ND: I did a small bit of modelling, when I was younger I was a gymnast so I was very petite and tall and someone thought I could be a model. I tried it for a little while but realised I didn’t feel fulfilled just standing there and looking pretty, I wanted to express emotion and I felt like I had more to say. To those who do it, I think they’re great, but it’s not my cup of tea.
JB: You recently turned the big 21 this year, are you where you wanted to be at this milestone?
ND: I’m ahead of where I ever imagined I would be. Everyone has aspirations but I feel I was living the secret lifestyle without the branding of it, and I just didn’t think I would achieve it so quickly. I’m very lucky and I know that, I don’t take it for granted. I’m not one of those people that achieve success and go crazy, I’m very low key.
JB: There are so many comparisons made between Vampire Diaries and Twilight, does that ever get frustrating?
Paul Wesley: Well look, it’s incredibly similar, we both have a high-school setting, a mysterious guy that turns up and falls in love with a mortal girl. He’s got all these conflicts because of the nature of his situation and the fact that she is a vampire. So I understand that the premises of both stories are almost identical. Some people say I actually look like Rob Pat. I didn’t see Twilight prior to shooting Vampire Diaries but it would be ignorant and stupid to say that our show didn’t generate a buzz because of the success of Twilight but I think we have distinguished ourselves at this stage.
JB: Who’d win in a fight: Edward Cullen or Stefan?
PW: I don’t know enough about Edward Cullen, to be honest with you, so I don’t know what his abilities and powers are. That’s really up to the viewer or reader to decide. Once they start seeing the show, they can make their decision, but I have no idea. I can’t even answer that.
JB: Have you done a back-story for your character’s 100-year life?
PW: Yeah. First of all, I have the books as reference, which is nice, even though it’s not a verbatim thing, where we’re following the books, word for word. But, I have that as a great reference for back0story. Then, as an actor, I think everybody creates a little bit of a back-story, especially me. Stefan has so much history that I have too.
JB: While Damon is clearly the evil brother, is there a darker side to Stefan that we’ll get to see?
PW: I want to explore that. I think he indulged as a vampire for a little bit. And now, if things don’t go his way, and Damon gets his girl, and things are coming to an end, he may have to resort to violence and some malicious activity.
JB: Stefan is a very cool character, and a hit with the ladies, is this true to life?
PW: It’s actually funny that I’m playing this suave vampire because I’m probably the worst when it comes to women, I’m a stuttering fool. I’m always looking for some tips.
JB: Since the show has been such a success, would you have any ambitions to make a big screen version of it?
PW: I don’t know actually, no one’s ever asked me that. We would have to see if it could translate onto the big screen. I remember they did ‘The X Files’ movie and from what I can recall it didn’t work.

Steven R. McQueen talks to Hollywood News about upcoming “Vampire Diaries” season
Hollywoodnews.com: We had the opportunity to interview “The Vampire Diaries” star Steven R. McQueen this morning (August 12nd). He has a meaty role (pun intended) in the upcoming horror comedy, “Piranha 3D.”
McQueen comes from a royal Hollywood family. He’s the grandson of iconic actor Steve McQueen, and son of Chad McQueen. Of course, most people know him for his work on The CW’s hit television show. McQueen plays Jeremy Gilbert, the adoptive younger brother of Nina Dobrev’s character, Elena.
We’ll have much more on “Piranha” next week, ahead of the film’s Aug. 20 opening. But before we let McQueen go this morning, we had to ask him about the second season of “Vampire Diaries,” which is set to begin on Sept. 9.
“Obviously I can’t say whether he makes that change or not,” McQueen told me, referring to an unanswered question from the show’s first season about whether the previously human Jeremy turned into an undead vamp for season two.
“But I can say that Jeremy has been pushed around a lot. He lost the girl he loved. Both girls he loved, in fact. He lost his parents. And he has been betrayed by the one family member that he has left. Rather than kind of wearing his heart on his sleeve and allowing himself to get pushed around, he starts to push back and stand his ground. He also begins to become a little more cold and calculated.”
