‘Vampire Diaries’ Star Ian Somerhalder Says Katherine Is ‘The Damon Of Last Year’

“Oh I don’t see that happening anytime soon,” Ian said of Katherine’s possible (eventual?) demise. “She’s wreaking havoc, man. She’s the cornerstone for that havoc. She’s the Damon of last year, so I don’t see her going anywhere. She’s a major catalyst for a lot,” he explained.

“She’s out of her mind,” Ian said. “And you know what, she’s doing whatever she’s doing out of whatever reason. I don’t even know. It could be for love, it could be for survival, it could be vengeance. I actually don’t know. When we do find that out, I’m very much look forward to that.”

TV Fanatic chats to Ian Somerhalder and Candice Accola: “Katherine and Caroline’s paths will continue to cross.”

What has changed for Damon?

I think that what’s sort of thrown Damon for a loop is what he said at the end of the finale, “I came to this town wanting to destroy it and everything in it, and now I find myself wanted to protect it.” How the hell does that happen? I think that it happens because when you forge relationships with people you raise stakes, you have something to lose. For someone who’s never had anything to lose, it’s throwing him a bit. It’s fun to play, but I think there are a lot of things that are about to pop up that are going to make for some action.

Read the entire Ian Somerhalder interview at TV Fanatic.

Do you think Caroline took it easy on Damon, considering everything he put her through?
Definitely. At the same time, Caroline is very new to this whole world of being a vampire and what she’s capable of and what she’s not capable of. In order to become a vampire, part of you dies. It’s a very traumatizing thing. That fact that Damon has already tried to kill her again… she doesn’t know how powerful he is. In her mind, what if he’s as powerful as Katherine? I think there’s only so much playing with fire you want to do when you’re already half dead. It’d be a little scary to push his buttons too much until she knows what she’s capable of, and more importantly, what he is capable of.

Ian Somerhalder Talks to TV Fanatic

Damon has grown from being such a sweet person, as we see in flashbacks, to someone so full of anger.

I think what’s sad about Damon is that he’s such a tortured character. In life, we use humor as a band aid; it’s a medicine for pain, which is why comedians are the most miserable people you’ve ever met. These two brothers have dealt with a pretty substantial amount of pain in their lives, like anybody, except it’s drawn out over a century and a half. I think now, Damon feels, if anything, just stupid. You know when you do something you know is your fault and you’ve suffered from it? You just want to slap yourself.

There are petitions online that want you to be nominated for an Emmy.

Yeah, that’s not gonna happen. Damon being [Entertainment Weekly's] Sexiest Beast and me being nominated for an Emmy are two very different things. If I had that mind compulsion thing that Damon had I could probably go to the Academy and just brainwash them all.

If Stefan and Elena’s relationship is so great, why do you think there are so many Delena fans out there?

I don’t know. I think the only difference is, Stefan’s a much more sound individual. I just think the only reason is, Stefan’s got so much to deal with… with his brother, protecting his girlfriend, all of this shit, that Damon just has a lot more fun, and I think Stefan is just so concerned with protecting or making everything right, that Elena ends up having more fun with Damon.

MTV News chat with Ian Somerhalder: “This softer side of Damon is really difficult for me to find.”

“It’s really, really cool,” he told MTV News about his participation in the summit. “I think there’s a lot of anger and frustration and fear and determination in this exact moment in our country in the wake of this huge oil spill. But the government, they know enough to figure it out and they’re taking steps to do that, so I’m really honored to be invited to go and speak with these people. I’ll try not to screw up,” he joked. “I can’t wait to put my thinking cap on and get to Washington and have really structured and really inspiring conversations with people and hopefully something comes out of it.”

“The dynamics in which this guy lives by are so skewed,” Somerhalder told MTV News recently. “But at the end of the day, and it sounds so cliché, but at the end of the day, he does everything — like all of us do — for love. In some fashion or another, that is why he does what he does. He may go about it in very unconventional, unorthodox, unethical ways, but he does them nonetheless, and he believes in what he’s doing and he has a blast at what he’s doing.”

Part 2 & 3 of Hollywood Crush’s Ian interview: Thoughts on Vampire Diaries musical episode, more on Damon and Elena’s relationship

So what would be Damon’s go-to musical number?

“I don’t know… Damon would be more like the barber of Fleet Street [a la "Sweeney Todd"]. He would be the guy who sings as he cuts people’s arms off,” he said matter-of-factly—which made us laugh out loud. “Full, Johnny Depp style.”

“Look, here’s the thing, I don’t know how he’s going to get back into her good graces. He killed her brother, there is no better way to tell someone you love them then to snap their brother’s neck. Most people do flowers,” Ian told MTV News recently. “I’ve heard [fans want] that and even in talking to Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec]… How? That’s the question: How in the hell is he going to get back in her good graces? How is she ever going to trust him again? How is she ever even going to want to look at him again?”

More Vampire Diaries spoilers: Will Caroline go evil, what’s next for Damon and Elena & Jimmy Jean-Louis to guest star

Margo: I am loving TVD! Will Caroline go fully evil?

How awesome-sauce was that twist? I’m hearing that despite Katherine’s evil plan: No, Caroline won’t go fully evil and also you should not give up hope yet on her and Matt. Hey, Katie-poo, stick that in your hot pants and smoke it! – E! Online

Question: Please tell me that not all is lost for Elena and Damon on The Vampire Diaries. It killed me when she said he’s lost her forever. Does she ever forgive him? — Lesleigh

Matt Roush: Answering this directly would qualify as a spoiler, and I won’t go there. But realistically speaking, Vampire Diaries is burning through a ton of story each week, which of course is great fun, and when declarations like this are made, I tend to silently add on a little phrase I got from the musical Avenue Q: “For now.” The chemistry between Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder (whether they’re Elena and Damon or Katherine and Damon) is palpable, and there’s a long way to go for all of these characters before “forever” kicks in. I don’t know if she’ll ever truly forgive him, but hope (like vampires) springs eternal, and I’m betting Elena and Damon have many chances to make up, if not kiss, in the weeks and months ahead. – TV Guide

Help! I can’t tell if the werewolves are the good guys or the bad guys on The Vampire Diaries. — Cory
MICKEY:
I can’t either, but perhaps a new addition to the cast will clarify everyone else’s relative goodness. He’s a man of few words who allows his piercing eyes to do the talking for him. I’m hearing him compared to the Haitian on Heroes, which means those peepers are probably good for more than just lookin’. – TV Guide

A Vampire Diaries Musical Episode? Ian Somerhalder is Game!

MTV’s Hollywood Crush caught up with Ian Somerhalder and discussed the possibility of a musical episode. Check it!

For today’s installment, we bring you Ian’s thoughts on his new “Sexy Beast” status, hazing from his co-stars and the answer to an excellent reader-submitted question: Would he consider doing a musical episode?

“I would do a musical episode in a heartbeat!” Ian exclaimed, then revealed that one of his fellow cast members has a hidden talent that would be perfect for a musical. “Zach Roerig [aka Matt] is a tap dancer,” he said. “Who would’ve thought?”

Vampire Diaries Spoilers & Casting News Via Ausiello

Candice Accola Talks Caroline and Her Band Straight To Video

Vlada Gelman of LA Times Showtracker recently caught up with Candice Accola to discuss her recent challenging storyline, how Caroline’s relationships will be affected and her band Straight To Video.

How is Caroline’s transformation going to affect her friendship with Bonnie [Katerina Graham]?

I would assume greatly. … Sometimes there are friendships where there needs to be some space apart. I think that that’s kind of a point for Bonnie and Caroline. They both need to figure out how they feel about that situation. Also, looking back on the first season, Caroline wasn’t necessarily so supportive when Bonnie was finding out about her own changes and her own supernatural qualities. … It’s a lot for Caroline to expect Bonnie to have that immediate just being OK with everything because Caroline didn’t give her that support.

Is the fact that Caroline is now a vampire finally going to clue in her mother [Marguerite MacIntyre] to what’s going on right underneath her nose?

It definitely has to at a certain point. Her changing and turning affect every single relationship in her life, especially with her mother. … Her mother’s always tried to be supportive in times when Caroline didn’t want her support. This is a time when she’s going to need it. It’ll be interesting to see if her mom steps up to the plate.

I read that you started an ’80s cover band with some of the crew members called Straight to Video. What songs do you guys sing?

We haven’t had a reunion yet, but we were playing with the wrap party. Oh man, we did like a good, solid set of like 10 songs. Then we did “Walk Like an Egyptian,” “Just What I Needed,” “We’re Not Going to Take It.” It wasn’t specifically ’80s. We did a little bit of “Where Is My Mind” and “I Want You to Want Me.” It was really, really fun. We did “Breed” by Nirvana, which was really sweet to do.

I think [executive producers] Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec might have to do a talent-show episode so we can get the cast singing.

Yeah. Everyone’s got their little niche. It’d be really fun. … [But] I find it nice to keep it separate as well. It’s always weird when you see a movie and there’s no reason for someone to, like, jump on stage and be a singer, and then they just do that. … But if it came organically, I would grab that mike and jump on stage for sure.

Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: 2.3 Bad Moon Rising

Bad Moon Rising marks the big unveiling of the new creature on Mystic Falls supernatural block, and three episodes into Season 2, already one thing is clear: if you turned up to the TVD plot party with particular expectations, prepare to check them at the door by the time the opening credits have rolled.

That being the case, thank goodness we kicked this one off by welcoming back the much beloved and arguably hottest history teacher in the history of education.

MOMENT #1: WELCOME BACK, HOTTER

Damon calls Alaric over (who arrives complete with a new coif that, if we’re honest, belongs in a Head and Shoulders ad) in order to shed some light on the Lockwoods – not through his own knowledge of Mystic Falls, but through Isobel’s research at Duke. The research includes information Isobel had collated not only about vampires but – much to the surprise of everyone present – werewolves. Elena is very curious about this, not in the least because she knows the research her birth mother has undertaken will more than likely yield results about her lineage, and how that fits in with Katherine. Damon however, remains skeptical, but he knows that Isobel’s research holds more than one answer that he’s searching for.

Meanwhile, Mason Lockwood is heading out for an apparent run, not realising that his nephew is following him to what we eventually see is a very, very old underground cellar. Tyler waits for his chance, and ventures underground to explore the cellar. Inside he is visibly troubled by what he finds: chains and harnesses hang off the stone, and a claw mark has been gashed into the wall.

Elsewhere, Matt visits Caroline. While he stands at the door knocking, she stands separated from the door by a big shaft of sunlight. She tests it, and again she begins to burn. Unable to answer without revealing her new condition, so she hides in the house, pretending she’s not there when he then calls her phone and leaves a message asking her to go to Tyler’s party at the waterhole.

As she’s packing to leave, Elena & Stefan discuss her road trip to Duke with Alaric and Damon. Stefan hates the fact that she has to, but he tells her to go – he will stay and take care of Caroline.

Down in the hall, Alaric and Jenna speak. He tries to apologise for not being around more since their kiss, but she tells him she doesn’t want an apology. He just needs to go deal with his past and Isobel – to do what he needs to do.

Now back at the mansion, Tyler asks his mother about ruins. Carol says that they were an part of the original Lockwood plantation house until it burned down. When he queries the existence of the cellar – she says nobody speaks about it, because it still reminds people about slave days of the American south. Mason walks in on their conversation. He doesn’t quite hide the put out look on his face when he learns Tyler has been asking bout the area surrounding the cellar her he has been secretly using.

Ian Somerhalder Inteviews with PopWrap and MTV

Here are a couple of in depth interviews with Ian Somerhalder, first from PopWrap and then with MTV. Lots of goodies in both, so be sure and head on over to each site to read the rest!

Via PopWrap:

PW: Last week we watched Caroline get turned — what was your reaction to that plot twist?
Ian: We lost Vicki last year and losing Kayla [Ewell] was brutal. Anyone who turns into a vampire ends up dying – quickly. So it gave us pause because Candice [Accola] is such a phenomenally talented actress and Caroline is such a great, witty, smart character that losing her was the last thing we wanted. But now she’s a hot, witty strong vampire. Plus, I’ve been playing this vampire for 18 months, Damon’s been one for over 100 years, so I forget that there are subtleties to playing a vampire that I’ve known for a while. It’s cool to watch someone start to figure it out.

PW: Does Damon come around on his desire to kill her?
Ian: He wants her dead. That’s what makes sense to him – but Caroline starts to prove herself to Damon. The reality is, there are some major problems with a couple of the elements coming to town and Damon & Stefan are going to need all the help they can get. They’ll be forced to put some of their differences aside to protect what they love.

PW: Which is?
Ian: Which is Mystic Falls and Elena. The reality is, they’ve had every opportunity kill one another 100 times over. And now that Katherine’s back, she could take either one of them out with one arm tied behind her back and one eye closed. And they know that. And that’s a big problem. Then you’ve got Mason Lockwood coming into play – the brothers are facing some big problems. They’re Bear Stearns a couple years ago.

Via MTV:

“The dynamics in which this guy lives by are so skewed,” Somerhalder told MTV News recently. “But at the end of the day, and it sounds so cliché, but at the end of the day, he does everything — like all of us do — for love. Somerhalder said one thing that has tripped him up a bit this season is playing out the changes in Damon’s sensitivity. “There’s been this turn, and it’s tough,” Somerhalder said. “It’s not easy to play. This softer side of Damon is really difficult for me to find. It’s very counterintuitive.”

The Washing Post and PopWrap interview Ian Somerhalder

The Washing Post chatted with Ian at their Energy Panel. Check out the article below and head over to their site in order to watch the video. Thanks to Vampire Diaries Online for the heads up!

I spent a few minutes with Somerhalder this morning, discussing how he has galvanized his many  Twitter followers, whether he would ever consider seeking political office, his status as America’s sexiest beast (according to Entertainment Weekly readers) and — in honor of yesterday’s sixth anniversary of the crash of Oceanic 815 — how he felt about the “Lost” finale.

The actor also talked to PopWrap about Damon’s relationships with his brother, Elena, Katherine and more, Vampire Diaries, etc. An excerpt can be found below. Read the entire interview at New York Post.

PW: What would you say is your favorite upcoming episode?
Ian: The flashback episode is big – a lot of flashbacks. The cool thing was, even for me as an audience member, a lot is revealed. Exactly what happened in that tomb. And Katherine is the one that explains it and you see it visually in the 1860’s. It’s confusing, powerful and cool. It’s compelling, dynamic and full of s*** we’ve always wanted to know. Which is always fun to see.

Ian Somerhalder talks to Fancast, LA Times interview with Candice

What happens in this week’s episode?

They realize in this episode very quickly that this whole wolf thing is a major problem.  It’s great for the producers of the show because bringing in a really powerful supernatural element  that can kill vampires, we better show up to work on time.  I’ve been a vampire for the past 18 months and Damon’s been a vampire for 150 years. There are a lot of things that I just instinctively know.  To watch [Caroline] figuring out all these quirks and abilities that you gain by virtue of being a vampire is quite interesting. Damon tried to kill Caroline (Candice Accola) because he knew it was the right thing to do.  He needs to mend his issues with Elena.  I don’t know how that’s going to happen.  He killed her brother. What better way to say I love you than to kill someone’s sibling?

The rest of the interview – at Fancast.

Ian on his character’s issues: “He [Damon] was duped by blind love.”

Do you see Damon turning his attention anywhere other than towards Elena this season?
IS:
I think right now, he’s got his hands full. Caroline is running around as a vampire. There are a lot of issues with Mason. And there’s Katherine. He’s got a full plate. I mean, the love of his life totally screwed him over because of his naivete. The girl who looks identical to her, who’s so sweet, he just totally f-cked over and he’s pretty much lost that relationship. And now he’s got this guy in town who is a werewolf who can basically kill him. These are major, major problems. I think it’s going to be fun watching him deal with all these things.

Ian Somerhalder dishes about Bad Moon Rising with Hollywood Crush

“The question of, ‘How does Elena feel right now?’ Can she even look at [Damon]? She’s going to have to deal with him, because he’s around. There are a lot of issues to deal with,” he explained. “[Damon] wants to kill her best friend, Caroline, one of her best friends, and there’s this problematic supernatural element that’s running around the town, and it literally poses a serious threat to all of them—every single one of them: Katherine, Damon, Elena, Stefan, Caroline, everyone,” Ian said. “So dealing with that and getting into that is necessary, and that’s what this episode is going to start to touch upon.”

Liam in Smithtown, N.Y.: What’s coming up for Bonnie on The Vampire Diaries? Will she continue to feel guilty after forcing Damon to give Caroline his blood?
Definitely…but only to a point. Katerina Graham recently told us: “This is somebody who you love and you’re putting pressure on other people to help you out to protect someone else. There’s guilt with the whole process.” However, Mystic Falls’ resident witch still feels the vampires are ultimately to blame…for everything that’s ever happened in the entire world. Or something like that. “It’s still their fault that this happened in the first place. At the end of the day, if the vampires didn’t come to town, this wouldn’t be a problem.” We think Damon said it best: “Witches, judgy little things.” – Watch With Kristin

Keck’s Exclusives: Who’s Moving Into Mystic Falls?

By the end of the season, HBO’s True Blood left Bon Temps infested with vampires, werewolves, werepanthers, shape shifters, shamans, fairies and witches. I asked the cast of The Vampire Diaries, which is bringing werewolves to Mystic Falls, what other creatures they’d like to see terrorize their town.

Ian Somerhalder (Damon): “Morena Baccarin’s lizard alien from V. If a lizard that hot showed up, Damon would definitely have to have a bite.”

Nina Dobrev (Elena): “A dragon from Harry Potter. The fire they breathe out could kill our vampires.”

Paul Wesley (Stefan): “Steven McQueen could turn into a unicorn overnight.”

Ratings and song list for last night’s Brave New World

Unfortunately, Vampire Diaries ratings went low again. The Brave New World ones are down 13% from season 2 premiere The Return. Here’s what TV by the Numbers had to say:

The second week of the CW’s Vampire Diaries and Nikita saw declines among adults 18-49 for both.Vampire Diaries 1.4 adults 18-49 rating was down 13% from its premiere, and Nikita’s 1.2 adults 18-49 rating was down 14%.  I will include the women 18-34 ratings that the CW targets ASAP.

Now something much nicer – music featured on the previous episode! As usual, courtesy of the lovely @cmollere.

Starry Mag talks to Taylor Kinney: “It’s [Vampire Diaries] the best thing on TV right now!”

Q) What has been the most challenging part of playing Mason?

A) It’s just coming on board and getting acclimated. I’d say that’s the biggest challenge in any endeavor, being the new kid. The relationships that Mason has with the people in the town are all new, for the most part. Even if I know who people are or they know who I am, I’ve been out of town so long that those relationships don’t just kick right off. That’s the toughest part, just integrating yourself into a new area, place of work, town, school or whatever it is. It’s trying to be a part of that and get whatever you want out of it. I think people can empathize with that. It happens in life all the time.

Memory Lane episode stills

Just like we thought, after the first look at the premiere flashback episode this season, more stills appeared. Most of them feature Katherine with both Stefan and Damon. Unfortunately, there’s no a flashback one but we really hope more to come. Oh, and what is it that Katherine’s holding? Emily’s spell book? Or Stefan’s diary, maybe? Also, we’ll let you guess who Mr. Salvatore hugs in the last still. These raise many questions, don’t they?

AOL’s TV Squad chats with Kat Graham about a love interest for Bonnie and more

Are there going to be any surprise guests this season?

We have a really great guest star who comes on in the first few episodes, a really cute guy the girls will love. There’s always some really great characters being introduced and fun new actors who join our little family. [It's] always fun to have them be a part of our lives for a little bit.

Exclusive still from Memory Lane (204)

Here we have Katherine (see the black clothes!) and Damon sharing a late night encounter in an unidentified location. This certainly isn’t the Salvatore manor, and it doesn’t look like the Gilbert residence either, right? If you ask us, it looks like some location in Mystic Falls proper (what with the stone walkways), or perhaps it’s in a completely different town all together! These vamps do like their road trips. From Damon’s expression and body language, it appears that he’s unexpectedly come upon Katherine. Perhaps she was waiting for him? Is she stalking Damon? Does she want to use Damon against Stefan/Elena? Or is Damon still too upset from last week’s rebuff to be a part of any of her plans?

Kat Graham Discusses Bonnie’s Relationships With TV Guide

Here’s another great interview with Kat Graham, this time with TV Guide. She discusses where all her relationships stand, specifically her relationship with Caroline after the most recent turn of events, and what we can expect from Bonnie in tonight’s episode, “Brave New World”.

TVGuide.com: Will Bonnie and Elena ever be as close as they once were?

Graham: I don’t think the relationship with Bonnie and Elena will ever go back to the way it was. I think they can be friends and they can still be close, [but] it’s different. We all have those friends we have serious problems with, but you know they would die for you.

TVGuide.com: Do you see the vampires and witches ever aligning?

Graham: For the benefit of a life, yeah. Just for the benefit of the vampires? No, I don’t think Bonnie would do that.

VGuide.com: What about Bonnie and Stefan or Damon?

Graham: I don’t know if it’s never going to happen, but I don’t know about a friendship. They’re going to have to work their asses off to get Bonnie to even like them. I think if it helped Elena, she would definitely work with them and I think that says a lot about Bonnie.

TVGuide.com: How does Bonnie take her anger out on Damon in the second episode?

Graham: She keeps her promise, I will say that, and she will do something unthinkable.

TVGuide.com: How will the dynamic between Bonnie and Caroline [Candice Accola] change after what happened during the premiere’s final scene?

Graham: Caroline’s always been the chatty, blonde, silly frenemy, and now that that’s changed. It’s left them all in a vulnerable place, especially Caroline. Bonnie wouldn’t ever just cut anyone off for no reason. If they were really not going to be friends anymore, it would have to be because of something Caroline did. No matter what Caroline is, it would have to be something awful. Other than that, Bonnie is pretty accepting of the fact that her friends are a little different. I think Elena choosing a vampire is just as strange as Bonnie being a witch, personally.

Kat Graham Talks Bonnie’s Guilt and Caroline’s Game Changing Storyline

This was posted on PopWrap bright and early on Friday morning after the premiere. I tweeted it, but somehow it slipped my mind to post it here. An awesome interview with Kat Graham. As always, SPOILER ALERT to those that haven’t watched the premiere yet.

PW: Last night we saw Bonnie continuing to work with The Salvatore brothers despite her season finale declaration — will that continue?

Kat: I hope so. As of right now, [they're filming episode 6] yes. She’s still getting dragged into making the decision between helping The Salvatore’s or not. She doesn’t want to help them but if it has to do with protecting Elena or Caroline or the mortals … they’re her weak spot. That’s her family, so she can’t really say no to that – but she won’t stop trying to stop the vampires.

PW: On that tip, Bonnie was the one who told Damon to heal Caroline with his blood, so the fact she might now be a vampire lies squarely on her shoulders. How much guilt will we see Bonnie feeling next week?

Kat: There’s a lot of guilt there – she’s thinking, “if I had never done this, then none of this would have happened.” But she still blames Damon. She still blames Stefan. Bonnie knows that if they hadn’t come to town in the first place none of this would have happened. One friend would have still been alive, the other would still be normal and her grams wouldn’t have died. There’s a guilt there and a sense of “I don’t want to deal with this” but simultaneously a need to fix it. At the bottom of her heart, she believes that the vampires are the reason this is all happening – and they are, darn it! [laughs]

PW: Tonight ended with a huge shocker — Katherine killed Caroline, seemingly turning her into a vampire — how much does the fallout from that change the direction of season two?

Kat: It affects it completely. When that happened, it altered anything me, Kat Graham, would have thought could happen in episode two. When I read the script, I was like “already? We’re already going there? What are we going to do for episode two?!?” But that’s just the genius of [creators] Kevin [Williamson] & Julie [Plec] – they can create these amazing storylines that completely capture you to the point where you have to watch next week. We’re shooting episode six right now and that moment is still affecting the storyline – it has a huge impact on all the characters and changes everything. Then you have this whole werewolf situation, there’s a lot going on, so you have to watch every episode and pay attention to everything.

DAMON MAKES A DANGEROUS ENEMY — Stefan (Paul Wesley) takes drastic measures to find out the real reason Katherine (Nina Dobrev) has returned to Mystic Falls, and is shocked when she reveals new secrets about what really happened in 1864. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) tries a new tactic to resolve his issues with Mason, (guest star Taylor Kinney)…. but it proves costly. Tyler (Michael Trevino) pushes Mason to tell him the truth about the Lockwoods. Finally, when Katherine delivers an ultimatum, Stefan and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are left with very few options.

Sara Canning, Candice Accola, Zach Roerig and Matt Davis also star. Rob Hardy directed the episode written by Caroline Dries.

CW’s press release on The Return ratings

VAMPIRE DIARIES Delivers Its Best Women 18-34 Ratings since Feb.;

NIKITA delivered year-to-year gains, improving on the SUPERNATURAL debut last season by 12% in women 18-34 and 6% in total viewers.   NIKITA also built on its VAMPIRE DIARIES premiere lead-in by 9% in total viewers (3.6mil v. 3.3mil).

The second season opener of The CW’s sophomore hit THE VAMPIRE DIARIES scored its best women 18-34 (2.8/9) performance since 2/4/10.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES was virtually flat with its explosive season finale last May, in all key demographics.  VAMPIRE DIARIES retained a large chunk of its massive series premiere last year, keeping about 87% of its year ago adults 18-34 (1.9/6) and 90% of its year ago women 18-34 (2.8/9) delivery.

With debuts of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and NIKITA, The CW ranked second on Thursday night among women 18-34 (2.3/5), adults 18-34 (1.6/5), females 12-34 (2.2/7) and persons 12-34 (1.5/5).

Part one and two of Reuters discussion with Ian Somerhalder

Q: What’s in store for your character, Damon?