When asked if he enjoyed taking Jeremy down these darker avenues, McQueen told me, “Oh yeah. Jeremy has been one of the most favorite characters I’ve ever played, just because he has gone through so much, and he has been forced to make so many changes. You can only be hurt for so long before you turn hard. And that has been interesting to see his progression as the series has gone along.”
Expect to see a lot of McQueen in the coming week, with “Piranha” hitting theaters on Aug. 20, and “The Vampire Diaries” returning to the airwaves in September.

E! Online’s Kristin on John and Katherine in season 2
Frederick: Is there any chance David Anders will be back on The Vampire Diaries? I think he’s awesome.
I’m hearing his character isn’t dead, so fingers crossed! I’m guessing we’ll see him again. And chances are he won’t be Katherine’s biggest fan.
Georgina: Is Katherine really back for Stefan? I saw the preview at Comic-Con but I’m having a hard time believing it!
Yes, she really is back for Stefan (or Ste-fuh as Paul Wesley and I like to call him). I’m also told there are no plans for a love interest other than Katherine or Elena for Damon or Stefan for the beginning of the new season.

The 2010 VampireSite Awards: Pick The Best Actress!
Every year on KryptonSite, we have the annual KryptonSite Awards, honoring the best and worst of any given season of the show.
To give us something to do as we all anxiously await Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries, we’ve decided to do a much smaller scale VampireSite Awards – honoring the best and worst of Vampire Diaries Season 1.
We’ll do this year with only a few categories – Best Actor, Best Actress, Favorite Writer, Favorite Director, Best Episode, Worst Episode, Best Guest Star, and Best Cliffhanger. If the response is good, this could be the start of what may become an annual tradition here at VampireSite.
So, please, vote – and look for the results to be posted once all of the categories have been voted on.
We’ve already done Best Actor, so now it’s time to pick Best Actress, a category between all of the women who star in the series who are listed as series regulars (or were, in the case of Kayla Ewell). That’ll last through Saturday 8/7, where we’ll switch over to Favorite Writer.
As with the KryptonSite Awards, votes are limited to one vote per category per IP. Please spread the word about the Awards, though, so we can have the most possible participation!
Cast your vote at VampireSite.net.
‘Vampire Diaries’ Paul Wesley Teases: Katherine Is Capable of Pulling Stefan Away From Elena
With all the hooplah surrounding Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) feelings for Katherine (Nina Dobrev) on “Vampire Diaries”, it’s sometimes easy to forget that he wasn’t the only Salvatore brother to fall prey to her charms.
While Stefan (Paul Wesley) may claim to be madly in love with Elena, once upon a time he only had eyes for her…um, look-alike. So obviously, we couldn’t help but wonder how Katherine’s return would affect him. Our interest was really peaked though when we caught a season two preview clip at Comic-Con, in which Katherine tells Stefan she loves him, only to stab him right after (hey, love hurts right?).
“So, she tells me she loves me and then stabs me — what’s going on there?,” Paul said. That’s what we’d like to know!
Paul implied that Stefan won’t be able to entirely resist his former flame.
“Initially, he’s repulsed by it and then I think he was once in love with her to a certain extent — whether she manipulated him or not— but she’s super powerful and capable of pulling Stefan away from Elena a little bit and I think it will be interesting to explore that.”
Hm, a little Katherine-Stefan action could certainly be interesting and setup the “love square” (between Katherine/Stefan/Elana/Damon) that we’ve been hearing about these past few months. P.s. Can we just say that Nina is kinda the luckiest.girl.ever since she gets to play the love interest to both our “VD” hotties?
But if you think the return of Katherine will send Stefan into another downward spiral — think again. Our boy’s finally embracing this little thing called happiness.
“I think what I look forward to with Stefan is that he gets rid of his guilt, gets rid of the dark cloud that he has hanging over him with being a vampire,” said Paul. “I think he’s going to explore different parts of his personality that will make him happy at times and jovial and instinctive.”
A happy Stefan? Don’t mind if we do.