This season is a different situation for Damon. Damon has fun anyway, but he’s been humbled a little bit, to say the least, by virtue of what happened with Katherine. I think this year, there’s some other elements in town that’s forced Damon to work a little harder and actually get over the things that have hurt him and protect the things that he cares about…He realizes throughout this year that he’s forged relationships and when you forge relationships with people, you have something to lose and something to protect and I think that’s where Damon finds himself. This year, Damon is not having quite as much fun – yet.

Read part one and part two at Reuters.

Thanks for the heads up, Vampire-Diaries.net!

Ratings for Vampire Diaries season 2 premiere revealed

Outside of the NFL universe, the CW’s Vampire Diaries second season premiere scored a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating (that’s down 24% from the series premiere last year). While the series premiere of Nikita drew a 1.4 adults 18-49 rating, that’s identical to Supernatural’s season premiere in that timeslot last season.

In the youth demos that the CW focuses on Vampire Diaries scored a 2.8 rating for women 18-34 down 7% from last year’s series premiere, and a 1.9 for adults 18-34 (down 14%). Nikita scored a 1.9 for women 18-34 (up 12% from last season’s Supernatural premiere) and a 1.3 for adults 18-34 (down 13% from Supernatural).

My guess is that the CW’s emotions are mixed. They have to be reasonably happy with the Nikita numbers, but they cannot be happy with the Vampire Diaries numbers.

Kat Graham: ‘Every episode has something that makes you scream at the TV’

PW: Out of the six, which episode, for you, had the biggest jaw dropping moment?

Kat: I definitely feel like Caroline’s “death” in the first episode is one of the biggest shocks … but the third episode is really nuts too. Something happens where the fate of a main character is left up in the air. Literally every episode has something that makes you fall off your couch and scream at the TV [laughs] it’s just that kind of show. In the third episode, Bonnie does something completely shocking. Four and five show a lot of Katherine and episode six is a huge turner as well – it changes the fate, again, of the rest of the season.

JSYK chats with Nina Dobrev and Katerina Graham

Yup, witches will probably fall into that stuck-in-the-middle category. Katerina reveals that the show is currently filming episode six and she hasn’t dealt with any werewolves yet, but says, “Witches are kind of in the middle of everything. Always. The humans and the vampires. The vampires and the werewolves…People are going to want to manipulate Bonnie to get what they want. I think that goes for anyone who’s trying to become powerful or strong or destroy any other supernatural creature. They’re going to want to use Bonnie.”

Steven R. McQueen on Jeremy’s life and death

“When you lose your father you tend to look for male role models,” McQueen says. “Though his legacy tells him he needs to hate them, the people Jeremy can relate to the most are these vampires, these broken people. When he sees Damon and even Stefan in a way, they’re broken people who have more experience than him. He looks at them with caution but almost as a role model.”

Two new Vampire Diaries BTS photos

The first picture, courtesy of @MissMarisM, is of “Uncle Mason” (and Ian’s back) played by hottie Taylor Kinney (no, not the back). And the second one, featuring Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder in action, is brought to you by @LilMissX. Not hard to understand who Nina’s playing, is it?

Taylor Kinney talks Uncle Mason with Zap2it

Uncle Mason seems to be pretty mellow initially, especially compared to Tyler, but anger is kind of a Lockwood family tradition. Are we going to see Mason show his temper any time soon?

Of course. Mason grew up in Mystic Falls, but he left probably before college, before adulthood, and he’s come of age now. He’s learned to harness his rage and to deal with problems in a more amicable way than lashing out the way that Tyler is right now. He comes back to Mystic Falls because of the death of his brother, but he stays because he empathizes with where Tyler is right now. He recognizes himself in Tyler and he knows the curse that’s in their bloodline. He’s going to try to help Tyler keep from being so on edge all the time.

Julie and Kevin preview tonight’s The Return (featuring new scenes)

The TV Chick talks to Vampire Diaries producers: “It’s a huge journey.”

The Vampire Diaries returns tonight! The sizzling, action-packed, full of crazy twists second season premiere will leave you gasping at your television. Or at the very least, it left me doing that. I could not be happier that this show is back. I love being transported week after week into the mysterious Mystic Falls, and let’s be honest, the Salvatore Brothers are quite eye-pleasing. I recently had the chance to catch up with the cast and producers of the show. Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, the absolutely brilliant (and super sweet) Executive Producers had a lot to say about the upcoming season, werewolves and flashback episodes.

What can we expect in Mystic Falls in the upcoming season?

Kevin Williamson: Katherine being back in Mystic Falls is a bit of a game changer for the show. How is this going to affect Damon and Stefan in terms of Katherine now being back in town? And it’s so hard to talk about it without giving anything away. Everything’s a surprise. She comes back and pretty much stated why she was back. It will be fun to sort of watch that play out. If you watched our show in the past, you know there’s always more than one reason someone’s there and some of the motives of our characters. It’s a huge journey.

Are there any supernatural elements to Mystic Falls?

Julie Plec: Ultimately, that notion is what got Kevin and me to want to do the series in the first place. Because in the books, I think it was a huge civil war battle that shed a lot of blood and because of all the blood that had been shed from the soldiers, it’s just sort of a heightened hot bed of activity, and when we read that, we thought this is a show that can be more than just these characters and just these creatures because this town for whatever reason draws that kind of element in. And the deeper the series gets, hopefully we’ll be able to hold on for as long as possible, but the deeper the series gets, the more we’ll start to get a sense of what other elements might be either long gestating in this town or coming to town because it’s got a strong supernatural pull.

Last year, you were trying to establish the show. Now that you have, do you feel more pressure to add extra elements?

KW: To try and top ourselves? You know there is a lot of pressure to keep it up. It’s a very hard show to write at this moment, because there’s so much genre mixed with relationships and characters. I didn’t even realize how hard it was going to be. But I do think we kind of found our rhythm to our show which is [about] the human relationship and the mythology. And so yes, we are going to continue the mythology. We’re sort of starting back to zero and telling a new story, but it’s a story that you already know half of it because you watched the first season, so it’s sort of the other half. We’re just going to continue the story. There’s so much you still don’t know about 1864. What happened? Why wasn’t Katherine in the tomb? How did she escape? Where did she go? Why did she come to Mystic Falls to begin with? What was in Mystic Falls? So there’s all these fun questions that we’re going to explore and how the Lockwood curse factors into it.

What’s going to happen with the werewolves?

KW: Tyler’s going to sort of learn with the help of his Uncle Mason who comes to town in the very first episode who and what he is. He’s going to learn about the curse, who and what he is, and how he responds to it. It’s going to be a typical growing up story — a sort of coming of age story, but it’s horrible to have all these questions about why you’re the way you are, why you’re so angry and why you always feel so lost. And then you get the answer, and you don’t like it. So it’s going to be a fun journey for him and violent.

JP: It’s a blood line. A lot of our show has to do with bloodlines and who’s descended from who and what and where and family and what your family gives you and how you become what you are and the werewolf curse is in keeping with that.

How is Katherine now different from Katherine in 1864?

KW: It’s going to be interesting to watch. I’m scared to say because it will give away where she’s been. It’s a bit of a secret what she’s been up to. It’s one of the shows you can’t talk about, it sucks.

Will we get any flashbacks with characters that have unfortunately departed in the first season?

KW: Yes.

Will we see any flashback episodes?

KW: Right now, we have three flashback episodes planned and I’m guessing there will be a fourth.

Will we see Isobel reappear in season 2?

KW: Not right away. I don’t have any plans in the first — we’ve sort of broken the whole season, but we haven’t individually broken down the back nine episodes. So you know, I hate to say no and we turn around and do it, and make a liar out of me. So I would just say, I’m not sure. Not in the first half.

Poor Aunt Jenna, she went to bed that night with a possible undead nephew upstairs and her now dead brother downstairs. What’s her journey going to be like this season?

JP: Jenna is going to remain blissfully in the dark, actually. We’ll learn in the first episode that she was actually out talking to the Fire Marshall when all this went down. So she was not at least sleeping through the tornado of Katherine. Katherine sort of said “Oh you need to go downtown and talk to the Fire Marshall.” So we’ll learn that Katherine actually lured Aunt Jenna out of the house before all the craziness happened. One of the most important things in the series is in our opinion is to keep some of our characters and some of the people that live in our world in the dark, as infuriating as it can be, or as silly as it can get, it’s actually very human. It keeps the character very human. So characters like Matt and Jenna for now are going to be those characters that are just sort of like “Hey, that was weird!”

Is that going to complicate things with her and Alaric?

JP: That’s the big problem in their relationship. No matter how strongly Alaric is drawn towards Jenna, there does come a certain point when you say “Wait a second, I’m into something here.” when everything is built on a lie, or an absence of the truth. And so that’s going to be a big source of conflict for his own character as well.

What are we going to see from Bonnie and Tyler who are taking on bigger roles this season?

JP: We’re going to see Tyler — I know Kev touched on it — Tyler is — I heard what he said and it’s so good I’m going to repeat it — Tyler’s spent all this time asking questions “Why am I the way I am?” and very early in the season he’s going to learn the answer to that. And the struggle upon learning the answer to that — that he’s a recipient of this curse — the period of time between learning that and the curse itself being triggered is going to be a really dark, interesting time for him because of everything that comes along with it. There’s a little bit of wish fulfillment there. There’s a little bit of “Hey maybe I could be this, and maybe it wouldn’t be that bad but what is it involve and what would I become?” and there’s some great, great, great stuff for his character. And Bonnie of course is stronger than ever. Bonnie is kicking ass and taking names. And Bonnie’s going to be confronted with a lot of those issues of “You people are my friends, but I fundamentally have an issue with who you are, so how do I balance that, how do I balance my friendship with you with flat out distaste for vampires and what they’ve done to me and a long line of witches and all that.”

The Vampire Diaries season 2 premieres tonight at 8 pm on the CW. Do not miss it!(USA)

EW: Vampire Diaries from A to Z + new promo shots!

In honor of tonight’s season 2 premiere, Entertainment Weekly has some more Vampire Diaries goodies for us! Check them out below and head over to EW for their primer.

Michael Trevino on ‘The Vampire Diaries’: “Tyler Will be Shirtless Sooner Than You Think!”

Do you want to see Mexican heartthrob Michael Trevino shirtless? Well, you’re in luck. The 25-year-old actor—who plays hot-tempered, soon-to-be-werewolf Tyler Lockwood on the CW’s sexy vampire drama, The Vampire Diaries, told Latina.com that the shirt is coming off. Trevino dished on why werewolves are hotter than vampires, whether or not he’s going to get a steamy sex scene, and what you can look forward to on tonight’s premiere.

What’s coming up for your character, Tyler in season two of The Vampire Diaries?
Tyler’s Uncle, Mason Lockwood (Taylor Kinney) is coming into town and is a big part of Tyler’s journey this season. Through Mason, Tyler will come to realize some interesting information about the Lockwood Bloodline.  Not everything is as it seems, and there are some big surprises down the road. It’s been a lot of fun so far, and I’ve been able to explore this character more this season. Tyler is going to be going through a lot this season and I hope that people are entertained by it. I think fans are going to enjoy the “sneaky” Lockwood family.

Did you have to get more muscular for the new season?
My producers never asked me to bulk up, but I took it upon myself to go to the gym a little more this season.

Will we see Tyler shirtless in season two?
Tyler will be shirtless sooner than you think this season.

Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) are known for their provocative sex scenes on the show. Will Tyler get a wild sex scene of his own in season 2?
This is a question you would have to ask [producers] Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, but if you ask me I’d like to think that he will. Stefan and Elena shouldn’t get to have all the fun [Laughs].

Do werewolves run hotter than vampires?
[Laughs] Well, we all know that our Vampires in Mystic Falls use “Vamp Speed” from time to time.  I’m wondering if our Werewolves use wolf speed? But what do you think I’m going to say? Of course, werewolves run hotter!

E! Online’s Kristin review of The Return

Wow. Just wow.

That’s all I can say after watching  tonight’s second season premiere of The Vampire Diaries (thanks to my trusty time-travel machine).

Don’t worry, no big spoilers here (promise), but there are a few things I absolutely must tell you about tonight’s awesome return episode:

  1. Even if you’ve never seen it before, tonight’s TVD premiere will make you realize how sorely TV has been sucking this entire summer season.
  2. If you happen to be a showrunner for another series (especially a new fall contender), I highly encourage you to check out tonight’s TVD (and the May season-one finale, if you haven’t yet) to see just how many jaw-dropping plot twists you can successfully execute in a single episode. Bosses Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec manage to throw in more cliffhangers and plot development in one hour of television than some other series do all season long. And guess what? It works.

Now, for you diehard fans, a taste of what is in store:

  1. The first five minutes alone will have you gasping. It picks up exactly where we left off—with a certain someone giving someone else a five-finger discount.
  2. I honestly can”t count the number of surprises I did not see coming…There are that many.
  3. Whether you like it or not, you diehard Damon (Ian Somerhalder) fans are gonna be more drawn to Stefan (Paul Wesley) than ever. Let’s just say he’s not taking kindly to any threats to his precious Elena (of the kissing kind or otherwise), and you’ll see him protect her in a way that is both ridonkulously hot and notably Damon-esque. (Paul Wesley, you are so owning the role of “Ste-fuh” in this episode, my friend. Kudos.)
  4. Nina Dobrev knocks it out of the park as Katherine, giving the role just the right amount of edge, while not overdoing it, and as a testament to her acting ability: I want to punch Katherine in the face. Yay!
  5. If you’re trying to figure out who’s who tonight, here is your guide to Katherine versus Elena: The bigger the hair, the tighter the pants, the closer to evil.
  6. Ian Somerhalder is fantastic as always, and you’ll spend much of the episode debating whether you want to kiss him or kick him in the teeth.
  7. A certain diehard fan faction who loves a certain coupling will be weeping after tonight’s episode, and I welcome you to our comments section or my Twitter (@kristindsantos) for a little post-mordem group therapy.
  8. The upside? The heartbreak in tonight’s episode sets up what is looking like a fantastic season two. Dare I say possibly even better than season one? Too early to tell, but in case this entire love-letter post didn’t give it away, I’m feelin’ it.

The Wall Street Journal interviews Ian Somerhalder: “It’s going to be cool.”

For Ian Somerhalder it’s good being the bad guy. The new season of “The Vampire Diaries” premieres tonight on the CW, and Somerhalder, a former cast member on “Lost,” has become a breakout star in his role as Damon Salvatore, a handsome, anti-heroic vampire who sometimes shows a softer side.

In real life, Somerhalder, a native of Covington, Louisiana, recently helped launch Go Green Mobile Power, a company that provides solar, wind and biodiesel mobile energy generators. Somerhalder says he’s been inspired to take more action in his life after meeting spiritualist Deepak Chopra, whom he calls his “new bff.”

The Wall Street Journal spoke to Somerhalder about his role on the show, and what the coming season has in store.

Speakeasy: What can we look forward to from Damon this season?

Ian Somerhalder: Some changes. Changes in the sense that in the season finale, Damon raised the question that he came to this town with the intention of destroying everyone and now [things have changed]. He started building relationships and when we forge relationships, we raise the stakes, and I think having said that he’s not as hell bent on destroying the town this season. He and his brother are going to discover a few problems, outside of Elena, and they’re going to have to bind together to protect what they love and to protect each other.

Is there anything you can tell us about the new season without giving away any spoilers?

Katherine comes back and I’ve been eagerly awaiting Katherine despite the fact that it’s going to make Damon’s life harder. Katherine presents a plethora of problems because she’s a threat to everyone. She can kill anyone of us in the blink of an eye and that poses a very serious problem. I think that the Lockwood family is also going to pose pretty serious problems for the Salvatores. [With the ability to dive back into time], you get the assemblage of the events that lead up to right now. You get to see normal high school kids sort of battling these ultra supernatural issues. It’s going to be cool.

Why do you think “Vampire Diaries” is finding success with so many other vampire shows saturating the market?

The vampire genre right now is huge. Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec know how to mold together different genres to appeal to broad spectrum of people and to layer to make them work. Our creators have the capabilities to do that. Our books had quite a following. “True Blood” is a super R-rated, campy version of the genre and “Twilight” is the wildly successful movie franchise but a 13-year-old girl can’t watch “True Blood” with her parents. It gets very uncomfortable, very quickly. “Vampire Diaries” fires all pistons and our show luckily seems to be reaching multiple demographics and resonating with many people.

Did your role on “Lost “prepare you in anyway for Vampire Diaries?

Boone was such a serious guy and I always had this notion that being so dark was compelling and interesting what I realized is people that have fun are compelling and interesting and Boone never had a chance to settle on the island and find his place [and have fun]. It’s my fault for not finding that for Boone. Damon is such a wildly charismatic, multi-layered person that has so much fun and he has reasons that are righteous but he has ill intentions. Now i think that’s having to change a bit and I think he’s becoming more of a well rounded person but I can’t guarantee that’s going to stick. Doing a show the size of a “Lost” definitely prepared me to be on another network show like this.

You once said you don’t like blood, has that changed with your time on the set?

Nope. I had to have blood taken just for your annual check up and watching it come out into the butterfly looking needle is quite fascinating stuff. Looking up and holding it up you see the viscosity of it and when you flip it upside down you see it has nutrients and cells. I don’t want to see blood spewing out but I don’t mind it in controlled environment. Does it make me squeamish? No. I grew up as a country boy. I don’t mind it all. I just don’t like seeing it come out of people when they are in pain.

Another Vampire show out there, “True Blood,” is set in Louisiana. As a native of Louisiana, what do you think about the show?

I love it. I love that my home state is the backdrop to the show. I so desperately wanted to do “True Blood” but blew my audition with Alan Ball–but I think it ended up working out pretty well.

What other projects are you working on now?

None. We shoot “Vampire” 10 months a year. The major of other thing in my life is a green mobile power company, which is a huge and exciting daunting task. It’s pretty amazing. Launching this company and I’m starting a foundation.

What does the company do?

The company Go Green Mobile Power provides off the grid wind, solar power, biodiesel energy generators that can be dropped out of a helicopter.

What size are the devices?

It’s like a trailer that you can pull behind a truck. They range from 7 to 50 feet long, and you can drop the devices via helicopter or plan in a disaster situation…After seeing what I saw with BP and watching my home be destroyed, I would just like to put it out there that this technology exists and I really hope to make our future bright and green not black and oily. I can’t let this go by anymore. I can’t let time move on without fighting tooth and nail and hopefully being a part of a revolution that is positive. What we’re doing to the planet is inexcusable. It’s time we put our thinking caps on. Look, we need energy but there are other methods and means.

How was your home in Louisiana affected?

All of those marshes, all of that water that I had while growing up that fed my family and other families, is gone. My great great great grandchildren will never be able to enjoy that place like I did. The ironic part is I was looking forward to spending a lot more time there and I had to not only watch all these families [suffer] but I had to restructure the way I want to live my life down there.

Maybe in 10 years we’ll find out what happened but until then we’ll never know. I just want to fix it and move forward with the public and like the public I never [want] to see that again. That breaks my heart, makes me angry, makes me saddened but it has inspired me. It has inspired the hell out of me. Whatever I can do to contribute, I’ll do.

Katerina on which Salvatore brother she prefers: “I’d take them both.”

Now that evil vampire Katherine is back in Mystic Falls, Nina Dobrev is getting a chance to show off her dark side — and she’s taking her rage out on Katerina Graham’s Bonnie! “It’s very odd to have one of your best friends suddenly grabbing your neck,” Katerina tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively about her face-off against Nina. “But she’s playing a character and doing a great job.”

I can imagine it would feel odd, especially considering how close all the cast members are when the cameras stop rolling! Katerina tells us she recently went out with a bunch of her co-stars — including Nina, Steven R. McQueenSara Canning and Candice Accola – for a joint birthday celebration (Katerina recently turned the big 2-1, while Steven turned 22.)

But there is one question even Katerina can’t seem to answer: Which Salvatore brother she prefers, Paul Wesley’s Stefan or Ian Somerhalder’s Damon!

“I like really intense, smart guys like Stefan could be,” she tells us. “But also playful, funny and sarcastic like Damon. Very daring. I’d take them both. I’m greedy!”

We certainly can’t blame Katerina for not being able to choose between the vampire brothers. Fortunately, HollywoodLifers, you don’t have to choose! You can have Stefan, Damon and the entire Mystic Falls crew when The Vampire Diaries returns for its second season at 9 p.m. TONIGHT (Sept. 9) on The CW.

TV Guide chats to Nina Dobrev and Julie Plec

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains some key plot details from Season 2.

When we learned that Katherine was not among those unfortunate vampire souls sealed inside the tomb, it was clear that Stefan and Damon’s complicated lover would show up on The Vampire Diaries at some point. Her sneak attack on Damon during the season finale was just the beginning. Season 2 promises to be, as the CW’s promos shout, the year of the Kat.

“We felt like it would be really cool and powerful to bring in the woman these men loved first,” says executive producer Julie Plec. “Just when you thought you were [deciding] who’s right for Elena — Damon or Stefan — you add the, well, what if Katherine doesn’t want any of that to happen?”

As a result, Nina Dobrev is pulling double duty this season, playing both good-hearted Elena and the Machiavellian Katherine with an unprecedented frequency. “It’s hard enough to play one character, much less two,” Plec says.

Katherine’s arrival is the worst-kept secret in Mystic Falls, as one by one our protagonists are first briefly duped by Elena’s doppelgänger. The effect is disorienting at first, but Plec points to subtle shifts in Dobrev’s performances that make it clear who’s back in town. “It’s all told in her big brown eyes; her portrayal of Katherine, it’s like the life, the good, the humanity has been stripped out of them. And then you add a couple of curly hair pieces and some mascara and you’re good to go,” she says.

Dobrev agrees. “It shows in the eyes, but before you get to the eyes, you’ve got to think differently. I’m not thinking the same things when I play Elena when I play Katherine.” Her different posture and wardrobe also help complete the illusion.”There’s a way that I carry myself when I put high heels on that I don’t when I’m in Converse.”

At first blush, Katherine’s master plan has an anarchical glee. “Why not go back into town and mess with your ex-boyfriend, or in this case, two of them?” Dobrev says. Eventually though, both Plec and Dobrev say that her true mission will be revealed. It promises to be a season-long journey, as Dobrev indicates that Katherine is a woman of mystery. “She’s not going to give it all up and nor does she need to because she calls the shots,” she says. “Everyone is and should be very scared of her.”

First up, the brothers Salvatore will have to deal with the most dreaded ex of all. It’s fair to say that Katherine’s presence will disturb things at the most basic character level. Everyone involved with the show talks about a subtle sibling switcheroo, personality-wise.

Stefan (Paul Wesley) remains steadfast in his love for Elena and in his antipathy for Katherine, maintaining that he never really loved her. “We get to see what I like to call Badass Stefan a little bit more, you know, he’s not going to take any s—,” Plec says. “At this point it’s not just about, ‘Oh, I love Elena and I have to be her guardian angel,’ it’s ‘Don’t mess with me and this town and these people and my girl.’ It’s a much more aggressive stance.”

Damon (Ian Somerhalder), on the other hand, is more conflicted when it comes to Katherine’s reappearance and his still-simmering passions for Elena. “The fun of Damon is that any time we see the romantic leading man shining through, inevitably he’ll do something to screw that up,” Plec says. Indeed, Damon will perform acts both noble and treacherous in the season premiere. “He’s a constant contradiction, trying to struggle against the fact that the two women that are most important in his life are causing him much grief and that his impulses are to both kiss them and kill them.”

But wait, weren’t two characters about to die in the season finale? It’s no spoiler to say that both Jeremy and Caroline find their way back from the brink of their initially life-threatening conditions. But since this is a show that defines “living” really loosely, the future is much more complicated for both of them.

After taking a vial of Anna’s blood and a fistful of pills, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) seemed poised for either death or a life of blood-sucking. “By the end of the first episode, we’ll know whether he’s a vampire or not a vampire,” Plec says. Without revealing that juicy tidbit, Jeremy will continue to struggle to fit in and find some modicum of happiness, especially in the wake of Anna’s death. “Happiness for him is always relative because it’s usually followed instantly by tragic death,” Plec says with a laugh. For now, she says, he’ll make new, unlikely friendships — with people we’ve already met.

As evidenced by her last-minute turn for the worst, Caroline (Candice Accola) has sustained serious injuries. “She’s dealing with the fact that she almost died in a car wreck, what that does to her physically and emotionally,” Plec says. “We’ll see a lot more of her trying to understand her own self and her relationship with her mother and her friends, and then watching where this fun, zippy girl, who has provided a lot of good comic relief, [goes] when she recovers.”

It’s hard being a witch on a show called The Vampire Diaries. Just ask Bonnie (Katerina Graham), whose decision in the season finale doomed many vampires to a fiery death. “Witches are always getting drawn into vampire problems,” Plec says. “I think that was a line that Gram said, and that’s going to be a lot of what Bonnie is going to have to deal with.” Her bold stance against vampires will estrange her from Elena. An added wrinkle is that Katherine will prove to be much stronger than Bonnie, whose spells won’t work when it comes to Elena’s evil twin. “It poses a lot of questions as to why it doesn’t affect her,” Dobrev says.

Then, with a sigh, Plec turns to the subject of the other worst-kept secret of Season 2: There will be a werewolf. If the plot twist sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve already seen the mythologies of both Twilight and True Blood introduce werewolves into their worlds. Plec is confident that her show will do it just as successfully, but she admits that it can be challenging to be in the wake of so many other similar narratives.

“You want to be able to follow all your creative instincts and then you have to turn it around and be like, ‘Damn it, last night’s episode of True Blood just totally did that.’” she says. “It can be frustrating as a storyteller because you actually have to adjust and reevaluate and push away from where you might naturally want to go because you’re afraid of people finding it either redundant or a rip-off.”

As a result, we will see how Tyler (Michael Trevino), transforms incrementally, starting with the most basic emotional shift stemming from his father’s surprise death. “He doesn’t understand why he’s such a d—, why he’s so angry and why he gets in fights with his friends,” Plec says. “Now on top of that, he’s a teenage boy who lost his father.”