Paul Wesley Featured in CBS Watch Magazine 25th Anniversary Issue
Today I received the most recent issue of CBS Watch Magazine, and was thumbing through to see if there were any Vampire Diaries related articles. And to my surprise a found a few things. This is their 25th Anniversary issue, and one of the articles was “A Toast to 25 Issues”, where they celebrate some of their favorite photos from the past 5 years of Watch Magazine. Remember that article back in April that featured a photo of Paul Wesley taken at the famous Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant Cut? Here they give us some background info on how the site for the photoshoot was chosen. Click through to read all about it. I’ve also included a couple of other cool features. Paul is featured in a piece where they ask what would some of today’s stars look like with the infamous Tom Selleck “stache”. What do you guys think? haha And the next one, features Ian in this week’s Horoscope (He’s a Sagittarius).

'The Vampire Diaries' Michael Trevino on Tyler's rage, Uncle Mason, and nudity. Yes, nudity.
Where there are vampires, werewolves are rarely far behind, and "The Vampire Diaries" is no exception. When Zap2it got an exclusive sneak peek on location of Season 2 in Atlanta, I had the chance to take a little stroll around the Lockwood Mansion with Michael Trevino, the man behind Mystic Falls' newest lycanthrope.
Trevino's character, Tyler, is not only dealing with some animal insticts, but he's grieving the death of his dad (and the town "alpha-douche"), Mayor Lockwood. "It's just adding another layer to the top of his inner rage," Trevino explains. "He's upset and he's sad that his dad is gone, but then he's also upset because it's another move that his dad has made against him. His dad's dead and was never able to redeem himself for how he raised Tyler, how cruel and strict he was."
The mystery surrounding Mayor Lockwood's death isn't lost on the other residents of Mystic Falls... especially not on Damon (Ian Somerhalder). "They're questioning everything," Trevino says. "They're not assuming we're vampires, because I think the people that are asking the questions are actually vampires, so they know that we're not. A lot of questions are being asked right now."
Luckily, Tyler won't have to experience the Lockwood family curse alone. My first day on set was also "Trauma" star Taylor Kinney's first day playing Uncle Mason. Says Trevino, "He's my father's younger, hipper brother." (He's also hotter. No offense, Mayor Lockwood. Rest in peace.)
Even though Tyler and Matt (Zach Roerig) made up last season - yes, Matt forgave Tyler for making out with his mom - don't expect the BFF bromance to feature in the first few episodes of this season. "Tyler's going to be leaning more towards hanging out with Mason, now that he's in town," Trevino says. "I think the Lockwoods are just going to stick together in their own entity and let Matt go do his thing."
Taking such a central role in the show's plot is a new experience for Trevino, since Tyler was M.I.A. for the majority of episodes in Season 1. "I'm looking forward to our take on this werewolf lineage and culture,"he says. "You know, there's 'Twilight' and 'True Blood' and they have their differences, obviously. I just want us to be original and be our own kind of werewolf with the transformation and the look of our wolves."
I couldn't get much out of Trevino when it comes to the werewolf mythology, but he did give me some scoop on how the eternal battle between vampires and werewolves will play out in Mystic Falls. "There's a different set of rules within Mystic Falls," he says. "Werewolves have a little upper hand on vampires for a bit. There's something we're definitely capable of doing, that the vampires cannot protect themselves from. It's not your traditional werewolf rules as far as how they die."
At Comic-Con last week, Trevino told me that he's "nervous as hell" about the emphasis on his character this season. I'll say this much: he shouldn't be. While I can't give away much about the scenes I watched while I was on set, I can promise that you guys won't be disappointed in Trevino's performance.
Besides, even if Trevino's acting isn't up to par (which it is, don't worry) he's got Plan B ready to go. "I don't know how much clothing is going to be off or on," he teases, "but I'll say that I am prepared to get totally naked on the show if need be. It's official."
Team Tyler, get ready for some overcrowding in the clubhouse.