Helping him on his journey will be his uncle Mason (Taylor Kinney), who will teach him about the Lockwood family curse. “What we’ll learn is that the werewolves work very hard to not give any details and not share anything in hopes of staying secret,” Plec says. She hints that we won’t see a full-fledged wolf for a while. Instead, in human form, they’ll take on a more gymnastic affect, unlike vampires, who tend to just zip in and out of frame.

If that sounds like a lot to handle in one hour-long show, Plec says that unlike in the first season, stories will start to merge this year. “I think you’ll find more integration between the human and the [supernatural] story lines,” she says. “I wouldn’t say that that means that everyone wakes up and knows everything about everything, but the way the characters are connected to each other will be a [supernatural] story.”

Season 2 of Vampire Diaries premieres Thursday at 8/7c on the CW.

TV Fanatic interviews with Sara Canning and Katerina Graham

What can we look forward to this season?

Without being allowed to say much, some of the major points that have been established are Katherine returning and how that’s going to affect the brothers and the entire town. Jenna has let Katherine into the house and it’s going to create a lot of tension with her and Elena because Katherine has become this puppet master and you never know who is who. Jenna is one of the only characters left who doesn’t know about the supernatural beings in Mystic Falls. For her, it will really test her as a parental figure and as friend to have Katherine messing with everyone and misleading Jenna. There are other major secrets that are being revealed.

Read the entire Sara interview over at TV Fanatic.

Does season two push the bar even more than the first season?
Just the first episode alone raises the bar. It’s very, very rare in TV for the second season of any show to overtake the first one. But the first episode back just… I read it and I was shocked. This is my job, and I shouldn’t be shocked [laughs]. I read it just like a fan. When I get a new script I sit down and I can’t stop reading. It’s not a script to me, it’s an amazing story and I have to know what happens next…

People need to film themselves watching the Vampire Diaries first episode, and seeing their reactions. I would like nothing more than to see the fans YouTube their reactions and then talking about it. I’m dying to know what they think. Fans, Tweet me the link to your YouTube reaction!

Ian Somerhalder Talks Bromance, Romance & Season 2 of ‘The Vampire Diaries’

‘The Vampire Diaries’ could easily have been written off as just another CW teen show, but the sexiness of the cast instantly took it to extremely watchable status. Alongside Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley, star Ian Somerhalder is responsible for a third of that sex appeal … at least.

After a first season of some high highs (tricking his way into his brother’s relationship with Elena) and very low lows (getting duped by the vampire who turned him), Somerhalder’s bad boy bloodsucker Damon Salvatore is in a very dark place in Season 2.

I caught up with Somerhalder to hear all about playing vulnerable, which of his castmates he has a blast shooting with, who Damon might find “useful” this season and the pretty racy scene fans have been waiting for.

Bonus: He talks around it a bit, but I got him to choose whether Damon is on Team Katherine or Team Elena. Whose side are you on?

It was quite a finale for Damon last season … we’ve never seen him like that!
[Laughs] Yeah, he is being humbled. It’s interesting, the ups and downs, art imitating life, which is kind of fun to watch, but there are a couple dynamics that are going to start to change. At the beginning of Season 1, Damon’s sort of this almighty, powerful, sadistic, kind of funny individual … and then he just gets leveled. [Laughs] Over and over and over again.

Well on one hand it was nice to see Damon vulnerable, because it proved he still has a hint of humanity, but on the other hand, he can’t stay like that for long, can he?
No, I hope not. You know, Season 2, you start to understand that there are certain elements that’ve come to town that sort of force Damon to shift his focus quite a bit and actually ask himself what’s important to him. I think throughout this first year, he’s forged these relationships. He initially came to town … like Damon said in the finale, “I came here wanting to destroy it, now I find myself wanting to protect it. How the hell has that happened?” And I think that it has happened. Any time you forge relationships with people and you have a vested interest in their safety and well-being, you essentially raise the stakes. You pretty much do anything to protect that. I think he’s found himself, for the first time in 150 years, actually caring about something.

But Damon and Stefan will still be bickering, right?
The end all be all is he loves his brother, and his brother loves him. No matter how many times they’ve literally had the opportunity to kill one another, they’re still walking around. There are obviously major differences, but I think Damon and Stefan are gonna have to set those aside and actually focus on what’s the give and the take of letting that age-old vendetta go away. They actually have to focus and protect what they love, which is gonna be interesting, by virtue of the fact that Katherine is back.

Oh Katherine … is it bad that I just love to hate her?
Katherine is just one of those individuals you don’t want to f*** with … excuse my language, that you don’t want to mess with. I thought Damon was badass and just wrong in so many ways. Katherine is a sadistic, selfish bitch, and she is gonna play them like a fiddle. And she crushes Damon … she does, she crushes him … over and over and over again. [Laughs] Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. At this point, it’s like 10 — shame on me! [Laughs] Shame on Damon! He feels like such an idiot. And when we feel that stupid, what do we do? We lash out like a petulant child, you know?

Which is what he does best! Drinking, dancing in the rafters …
[Laughs] Exactly.

How soon after last season’s finale do we pick up in the Season 2 premiere?
Minutes, seconds … we start off in the finale. Literally. Which is great because to be honest with you, even just being away from the show for a couple of months, I sort of lost my footing on what was going on. It’s really helpful starting where we left off, and even going back a moment, back into the season finale. What’s starting to happen this season as well is someone we know very well … there are other vampires around now that were very unlikely candidates, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s fun to see dynamics change and to watch someone sort of figure out being a vampire when they’re so new at it. I’ve been doing it for a year and a half, and Damon’s been doing it for 150 years like Stefan, so you start to understand what it’s really kind of about. To watch someone go through the process of that is a lot of fun actually. [Laughs]

Lots of hazing, I’m sure. Damon doesn’t seem like the best teacher though …
Aw, Damon’s a good teacher! He just might teach you what he wants to teach you. [Laughs] Whatever’s most beneficial for him.

Now you have to pick, stake to your heart — do you think Damon is Team Katherine or Team Elena?
Well, Katherine is really just a figment of his imagination, and now sort of a tangible metaphor for his naiveté. It’s kind of a strange dichotomy because there’s a certain naiveté that comes with youth, and when you’re in love it’s amplified exponentially. To carry that around as you grow older — for 150 years — about a woman who you soon find doesn’t care about you at all. And then, for some reason, you meet her doppleganger, who is this sweet, innocent, strong young woman. I will be so bold to say that Damon’s not Team Katherine. It would help Damon if Katherine was gone or dead.

So then Team Elena it is!
Yep.

What’s been the scene in Season 2 that you think fans will flip over? Something particularly fun maybe?
There’s a pretty racy scene with Elena and Damon. I wouldn’t necessarily call it fun … there hasn’t been a lot of fun scenes to be honest with you. This isn’t a very fun time for Damon. But in the face of adversity and chaos, Damon still has a really good time. But [the scene with Elena] is steamy and it’s been waited for … you get a really big, huge glimpse into Damon’s vulnerability and what the power of attraction can do. That’s all I’ll say.

Any new vampire powers this season?
Just more powerful powers. Katherine is a lot stronger than Damon. New powers may be coming this season … Damon could use some new powers, babe!

How will Damon be handling Bonnie’s big threat?
Bonnie (Katerina Graham) can hold her own, unfortunately, with Damon. Anyone who can put Damon down on the ground — and not in a sexual way — is a problem. [Laughs] She’s a big problem for him. She’s a contender … I think if anything, she’s gonna prove to be useful. Katherine is going to be a major, major, major problem. Katherine is a bigger problem than Damon was in Season 1, because she’s three times more sadistic and seductive. I think what she wants is far greater than love, which is even scarier.

I think Matt Davis might be clinically insane, tweeting under a pen name, but fans are loving the back and forth you guys have on Twitter.
What is so amazing is, if in fact he is clinically insane, it is such a beautiful thing. I love that man. We totally have a bromance. Damon and Alaric and Elena spend a little bit of time together this season, and I think I can speak for Matt Davis and Nina Dobrev and myself when I say that we love being together on set. The three of us have a blast when we’re shooting stuff.

Sara Canning to Starry Mag: “As an actor, you tell a story the best as you can.”

Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?

A) Right now it is all about “The Vampire Diaries.” We’re in kind of an intense shooting schedule here in Atlanta. We just started shooting our fifth episode so everybody is just kind of gung-ho about our second season. I’ve also been doing a lot of promoting a Canadian indie film I did last year in between shooting “The Vampire Diaries” pilot and the show being picked up, with me moving to Atlanta. I shot a Canadian gothic period piece that has been doing very well in Canada and the film festival circuits, which is called Black Field.

Q) What is new this season on “The Vampire Diaries” and with your character Jenna Sommers?

A) I think one of the biggest things that the viewers are looking forward to is the return of Katherine. You have seen the tense moment at the end of season one and that will definitely be addressed in the first episode. I think that’s really going to effect every character. We’ve seen Jenna let Katherine (Nina Dobrev) into the house so she’s sort of been a catalyst for everything that is about to go down. I think that is going to play a big part for Jenna, how she is going to deal with Katherine being around and her not knowing who she is. Matt Davis and I were also working together at the later part of the first season and we’ve seen a lot of stop and start with a relationship developing between them. They got stuck, but there is so much chemistry between them. There are so many other factors that aren’t letting things be easy for them. We get to see things grow between them, maybe in a positive way, but I don’t think it will ever be easy for them. The fact that Alaric, unbeknownst to Jenna, has an alliance with a group of vampires that her niece is involved with…That alone puts a stress on the relationship since there are a lot of secrets.

Q) What made you originally want to be a part of the show?

A) I read the pilot of “The Vampire Diaries” back in Vancouver, when I lived there. I thought it was such a fabulous show. Of course, it’s a show about vampires, but what struck me right away was how well developed each character was and I really cared about all of these people living in this small town. I love vampires and as soon as I read the pilot I thought, “Oh, people are really loving vampires right now.” They are sort of involved in a pop culture sensation. I’ve always loved the darker side of the vampire stories. So, I was really excited to audition for the show and then to be a part of it was incredible. It was the first pilot I had ever done and I realized how lucky and blessed I am do that.

Q) Had you read any of the books before becoming a part of the show?

A) I hadn’t read it before I got my audition, but as soon as I got my character breakdown for Jenna and learned what the story was about, I picked up the first novel in the series and read that. As soon as we found out we were going to series then I read all the books. I was excited to be part of the show and I wanted to be well versed with what exactly the tone of the show is and who the characters are. We’ve had a lot of plot lines sort of veer from the novel, everything hasn’t been 100% true to the novel, but the basics are there of this wonderful concept of the love triangle between these two vampire brothers, Elena and Katherine. It was really great to read the novel to get a feel for her problems and point more to the story.

Q) What has been the most challenging aspect of playing Jenna?

A) I think one of the most interesting challenges of this role is that I am a part of this cast that’s really close and they are really good friends, but I play a lot older than them. We have the whole dynamic of people going to the same high school and doing things together and then Jenna is sort of in a different boat. Playing a parental guardian has been really interesting because I’m twenty-three years old. So, I am quite a bit younger than Jenna is and that’s been a pretty significant challenge. It’s just wrapping my head around the responsibilities she’s taken on and making her that young hearted character that the writers wanted. She’s just a flawed girl who had done her share of partying and drugs and had terrible relationships with guys, but is also this very loving aunt who wants to be the best friend while knowing she has a lot of responsibility all of a sudden. She knows she has to do a good job of it since she has two lives in her hands now.

Q) Was there instant chemistry when the cast began working together or did it take a bit of time to develop?

A) From shooting the pilot in Vancouver, everyone just really clicked and we’ve truly gone through this entire experience together. From that new exciting feeling of shooting the pilot to all of us relocating down to Atlanta. Now that we’ve known each other for a year and a half, we’re like a married couple made up of ten people. It’s us and the crew. We just know each other inside and out. We get along so well, but I think one of the things that keeps us so close is the fact that we can talk to each other about anything. If we have any concerns about anything, then we can sit down and have a conversation about it. We really are a family. We maintain that by doing things together and always speaking what’s on our mind.

Q) What’s been your most memorable moment from shooting “The Vampire Diaries?”

A) I think one of the coolest things for us as a cast happened last year. We had heard numbers of people watching the show and they were really great, but it was when we won our first award (The People’s Choice Award). I don’t think we knew we were nominated until a couple days before. We were all here working and no one was at the award ceremony to actually accept it. We weren’t even aware of the attention the show was garnering. I think when we won the award it was just this concrete “well done” with a pat on the back. That was really exciting and we were all kind of ecstatic and grateful. We didn’t really see it coming so it was all the more exciting because of that.

Q) The show has garnered a lot of online support. How does that make you feel?

A) It’s not a shock to me that the show is doing well. The fan side of it is just a new experience for me. I’ve been working in the film and television industry for a few years now, but for a long time I was working in Canada doing smaller scale stuff and a lot of independent films. I think I’ve never actually been recognized for my work and it’s actually a very interesting sensation. It’s bizarre and so cool. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it, but it’s very flattering. I got to be apart of a cast meet and greet last season and it blew my mind. They let about 1500 people in and the excitement that these people had for the show was unbelievable. It’s so cool and it’s such a validation of your work. As an actor, you tell a story the best as you can and to find that people are completely invested in the story and it’s really cool. It’s a very big validation of what we do and I am just so grateful for the fans that we have.

Q) Why do you think people continue to tune in to see the show?

A) The plot thickens every week. Sometimes I’ll read an episode and think, “What?! I did not see that coming!” I haven’t read the sixth episode yet and I’ve been hearing rumors that some crazy stuff goes down in the next episode. I’m just as excited as the audience to see what happens. I also think the Salvatore brothers are fascinating. I think the writers have done such a great job of writing their history and their relationship is well developed. It’s a rare look at this family and what they’ve done to each other for the past 145 years. You don’t get to see that very often in television. I think it is that and all the other characters on the show. There is so much drama and so much heartache, but there is also a lot of comedy in the show. There are just some really quirky fun people and I think you want to follow them to see what happens to all of them. You want to see how they deal with these supernatural beings living in Mystic Falls.

Q) Where can people go online to learn more about you?

A) There are fan sites that have links to the cast. I don’t have Twitter, but I am thinking about it. I think if you did any “The Vampire Diaries” search they’ve done a good job of linking up the sites to make it one giant network.

Telefilm Magazine interviews Paul Wesley

There is a question that run through the head of Italian fans for months: why did you not come to the Telefilm Festival in Milan?

(He looks puzzled at me) Because nobody invited me, otherwise I would have willingly come. I literally go crazy for Italy!

Then consider yourself informally booked for next year. In addition to petitions to invite you for festivals I guess that fans ask you everything. Until now how many of them have asked to be bitten
(Laughs) Not many, because Stefan is a good vampire. Usually they vehicle these requests to Ian Somerhalder… I think. However, someone always try to ask a bite.

How do you feel working with Kevin Williamson? Have you ever seen his Dawson’s Creek?
Yes, certainly! I grew up with Dawson’s Creek and I always watched it. In fact, since then I have a deep admiration for Kevin Williamson both for this show than for Scream. Tt is still strange to think that a figure who influenced so much my childhood now has chosen me to work with him!

Have you read all the Vampire Diaries books?
I started doing it when I got the part but at some point I saw that the history of the show would have taken also different directions and I stopped.

[…]

He [Stefan] believes in eternal love, and you?
You’re right, he is surely the most romantic character I’ve ever played. I believe in true love as well. I know it exists because I saw it. My grandparents have taught it to me by example, they have been together since they were 16.

Are you intrigued by the idea of immortality?
Yes, but only if connected to the possibility to choice or not to end it, as happens to Stefan who can decide to take off the ring.

If you could live forever, what would you do?
I would use this possibility for the sake of the collectivity, I do not take advantage for selfish reasons, like Gollum in Lord of the Rings who wins “his treasure” and hides it. Everything revolves around this: When you have a power and a privilege, how you decide to use it? The vampires mythology, in my opinion, is a huge metaphor of life.

Wouldn’t you do any craziness?
Only one: to travel in space to explore without fear of what I would face. I might even get lost, but then I would have all the time to find the way back and in 5 million years I would still be walking around galaxies!” (Laughs)

If you could live a day in the life of Damon, what would you do? After all he is the amusing brother…
You’ll see that Stefan will learn to have fun and he will amaze you, though he is always the hero who likes to save the world. Damon also found some sort of balance in him being a bit evil and sociopathic, but I don’t know if I would live one of his days.

How is possible that you never thought to play Damon?
Actually, I thought about it! I also went to the audition for the role of Damon. To play the villain remains the dream of every actor. To dive into the dark side of human nature and explore situations to the limit (which you do not ever would live in daily life) is part of the charm of this work. What I hope is some kind of twist from the past. Who can tell what he did in his life over one hundred years?

Paul also replies to two questions – about being a fan of vampire genre and which of Stefan’s powers he would like to have. We already know the answers, so I didn’t translate them.

AXN SciFi Russia promo of The Vampire Diaries

Major season 2 premiere spoiler from BuddyTV

Ready?

In the season 2 premiere, at least one major character dies. That’s all you’re getting, and it should leave you with plenty of questions.

Is it more than one person? Is the death permanent? Does the death or deaths have anything to do with the cliffhangers from last season, or was that just misdirection?

Season 1 left several characters in peril. Jeremy took an overdose of pills trying to kill himself to turn into a vampire. Caroline was seriously injured in a car accident. Jonathan was stabbed by Katherine. However, this is The Vampire Diaries, so none of those circumstances necessarily lead to death.

Matt Davis named Hollywood Crush’s Hump Day Hottie

Okay so he isn’t a bloodsucker, but he does manage to get our blood pumping week after week as one of the many, many male hotties on “The Vampire Diaries.” With the show returning on Thursday for what is sure to be an action-packed season two, we want to take a moment to learn a bit more about Matthew Davis and honor him as this week’s Hump Day Hottie.

Press play on the video below to see more of Matthew, and then keep reading for more details about him!

MTV Shows

Vital Stats: This Salt Lake City, Utah native attended college at the University of Utah. When he isn’t being all cool in real life, he tweets under a pseudonym, Ernesto Riley, and weighs in on everything from the Biebs to philosophy. Now 32, it seems that our boy is single (or at least isn’t publicly in a relationship). We know a great place he can mingle (cough, MTV offices, cough).

Where you might have already seen him: He played Elle Woods’ sort of terrible beau, Warner, in “Legally Blond,” before starring in a number of flicks including “Blue Crush” and the “Donnie Darko” sequel, “S. Darko.” But, it’s what he’s done on the small screen that has had girls swooning for quite some time. He had a role on the short-lived “What About Brian” before settling down in Mystic Falls.

Why you should take notice of him now: He plays sort of brooding and uber tough history teacher Alaric Saltzman on “Vampire Diaries.” And when he isn’t trying to woo Elena’s aunt, Jenna, or pining over his vampire wife, Isobel, he’s just trying to fend off the fiendish vamps that are trying to take over the small town he works in. But as Sara Canning, who plays Jenna, has explained, it won’t be easy for her and Alaric to settle down.

“I don’t think it’s going to remain all sunshine and rainbows,” she hinted. “I haven’t gotten the exact storyline, and I think things could change, but there’s so much conflict anyway. I think the fact that Alaric is dating Jenna, and knowing that her niece is dating a vampire and being in an alliance with these vampires—I think that alone will cause some pretty major conflicts. I think we’ll see some happy times and see how things progress from there.”

Until next week, when we chose another Hump Day Hottie, you can salute Matthew by pressing play on the video above!

Zap2it’s Carina MacKenzie reviews The Return

With only 24 hours to go before the Season 2 premiere of “The Vampire Diaries,” fans have just enough time to prepare themselves for the emotional roller coaster. Strap on those safety belts, Salvatore fans.

You’re about to see everyone’s A-game.  From the writers to the cast, every single person involved puts forth his or her best-ever performance in this episode, “The Return.” Ian Somerhalder must have spent his summer coming up with a whole new repertoire of smirks and scowls, and Paul Wesley‘s knack for nailing subtle moments shines. Nina Dobrev is so convincing as both Katherine and Elena that I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that she actually does have an evil twin who is doing half the job for her. Zap2it chose Michael Trevino and Steven R. McQueen as two of the most underrated TV actors, and I’m sure that by the end of this episode, you’ll agree.

I don’t want to give away too much — mostly because I made some very embarrassing noises while watching, and I don’t think I should have to be alone in that. Here’s what I can tell you without ruining your fun… or mine:

  • First thing’s first – this episode is hot. Between Katherine’s fashion choices, a good long look at Wesley’s abs, and one of the most sizzling make-out scenes I’ve ever witnessed on screen, I’m expecting a run on cold showers around 9 p.m. EST tomorrow.
  • When Vicki died in the first season, we learned that nobody on this show is safe. Keep that in mind. If there’s anything I know about “The Vampire Diaries,” it’s that if you think things are going to be okay… you’re wrong.
  • Two characters will share a first kiss.
  • Somerhalder and I spoke over the summer about how much he hates Damon’s most vulnerable moments. Let’s just say he must have really, really, really hated one of the scenes in this episode. Really.
  • Stefan’s protective instincts will emerge in a way they never have before. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.
  • Someone will do something unforgivable.
  • Tyler’s rage will reach a new level. I gasped out loud during one particularly charged scene.
  • What you won’t see: Alaric. Matt Davis is absent from this episode, but with so much action packed into it, you probably won’t miss him… much. This doesn’t foreshadow his presence throughout the season, though. I hear that Alaric’s storylines will still be essential to the plot, and he and Damon will become even more entangled as they try to find answers.

If you feel like you might die of anticipation before you see “The Return,” don’t fret. Zap2it has a veritable wealth of “Vampire Diaries” goodness coming your way before (and after) the episode airs, including an exclusive interview that will go live immediately as the credits roll on the east coast.

More of Zap2it’s Ian interview: “Love makes you stupid.”

On the Sept. 9 Season 2 premiere of “The Vampire Diaries,” the Salvatore brothers find themselves in a familiar situation.

They’re once again fighting over a woman. In 1864, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) were torn apart by their mutual obsession with Katherine (Nina Dobrev). Now, despite having 150 years to learn from their mistakes, they’ve both fallen for the less lethal (but equally gorgeous) Elena.

“Love makes you stupid,” Somerhalder tells me, by way of explanation, during Zap2it‘s exclusive visit to the show’s Atlanta set.  “Just like wars, famine, the BP oil spill, we have the attention spans of a mosquito, and we don’t remember what made us unhappy in history.”

Dobrev says that despite Elena’s involuntary thoughts about Damon, she still loves Stefan. “It’s always been Stefan,” she tells me. If that’s the case, Damon might be in for some serious heartbreak… again.

“It may be harder the second time around by virtue of the fact that you already know what it feels like for this to happen to you,” Somerhalder muses. “When you’re in love for the first time it’s the most unbelievable feeling, and the second time you get your heart broken you become a little more guarded. You become a little more sensible about how you throw your emotions around. But here’s the kicker… you do it again, and you do it again, and you do it again.”

This may be good news for all of the fans hoping to see Damon and Elena hook up this season. No matter how often they hurt each other, human nature (and vampire nature) could lead them to forgive the unforgivable.

Of course, the same could be said for Damon and Katherine.

Heartbreak is an experience that we can all relate to, but most of us don’t have to suffer its consequences for 150 years. After finally allowing himself to open up to someone again, if Damon is rejected, things could get bloody. “He’s either going to shut down or explode,” Somerhalder says, grinning dangerously. “And I welcome either one.”

For more of Ian’s thoughts on falling in and out of love, watch my video from our chat at the set of the Lockwood mansion. (Apologies for the shaky camerawork and occasional background noise – stealing a quiet moment was nearly impossible on such a busy day!)

TV Guide’s preview of Vampire Diaries season 2

IGN interview with Nina: “The premiere is going to be shocking and huge and exciting.”

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. This is IGN. We appeal to guy’s stuff. But I’m here to tell you, if you haven’t been watching, The Vampire Diaries is a really cool show. What looked like a Twilight clone when it first began quickly evolved into a complex, layered story with a ton of surprising twists and turns and a very detailed and involving mythology.

Playing not one but two key components to that mythology is Nina Dobrev. The actress has the lead role as the human Elena, but also has had the opportunity to play Katherine, the evil vampire who started the whole story by turning brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) into vampires in 1864. Katherine had previously appeared only in flashbacks, until the shocking Season 1 finale revealed she had returned to the town of Mystic Falls – and was quickly up to her old, bloody tricks.

I had the opportunity to speak to Dobrev about the new season ofVampire Diaries, which premieres this Thursday, and the challenges and rewards of playing two characters simultaneously.

IGN TV: So suffice to say, Katherine is going to be stirring up a lot of trouble as we begin Season 2?

Nina Dobrev: Yes, Katherine is most definitely back. She’s back and she’s going to wreak havoc. The thing about Katherine is she’s so spontaneous and unexpected. You can’t really get into her mind to figure out what she’s up to, because if she doesn’t want you to know, you’re not going to find out. She does everything for her own amusement and own entertainment. Screwing with people and messing with their minds and playing with them is the most fun for someone who’s been on the earth for however many hundred years. You get bored of the regular grind, so why not come back and visit and ex or two, and a new girlfriend, and stir up the pot?

IGN: You’d gotten to play Katherine before in the flashbacks, but I imagine it still had to be a lot of fun to bring her into the modern scenes and get to do these crazy things — complete with kissing Damon and cutting off John’s fingers and stabbing him — in the finale.

Dobrev: Oh god, when I read that episode last season, I was so shocked. It went from, “oh my god… really…?”, to “Oh my god! Yeah!!” It’s cool, because we all watch the show for constructive criticism and to get a feel for it and we all are fans of our show too, because we like it and we really are very passionate about it. So when I was watching it and I would see Ian and Paul and all the guest stars [who play vampires] come in and get to put the teeth in and be that kind of bad and really sink their teeth into the whole thing, I was really excited to do that part of it. But also, to just play a character who is so unlike myself and such a departure from anything I’ve ever done before, and still get to play Elena.