Joshua Jackson considers ‘Vampire Diaries’ role, practices his Salvatore brooding
This. Is. Amazing. “Fringe” star Joshua Jackson, who worked with “The Vampire Diaries” co-creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson on “Dawson’s Creek,” confirms to E! Online that he spoke with them at Comic-Con about coming on board for a possible “Diaries” guest role.
Pacey in Mystic Falls? Excuse me; my inner 13-year-old just died and went to teen drama heaven. (It’s a place filled with love triangles, angsty emo-pop, and long, pensive gazes across high school classrooms.)
Jackson might need some convincing before he agrees to the role. “It turns out that [Williamson] is not making a comedy with ‘The Vampire Diaries,’” he jokes. “I think it would be more sort of like ‘Inside Baseball’ comedy if I popped up, but who knows. Maybe we’ll take Pacey for a little light-hearted bloodsucking. We’re all family, here.”
I know. It’s almost too much awesomeness to handle right now. Are you feeling a little lightheaded? You’ll want to make sure you’re sitting down when you watch Jackson’s impression of Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley‘s brooding CW vampires. “They’re all too handsome,” Jackson says.
He also weighs in on the incredible response he’s received from fans of Pacey-Con. “I’ve spent years and years of my life trying to scrub that song out of my memory, and after walking around playing it on a boombox all day, I have been humming ‘I Don’t Want to Wait’ to myself, which is both creepy for me, having been on that show, and so addictive.”
'Vampire Diaries': A First Episode 'Game Changer' Brings Bonnie And Caroline To Forefront Of Season 2
If finding out Jeremy's fate (vampire or not?!) on "The Vampire Diaries" season premiere didn't sound exciting enough, just wait until you see the new twist executive producer Kevin Williamson teased to Hollywood Crush at Comic-Con two weeks ago. Apparently, there's going to be plenty of action — and all of the characters will be around to watch it take place.
"Something happens in the first episode that’s sort of a game changer," Kevin said. "Everyone here was sworn to secrecy because it involves everyone. It’s going to help launch us into the second season in a fresh way and it will be fun."
And, thankfully, the game-changing event will also include our favorite female sidekicks, Katerina Graham and Candice Accola. If you thought the fact that both Kat and Candice were conspicuously absent from the "VD" panel at Comic-Con was fishy, fear not: their absence from San Diego was due to work scheduling, not casting cuts (we think...nothing's for certain on "VD" after all). Kevin told MTV News at the time, “Well, someone [referring to Candice] had to work today — well, Friday and tomorrow — when everyone was traveling!”
Actually, Kevin said he's excited to give the show's sideline characters a lot more camera time in season 2. "What’s nice about this is that Matt, Caroline, Tyler, and Bonnie were all sort of our secondary characters — they are not part of the triangle. Now, all the storylines I wanted to tell last year and didn’t have time, I can tell them. I’m grateful I can tell the stories I’ve been sitting on. It will involve Caroline and Bonnie and Matt and Tyler, and a new triangle will be born."
A new triangle, eh?
While Kevin didn't elaborate too much, he did confirm that the show is casting both the new character Vanessa (whom Damon and Alaric will meet while researching vampire mythology at Duke University), and another young lady. "At the moment, we’re also casting a love interest for a girl in between a friendship." Our theory: that girl will get in between Matt (Zach Roerig) and Tyler (Michael Trevino).
As far as specific plot information involving the supporting cast, Kevin shared an interesting tidbit about that little witch, Bonnie regarding that promise she made in the season 1 finale — to go after Damon if he kills another innocent person. "Bonnie had a wonderful season, and she’s going to hold true to her promise," Kevin said. "I think she says it in the first episode [of season 2]: she meant what she said, and she meant business. So she takes a point of view, and she doesn’t let up on it."
What do you think about the news that Matt, Caroline, Tyler, and Bonnie will all have more screen time? What do you think about the new love triangle?

How will the vamps and weres interact on The Vampire Diaries? — Tamara
MICKEY: “In our world, our vampires know very little about the werewolf mythology, other than what anybody who’s watched Wolfman or read books has learned,” says executive producer Julie Plec. “They’re going to be surprised at what they can do.” Well, not everyone will be surprised. Katherine, it turns out, has a long history with the werewolves of Mystic Falls.