It’s definitely been a huge challenge, but a welcome challenge. As an actor, everyone wants to constantly have something to look forward to that they’re a little bit afraid of. Because the fear is what you put on yourself, because you want it to be great. And I definitely buckled down and got ready and I’ve been working really, really hard and I think it’s paid off. I think the premiere is going to be shocking and huge and exciting. Just like every other episode ofVampire Diaries, a lot happens. We don’t wait and draw things out. We’re going to get to the point and people are going to love it, hopefully. There’s going to be lots of blood and danger and stunts and cliffhangers. That’s our thing! We’re going to have some cliffhangers after every episode.

IGN: Do you ever get much of a head’s up about what’s to come, or do you usually learn about the next twist when you read the script for the episode you’re about to film?

Dobrev: We discover it as we read the scripts. Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec] are brilliant in that way. Obviously they’re very original and they know how to do all those twists and those turns, but they’re also wary of telling us anything more than we need to know, because we might get it in our heads or over-analyze something. Or we might talk to you and give it away. [Laughs]

They give us enough to work with and then they keep us surprised. It keeps things fresh. I think at the beginning, we were kind of like, “Aw, I want to know more!” But later… I like to be surprised. For example, when we get the scripts, Candice [Accola, who plays Caroline] will call me and she’ll be like, “Oh my god, did you read this next episode?! I can’t believe that this happens.” [If I haven't read the script yet], I’ll usually hang up right away, as soon as I’ve heard the first couple of words, because I don’t want to know what’s going to happen. I want to read it and experience the whole thing and be just surprised as the audience would be watching the episode, because it’s an experience in itself.

IGN: I was thinking how tricky it must have been to play those scenes in the finale as Katherine, because of course you want it to be this great surprise when the audience finds out, and yet I’m guessing you probably also wanted to add some nuances that made it different from simply playing Elena. Was that an interesting line to walk?

Dobrev: Yeah, it was very interesting. We kind of played it a couple of different ways. Marcos Siega, who’s one of the producers and one of the directors, who did the pilot last year and came and directed the final episode – he was there the whole time – we were talking about it and he said, “Well, we don’t want to give it away, but you don’t want it to be one -dimensional and kind of insult the audience. You are a different person.” He kept telling me, “You are a different person and you have to walk differently, talk differently…” Mind you, at the same time, this different person is trying to impersonate someone else! So it was definitely tricky. But I had to put myself in the mind frame of, “I am Katherine and I am Katherine being the best actress she can be and trying to fool everyone.” Trying to be subtle about it, but definitely, there’s a glint in your eye – an underlying evil. There’s a menacing quality and up to no good personality that she possesses, that whether or not she’s trying to be innocent or not, it’s just always going to be there. It’s fun!

I hope I’m making sense! Maybe I’m getting totally heady, but when you start playing two characters like this on a regular basis, it definitely kind of gets to you. [Laughs]

IGN: [Laughs] It makes sense to me! One thing I’m curious about is whether you knew when you got the role that you would eventually be playing two characters. You could certainly presume from seeing her photo in the pilot that there might be some flashbacks, but did you know it would turn into an ongoing thing?

Dobrev: Yes and no. When I first auditioned for the show, I read up on it. I did my research and I knew what the story was and that there were two characters… I always hoped that I’d be able to play both, because it’s a dream come true to play two great characters in one medium, on one show. And they kind of hinted at it, but they didn’t tell me from the get go, no. I just had to put the pieces together.

IGN: How do you like doing the flashbacks? I imagine it must be cool to get the chance to do such a different kind of show than usual.

Dobrev: Oh, the flashbacks are like the cherry on top of the cake. We all really, really enjoy doing them, because the world really transforms. There’s people walking around in period dresses and there are horses on set. I’ve always loved doing period. I’ve done theater and going to another era and period is just so much fun. Getting to act different and walk different… As much as it sounds counterintuitive, being tightened into one of those corsets makes you realize what a lot of people went through back in the day – how they put themselves through that pain and discomfort every day. And I’m curious to know who invented the corset and why, just because it’s a very excruciating process. [Laughs]

IGN: Kevin has said there is another big flashback episode coming up. Can you talk about that at all?

Dobrev: Yes. It is very period heavy. There’s a lot of scenes in that era and you do find out a lot, but it seems that every time we do a flashback, it’s from another character’s perspective. So you learn more about the same time frame from a different perspective and how the events may have been interpreted differently and misconstrued. Everyone has their side of the story. If you have a fight with your girlfriend, one party will have a different side than the other. So it’s just interesting to see what we learn and how things were kind of twisted and turned, based on whose side of the story we see it from. And why the events occurred the way they did, because of what intentions people had.

IGN: Damon is a fascinating character, but at the end of the day, he did try to kill Bonnie and turned Vicki into a vampire, along with other pretty heinous acts Elena is aware of. Do you think she could ever be with him? What do you think her take is on him?

Dobrev: I think that every person, whether it be Damon or Stefan or Bonnie or Elena or Katherine even, does what they do because they have their own reasons and they can justify them in their own mind. So when Damon says or does something bad, it’s because he wants something. Elena, throughout the first season, hated him for it, then started to understand and learn all the reasons he did what he did and that it was for his love of Katherine. He ultimately, just like anybody else, just wants to be loved and wants to be accepted and happy, at the end of the day.

It’s going to be interesting to see their relationship. For Damon to even think that Elena would kiss him, that means that they must have had some sort of chemistry and maybe he’s mistaking friendship for something more, because not many people give him friendship or understand him. But whether or not those feelings are reciprocated through Elena is going to be a whole other story. Because for the last 22 episodes, for the last year, that she’s been involved with these two boys, she’s fallen further and further and more deeply in love with Stefan. So it’s going to be interesting to see now, when Katherine comes back into the mix, how that stirs up the pot and what happens.

IGN: This show very quickly made an impact with fans and I know you’ve had a lot of firsthand encounters with fans and seen how passionate they are. What’s that been like?

Dobrev: It’s really cool. It’s what everybody kind of aspires to and wants. You want people to enjoy your work and appreciate it. So it’s been really flattering that people respond to our show and are dedicated to the show. We’ve done numerous press tours and autograph signings and everyone is just so enthusiastic and excited and it just makes us feel even better about the work that we do and gives us a renewed excitement about going in and kicking ass and making it that much better and keeping them.

But they’re very, very passionate. The age group that we mainly target, which is the young adults, they are probably the most vocal about their enthusiasm.

IGN: Do you do your best to stay neutral when they express certain opinions, say on the love triangle dynamic?

Dobrev: Oh yeah. Because it’s definitely 50/50, so whatever I say, I’ll piss off some people. [Laughs] Sometimes people take it to heart and they forget that it is a TV show at the end of the day. They come up to me and they ask me, “Why did you do this? And why did Stefan and Elena have this argument?!” It’s really funny. They ask me as though I actually am the person involved with these people.

IGN: Now they’ll ask you as if you’re Katherine too.

Dobrev: Yeah. Actually, it was the cutest thing in the world. During the finale, we were shooting it in Covington and there’s the Founder’s Day float, where Elena puts on a big dress and kind of looks like Katherine. And so we were walking through the square and there was this little girl and she couldn’t have been more than 10 years old. Her mom was like, “Hey, look sweetie! There she is! There’s Elena!” And the girl looks up at me and she’s like, “No! No, Mommy!! No, that’s Katherine! No!” And she started almost crying. She was scared of me, because she thought I was Katherine. It was so cute. She didn’t want to come say hi! She was saying hi to Ian and Paul and everyone was signing autographs for the people that were watching, and she said, “No! No, I don’t want to talk to her! She’s scaring me!”

The Vampire Diaries: Season 2 premieres Thursday, September 9th at 8:00pm ET/PT on The CW. (USA)

Melinda on whether we’ll see Kelly again: “It would be great to go visit Mystic Falls.”

There’s still a lot to explore with your character, Kelly Donovan.

Yes, it would just be a matter of the network and producers and writers working that out. They’re two totally, absolutely different characters, which is great, but it would be kind of up to the network to decide if they wanted to see my face two hours in a row. Although, right now, Amanda is definitely a supporting character. She’s kind of mysterious and enigmatic, you don’t really know much about her and I don’t think there will be very much revealed in the beginning. But yeah, I talked to Kevin Williamson, I talked to Peter Roth, the head of Warner Brothers … but, yes, in a perfect world it would be great to go visit Mystic Falls and just ruin Matt’s life even more.

The Vampire Diaries Star Katerina Graham on Sparks With Damon and Being Team Stefan

Just in time for The Vampire Diaries’ second season premiere, I chatted with Katerina Graham, who plays Bonnie on the series. She spilled the beans on whom she thinks Elena should be with and a possible love connection between Bonnie and a certain sexy vampire (though she played it very, very coy). Graham dished on the new werewolves, and also revealed her fever for a young man named Justin Bieber.

BuzzSugar: What are you most excited about in the upcoming season?
Katerina Graham: I’m really excited about the season premiere, honestly. There have been so many episodes shot after that — we’re on episode six — but I’m really dying to see the season premiere, I’m just dying!

Buzz: Has it been weird acting with Nina Dobrev as Katherine and Elena now?
KG: No! Nina’s always great to do scenes with, and just because she’s a new character she’s still very much Nina Dobrev, still very much that person to work with. She’s handling Katherine really really well.

Buzz: I’ve noticed some sexual tension between Damon and Bonnie.
KG: I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Buzz: Is there any possibility of a love connection between them?
KG: I don’t know . . . that’s the answer! Next question, next question!

Buzz: Is there a chance of another love interest for Bonnie then?
KG: I think there’s a chance, but do I know if it’s going to happen? I don’t. [But] hopefully. It would be nice!

Buzz: Are we going to see Bonnie kicking ass this season?
KG: Oh, yeah, from the jump she’s kicking ass. She’s going to try — although she might not succeed sometimes, she’s going to be trying to kick ass. She’s going to be doing her thing.

Buzz: How will the addition of werewolves affect the show?
KG: It completely affects the show, it alters everything that you might have thought the show was gong to be. Werewolves are going to play such an important part this season. I know that notoriously vampires and werewolves don’t get along, so that creates a whole other conflict for everyone to deal with, and then Katherine’s back, that’s a whole other thing. It’s so interesting to see how they’re all playing with each other. And I don’t think any of them are going to play nice.

Buzz: Will Bonnie be discovering more of her powers?
KG: Absolutely. She also discovers things she can do easily and certain things she’s learning and still developing. Over time we’ll discover more of her abilities, which is always fun for the fans to see.

Buzz: Will we see Bonnie happy again?
KG: Yeah! She’s trying. I think if you lose anyone you’re going to be bummed out, and that’s OK. She’s a bit edgier this year, definitely, but she’s still got the sense of humor and I always like to find the fun in the scenes.

Buzz: Is she always going to hate Stefan, and vampires in general?
KG: I don’t know if she’s always going to hate anyone, but I definitely feel that she’ll never let certain things go. She’ll never let the things that Damon’s done go, and she’ll never let the things that Stefan’s done go. She can maybe forgive them, but Bonnie doesn’t forget anything.

Buzz: So spill, are you Team Damon or Team Stefan?
KG: I would love to see Elena with Stefan because he really loves her. [It's a] no boundaries kind of love, and I believe in that and I believe in being with the people that are like that. I think that Damon hasn’t quite gotten over his ex yet. But we’ll see; plotlines can change and I can think that by the end of the season, I could think that Stefan hasn’t earned Elena. Damon hasn’t earned Elena. I think he’s got a lot to get over, especially the things that he’s done to Jeremy and the things he’s done to the family, and the things that he’s done to me. We’ll see. He could turn out to really prove himself. I think everyone deserves another chance.

Buzz: You were recently in Justin Bieber’s “Somebody to Love” video. Do you have Bieber fever?
KG: I totally have Bieber fever! Everyone around me has Bieber fever! We looove Justin Bieber. Everyone in my music camp is big supporters of him, and vice versa. He’s been very supportive of me and my music.

Buzz: Does Bieber watch The Vampire Diaries?
KG: He’s very aware of it! I don’t know how much time he has to watch TV, but he’s aware of it. I think he would make a great vampire.

Buzz: It would be awesome if you could get him to guest star.
KG: I know, fingers crossed!

The TV Chick talks to Ian about second season

The Vampire Diaries is back on TV tomorrow night! The second season is picking up where it left off — a mysterious Katherine reappearance, Tyler Lockwood dealing with his new, scary self and his dad’s death and is Jeremy a vampire? Is he dead? So many questions which will all be answered tomorrow night! I can tell you this: there is no way you will be disappointed by the season premiere. I adored this show last season as it continued to get better and better while delving deeper into the mythology in Mystic Falls and the residents who cause trouble (human or vampire). I recently had the chance to catch up with the cast and producers at Comic Con. Ian Somerhalder talked about the upcoming season, his teetering humanity that we saw come out last season and how his motivations have changed since the first episode.