Bite On This interviews Chris Mollere & release date for The Vampire Diaries soundtrack
Chris Mollere, the Vampire Diaries music supervisor, was recently interviewed by Bite On This. You can listen to his interview here. It is really great, so do not miss it!
Vampire-Diaries.net were lucky enough to talk to him as well! Here are a few tidbits he mentioned in both interviews thanks to them:
- The official Vampire Diaries soundtrack will be released October 12th on EMI/Virgin. The soundtrack will feature selections from Season 1 and Season 2.
- He couldn’t say too much about the final tracklisting, but the special TVD Mix of “Bloodstream” by Stateless – unique to the show – will be on the soundtrack.
- He couldn’t drop any hints about artists featured in the Season 2 premiere because he’s pulling together the music for it now. “We’ve got a lot of stuff to answer. I don’t know if it’s going to be the most song-driven episode we’ve had.”
'Vampire Diaries' Casting News: 'Dexter' Alum Joins Season 2 Sparking Romance Speculation
"Dexter" alum Courtney Ford (who, by the way, is married to "Superman Returns" and "Scott Pilgrim" actor Brandon Routh) has signed on as Vanessa, a graduate student from Duke University, who will help Alaric, Elena and Damon dig through Isobel's old research, EW has confirmed.
Now, we're very excited because this casting gives us tons to speculate about. The biggest of course, is whether or not there's some love interest potential with Vanessa. After all, Mystic Fall has quite a few eligible bachelors and not enough single ladies.
While the details have been scant, Executive Producer Kevin Williamson did drop some hints at Comic-Con.
"We do know in the third episode Alaric (Matt Davis) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) travel to Duke University to look at paranormal research and there is a grad student there who helps them dig into it and you know...she's not without her own intrigue," Kevin told Ausiello late last month.
We wouldn't be surprised if both Damon and Alaric were "intrigued," but we think Alaric has a better shot here. Sure, Damon's a ladies man and all, but we're guessing he's going to have his hands full with the whole Katherine coming back and breaking his heart thing (not to mention Elena) to take on yet another lady.
On the other-hand, Alaric could really use some lovin' and a distinct storyline of his own.
Of course, that's not the only thing that caught our attention with this new announcement. In fact, we found it very interesting that Stefan (Paul Wesley) isn't going on this research trip, leaving us to wonder where or what he'll be doing. Ideas anyone?
Of course, all this speculation could be for nothing. After all, we have no idea how long Vanessa's going to be sticking around Mystic Falls. Kevin himself said they might decide to "gut her like a fish" (eek!). Although in this case, we're not going to take the bait.
What do you think of this new casting? Should she be paired with Damon or Alaric?
- YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST
Someone on Vampire Diaries is gay
The Vampire Diaries producer Kevin Williamson wants to have a gay character on his show. It probably won’t be Jeremy, Bonnie, Caroline, Matt or Jenna. And it couldn’t be Stefan, Elena or Damon, even though that would be a really big twist, because it would kind of end that whole love triangle thing.
So Williamson thinks he’ll have to bring in a new character to make a gay storyline work.
“It’s one of those things that needs to feel organic and seamless,” Williamson told a group of reporters on July 28 in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was at The CW’s party for the Television Critics Association press tour. “I don’t want it to be a character that comes in and is a one-off. I want someone to come in and have a reason and a purpose and really push that story forward the way I want to do it, and they’re so important to the story that without them the show won’t happen. That’s what I want.”
Gay teens are an important issue to Williamson outside of show business. He supports GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. “I’m sitting in the wings waiting,” he said. “I’m waiting. Which character can be gay? Which character won’t? Where will it fit in? How can I get the gay character in? I don’t want to sound like I’m a militant about it, like THERE MUST BE A GAY CHARACTER, even though I am. It’s not just that, it’s also diversity. I always feel like I don’t have enough diversity on my show, and that is one of the things I’m very conscientious of, and not just gay characters. Any diversity. In anything, I want everyone represented. I want everybody on the show.”
He’s used TV to support gay issues before. On Williamson’s last teen drama, Dawson’s Creek, Jack (Kerr Smith) came out in the second season. That also makes it tougher for Vampire Diaries, because he doesn’t want to repeat himself. “I don’t want to do a coming-out story. I did it on Dawson’s Creek. As much as I’d like to do [a gay story], I want it to be fresh, and I’d want to do it in a new way. I don’t know what that way is. We’ve seen it. We’ve seen it on countless shows. I’ve done my coming-out story, and I was very proud of it, and I don’t know what it would be.”
It’s not going to be the werewolf either. That would be so obvious. Tyler Lockwood is going to wolf out this year, but don’t read any more into that. “I kept joking with Michael Trevino, going, ‘Well, the werewolf’s going to come out. He’s going to come out of the closet.’ And Michael Trevino said, ‘Really? That’s a tired allegory, I just want to point out.’ And he’s right. It is. So I go, ‘No, we’re not doing that.’ The werewolf story is an allegory on its own for any coming-out story. It’s a universal coming-out story.”
Williamson also won’t force a character to be gay when they need to be something else for the show. He’s writing a few guest-star parts now that won’t work as gay characters. “There’s plenty of characters coming, but the couple of regular characters that we’re bringing in are female, so I guess they could be lesbians, but we’re bringing them in for love interests. Once the wheels are in motion, it’s hard just to add something simply because you want to do it.”
But he really wants to—and not just Williamson. All of the Vampire Diaries want to have a gay character. “You do know my writing staff is just a mixture of gay or gay-friendly. We all just sit around and talk about Glee and ‘Why don’t we have a gay character?’ All we do is talk about it, and we’re trying to figure it out. And I’ve done it. I want to do something new. Teenagers is my big deal, GLSEN. They’re my passion. It’s something I’m passionate about. I’ve just got to figure out how to do it. How do I do it and be original? I want it to be a good story. As soon as we can, we will. Also, I think when we bring in more characters, if it fits the story, we’ll do it.”
The Vampire Diaries returns Sept. 9 on The CW.
The Vampire Diaries season 2 extended preview
Ohio native stars in ‘Vampire Diaries’ and other shows
Before Zach Roerig dedicated himself to bringing characters to life on television, he spent quite a bit of time among the dead.
“I spent a lot of my summers in cemeteries, which sounds kind of messed up but really it’s not, because cemeteries are some of the most beautiful places,” he said.
At least the native of Montpelier, Ohio, about 55 miles west of Toledo, had a good reason: making cemetery memorials is the family business. It just happens to be a coincidence that his current role is starring among the undead on the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, which began shooting its second season last week.
Roerig, who also has appeared on the soap operas As the World Turns and One Life to Live, comes from a village of about 4,000 and grew up baling hay for the horses on his grandfather’s 100-acre farm. It all adds up to a unique resume.
“It was amazing,” Roerig, 25, said of his youth, speaking by phone from his grandfather’s farm last month. “That’s the kind of stuff I was doing before I went to New York.”
That move, which came just three days after graduating from a high school where he was on the wrestling, football, and track teams, was a huge leap but it wasn’t a complete surprise.
His father had been active in local theater and a number of family members were musicians. One day when Roerig heard an ad on the radio for acting and modeling classes, he thought, “Maybe this is the outlet that I’ve been missing to really let my talents out.”
For two years during high school he traveled to Cleveland every weekend for lessons. After receiving a strong response at an International Modeling and Talent Association convention, he decided it was worth it to pursue acting as a career, even if it meant a difficult transition from his small-town life.
“I used to call my folks bawling all the time,” Roerig said. “New York’s a big city but when you first move there it can be a real lonely place,” he said.
When his friends were home having fun around a bonfire, he was alone in the Big Apple as trash accumulated everywhere during a garbage strike. Andrea Roerig, the actor’s mother and president of Fackler Monument Company, said she and her late husband, Dan, were his biggest supporters.
“My famous words were: ‘How bad do you want it?’” she said.
Apparently, pretty bad. Before long her son was appearing in an episode of Law & Order that was filmed in Times Square.
“It was just surreal,” Roerig said. “I remember yelling ‘Ohio!’ to people on the red tour buses going by. I was so proud.”
The soap opera stints followed, first on As the World Turns for two years as Casey Hughes and then a number of episodes on One Life to Live. Later he showed up on the critically acclaimed drama Friday Night Lights, where he was cast as a rodeo star who was the bad-boy beau of the character played by Toledo-native Adrianne Palicki.
“That whole experience in general was great,” Roerig said of the work on Friday Night Lights. “It was probably one of my favorite acting jobs in my career thus far just because it was … so close to home. I was able to wear my own cowboy boots for some of it, things like that.
Most recently, he’s been hanging out with a more bloodthirsty crowd. Last year The Vampire Diaries made its debut on the CW as a drama based on the books by L.J. Smith. Roerig plays Matt Donovan, an all-American guy who happens to be the ex-boyfriend of a girl caught between two vampire brothers.
Aside from the subject matter, being a part of the show filmed in Atlanta represents something new for the Ohio native.
“This is different … because it started out as a pilot. This is the first I’ve ever been a part of a project from the beginning,” he said. “We’re all very young. In this sense, we’re all like brothers and sisters.”
The unmarried actor hasn’t forgotten his real family, though, which includes his younger sister Emily, a student at Bowling Green State University. Just last month Roerig could be found driving a motorhome with some cousins to Minnesota for a family reunion.
“He was always very good about coming home,” his mother said. “He is just a really good, generous, big-hearted person. … I hope that part of him never changes.”
‘Vampire Diaries’ Season 2: Elena Will Discover Why She Looks Like Katherine!
If there’s one thing we can’t get enough off, it’s season two “Vampire Diaries” scoops. In the last week alone, we’ve given you an exclusive sneak peek into Damon’s reaction when he finds out it’s not Elena he kissed, the dish on the werewolves that will descend upon the town and of course the confirmation that we were all waiting for — Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Katherine will meet.
The last one was a pretty big deal, especially because of the shroud of mystery surrounding the relationship between the two girls. After all, they do look exactly alike and we’ve all wondered why. So, when we chatted with show exec producer Kevin Williamson at Comic-Con, we decided to work our Hollywood Crush magic and get him to give us the goods on whether or not the truth would be revealed in season 2.
“We 100 percent go there,” Kevin said of revealing why Katherine and Elena look so much alike. “It’s not an easy answer, it’s something I think Elena’s going to have to uncover, and I think the answers aren’t exactly what she wants to hear. But 100 percent, she is going to figure out the doppelganger aspect.”
The “Vampire” mastermind elaborated that Elena would take the lead on figuring out why she’s got a look-alike running around town.
“We’re going to play with the doppelganger and why does she look exactly like Katherine from 1864. And Elena takes that journey to uncover the truth because she wants to find out. Wouldn’t you want to know? I mean, it’s creepy,” he added. Yes, Kevin, we would want to know.
Of course, with Katherine more heavily in the mix in season 2, there are bound to be lots of flashbacks.
“You know, we talked about the founder’s ball, back in 1864 but we never showed it [in season 1]. We have an opportunity to show it, and show what happened when Katherine was there. What’s she doing? Oh look and there’s Mr. Lockwood in the corner, what’s he up to? So there’s a way we can sort of connect everything and show you part B. The other half of the story that hasn’t been told yet,” Kevin said, adding that flashbacks in the first 13 episodes will stick to Mystic Falls circa the 1860s.
We’ve got to admit, with all this new information our heads are starting to spin. We’ve already come up with all kinds of theories as to why Elena and Katherine look alike. Of course, then again, we could save ourselves the headache and just go with the one Steven R. McQueen proposed:
“She’s actually a clone,” he joked. OK, so maybe he was just kidding, but at this point, we’ll take it!