What excites you the most about this new season?
The challenges that await. It’s not going to necessarily be the funnest season for Damon. I think he’s going to be challenged a lot where I don’t think he was used to being challenged. There’s some things that wreak more havoc in Mystic Falls than he probably did in season one, and it’s going to be a problem. So those challenges are something to look forward to, because it’s not boring.

Are we going to keep seeing the humanity come out in Damon or is he going to go back to the way he was in the beginning of the season?
Well, I think when he finds out that it wasn’t Elena, I think he’s going to be a little pissed off. [But] probably yeah. I think that’s the only time you ever see it, is when he’s with [Elena]. Nina Dobrev will do that to you. There’s no two ways about it.

Do you think Damon’s motivations have changed since the start of the show?
Oh wow. Well, I don’t know. He still wants Katherine, like an idiot. You know, it’s weird. Love is a really blinding force. It forces us to do things — stupid things — every single one of us has experienced it.

Is he going to develop feelings for Elena or continue to try to get Katherine back?
I don’t know. Actually, to be honest with you, I don’t know.

What would you like to see happen?
I’d like to see him deal with — what I’d like to see is for him to realize she is a crazy, manipulative bitch and really a lot of where he comes from, his traits, he learned from her, and if he were able to look inward, at himself, and say “These are not very high quality traits of a person.”

What about when he finds out that Katherine came back for Stefan…
That’s another thing that’s just going to crush him.

How is his relationship with Stefan going to change because they sort of formed a tentative alliance?
A tentative alliance — well that’s the thing, I think that’s the interesting thought. That alliance may have to get stronger, because she’s going to reek havoc for both of them. Whether Katherine wants Stefan or Damon — Stefan wants nothing to do with her, for the most part.

The Vampire Diaries season one is now out on DVD and Blu-Ray. The second season premiere is tomorrow at 9 pm on the CW. Be sure to tune in!

has been good to Ian Somerhalder: It earned him a spot on Entertainment Weekly’s 2009 list of TV’s Best Bitches and the title of Sexiest Beast in this summer’s popular EW.com bracket game, which saw readers rack up more than 1.5 million votes while whittling the 64-deep field down to his devilishly delicious Damon Salvatore and Twilight‘s saintly sensitive Edward Cullen. Shortly after his victory last month, we caught up with a humbled and grateful Somerhalder, who was already feeling the pressure that comes with the crown…

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Congratulations on Damon being named the ultimate Sexy Beast.
IAN SOMERHALDER:
[Laughs] That is so cool.

What would you like to say to the people who voted for you?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. It makes you realize the dedication of the fans, how much fun they’re having and how much fun they make us have. It’s the fans who are making the success of the show happen. We can’t thank them enough. We’re just doing the acting leg of it. Season 2 is starting [Sept. 9, 8 p.m. ET, The CW], and we’re gonna try not to suck. Wow, that’s a terrible pun. Let me reword that. You finish the first season of the show, and everyone worked their asses off, and the season went really well, and people liked the show. But then season 2 comes up, and you realize, whoa, we have more of a responsibility now. The heat is really on now. We cannot do a bad job. So, we are committed to making this a better year of television than last year. So that’s what I want to tell everyone: “Thank you, and literally, we’ll try not to suck.” [Laughs]

We know from promos that Katherine [Nina Dobrev as the vampire lover who essentially turned the brothers in 1864] says she’s returned for Stefan and never loved Damon. What can you tease about season 2?
Poor Damon. Katherine comes back, and it’s the chicken or the egg thing. In the story, Katherine obviously came before Damon, and Damon learned a lot of his antics from Katherine and then 150 years of cynicism. When I watch Nina be Katherine, it’s crazy, the similarity that you see between Katherine and Damon. She starts wreaking havoc in a very similar way that for most of season 1 Damon wreaked havoc — because he wanted something. You’re gonna see Damon in a way in which you haven’t necessarily seen him before dealing with Katherine and what happens after so many years of longing and wanting to be with someone, being hurt and let down in that extreme manner. It’s a lot of fun watching Katherine and how powerful and manipulative and sexy and crazy she is. It’s a lot of fun to play. It’s brutal for me. [In classic Damon delivery] Damon doesn’t always get what he wants now, which is boring for Ian, but great for the story.

After the show premiered last fall, you told us that you used to be jealous of Josh Holloway for the things he got to say and do as Sawyer on Lost. Now Damon is that character. What do you think it is about him that draws fans in?
I only know what I love about him: Though he may be doing things that are off our moral compass, Damon loves what he’s doing, and he’s enjoying the hell out of his life, even despite the amount of pain and anger that he has inside of him. A lot of the world has a lot of pain and anger, and it’s fun to watch someone who’s learned how to take their pain and make it fun. [Exec producers] Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec] have assembled a phenomenal writing team. When I watch the episodes, I don’t see Damon as me, because Damon is such a specific, strong character. It has nothing to do with me. It’s the way it’s written down on the page.

I recently spoke with Kevin and Julie for EW’s Fall TV preview issue [on stands Sept. 10], and he said something that I wanted to float by you: According to him, it’s a blessing when an actor is asked to be shirtless in a scene on The Vampire Diaries because of the heat in Atlanta. Is that how you look at it?
At this point, why not? Literally. Let me tell you something. I love the South. I’m from the South. I’m a Southern boy. You experience temperatures here that one just doesn’t understand until one is actually geographically here. I am watching our crew members melting like snowmen. It’s insane. When we are in wardrobe and it’s 100 degrees, with 60, 70, 80 percent humidity, you get this heat index and it just sticks to you. So yeah, why not? It is easier just to have your shirt off. I walk around set with it off half the time anyway now, so we might as well shoot it on camera. I’m imagining this isn’t gonna last much longer, but it is summer in Georgia, baby. That’s what you get.

Well, congratulations again, and good luck with season 2. I hope it doesn’t suck. I’m sure it will not.
[Laughs] If it doesn’t suck, I’m sure I’ll talk to you again soon. If it does suck, then I’ll know because you’re not gonna call me back.

Part two of Hollywood Crush interview with Sara Canning

For all the bloodletting, witchcraft and general supernatural nonsense transpiring daily in Mystic Falls, you’d think every citizen in town would be aware of the ooky, spooky goings-on. But there are a few who have yet to be clued in, including Elena’s Aunt Jenna. Even though her niece hobnobs with the undead, her sort-of-boyfriend is a vampire hunter and her brother-in-law was murdered in her kitchen by a deranged bloodsucker, she is, inexplicably, none the wiser. And “Vampire Diaries” actress Sara Canning, who plays Jenna, says it’s a good thing.

“I think one of the most important things about Jenna’s character is that she’s one of the only people left who aren’t in on everything,” she told Hollywood Crush. “There’s so much going on that doesn’t involve solely vampires—it’s just as much about watching relationships develop and crumble, and teenagers dealing with their parents, heartache and betrayal, and the history of the town—the sort of status system. It’s an important aspect that Jenna is holding down the fort in reality. As much as Jeremy and Elena can be swept up in this mystic world that is encompassing their own reality, they can always go home, and Jenna is really there for them.”

Sara isn’t sure when her character will catch on, saying she’ll likely be in the dark for a while still. “I have a feeling that she won’t [know] for at least the first part of this season,” she said, adding, “I think it’s kind of cool that she’s one of the only people left who’s really dealing with her own stuff—dealing with her master’s and raising two teenagers all of a sudden. I think it’s an important aspect of her character at this point.”

Devastating scene between Nina and Ian in tomorrow’s season 2 premiere

scoop, please! — Micah
MICKEY:
We’ll learn pretty quickly how Jeremy and Caroline fare in their stare-downs with the Grim Reaper, but the answers won’t be simple… or permanent. Also: The premiere (Thursday, 8/7c, CW) features a devastating scene between Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder. I’ll leave it up to you to guess which character Dobrev is playing in it.

The Truth Behind…

A few weeks ago The CW released “The Truth Behind…” video interviews with the main cast. We posted YouTube versions of four of them (The Truth Behind Elena, Stefan, Damon and Bonnie) a while ago. Now, thanks to ItsDaveDL, we have YouTube versions of the other five as well! Unfortunately, there’s no The Truth Behind Alaric one. Looks like they were interviewed during “Founder’s Day” filming. No spoilers.

‘Vampire Diaries’ Star Sara Canning On Jenna And Alaric’s Future: ‘He’s Going To Be A Good Dad One Day’

If you ask us, it seems there are two types of “Vampire Diaries” fans: those who want to see Elena (Nina Dobrev) end up in the steady arms of Stefan (Paul Wesley) and those who want to see her fall hard for bad boy Damon (Ian Somerhalder). (To be fair, there’s probably a very, very small contingent rooting for ex Matt, but we’re not going to go there.) No matter where your allegiances lie in the Elena-Stefan-Damon triangle, I think we can all agree on one couple we want to see go the distance: Elena’s Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) and teacher-by-day, vampire-hunter-by-night Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis). So when we spoke with Sara in anticipation of season 2′s premiere (two more days!), we just had to ask about the pair’s future.

Unfortunately, Sara is almost as in the dark about the couple’s destiny as we are, even though they have shot scenes together for the upcoming season. “I think the audience and Matt and I have been waiting to see what is going to happen with them because it’s been so stop and start,” she said. “It’s been really kind of a cool development for Jenna because we see her meeting this new guy and recognizing that he could be really good for her. But she’s given up old habits and she’s not going to chase him down.”

Vague, yes, but Sara has heard a few rumors around set and said it probably won’t be smooth sailing for her and Matt’s characters.

While highs and lows are likely in the forecast for Jenna and Alaric, Sara believes Alaric is a good match for Jenna. “I think Alaric is so different from a lot of the guys she’s dated. He definitely has a bad-boy streak…but he actually really cares about people,” she said. “He’s lost a wife, and Jenna just went through a major loss herself. She’s lost a major part of her family, and now she’s trying to fill that space for Elena and Jeremy. I think she just realizes that he has that life experience. She can look at him and say, he’s going to be a good dad one day. He’s that kind of guy.”

Check back tomorrow for the second part of our interview with Sara in which we talk about how Aunt Jenna manages to never get wind of all the supernatural stuff going on around her.

The TV Chick interviews Paul: “Season 2 is going to be a lot of acceptance for Stefan.”

The Vampire Diaries was one of my favorites from last season, prominently standing out as one of the best new shows in a crowded pack. Last season ended on a huge cliffhanger and this season brings a lot of surprises. There are supernatural beings and twists and turns that I’m not going to spoil for you. However, I can say that everyone is in for a treat because the premiere is absolutely amazing. And if you haven’t watched the first season, seriously, the show is out on DVD, what are you waiting for? At Comic Con, I spoke with the cast and producers of The Vampire Diaries. Paul Wesley talked about playing the darker side of Stefan, what his motivations are for the upcoming season and how is relationship with his super sexy brother Damon is going to change.

In season 2, how does Damon and Stefans’s relationship change?
From my perspective, for me, I’m broken hearted by my brother because as sociopathic and religious as he is, I still love him, and he knows that as well. I think at this point Stefan — he doesn’t empathize as much or care. He’s like “You know what, I’m not going to deal with this guy.”

What do you think Stefan’s motivations are for season 2?
Elena, Elena, Elena, Elena…he loves her. Also, coming to terms with himself — sort of the transformation. Season 2 is going to be a lot of acceptance for Stefan, being like “this is who I am.” He’s going to do other things. Be jovial. I think it will be nice.

What are his feelings for Katherine?
It’s a mix. He thought he was in love with her at one point and she’s the person that is responsible for his immortality. It’s heavy. [He looks at her with] disgust but at the same time a little bit of sort of interest.

Will Elena’s mortality ever be an issue?
I don’t think he’s come to terms with her dying one day.

Do you think she will one day?
Not any time on Vampire Diaries on the CW. It would be quite the triangle if it was just me and Damon stuck staring at each other. [Ed Note: I would really enjoy watching this show, too.]

How would you sum up the new season?
I’ve only really gotten the first two episodes. We just shot the first one and the second one we are just about to start, so I don’t know what’s going to quite happen. But I think a lot of the supporting characters are going to become very important. Obviously, Katherine is a huge part of season 2. And then I think between Damon and Stefan, there’s a bit of going back and forth, a role reversal. A little bit of that, I think it’s necessary.

Will we see Stefan go over to the dark side again?
I would imagine.

Do you like playing that other side of Stefan?
I love it. I love not necessarily the dark side — I mean I love that as well — I like Stefan to have some other tactics other than being victimized and accepting. And I want him to be more proactive.

New outtake of Nina Dobrev for Seventeen

Kevin Williamson talks season 2: “It will be fun.”

Returning for its highly anticipated second season, The Vampire Diaries is the story of two vampire brothers obsessed with the same beautiful girl, and battling to control the fate of an entire town.

During season 1, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) returned to their hometown of Mystic Falls, where they both became enamored with high school student Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev). Season 2 will see the appearance of the villainous Katherine (also played by Nina Dobrev) throwing a wrench into the love triangle between Stefan, Elena and Damon. This time around, the stakes are raised even higher as new and unexpected friendships are forged, allies become enemies and hearts are broken, and Stefan and Damon are forced to face a villain more evil and diabolical than they ever believed possible.

In a recent interview to promote the season 2 premiere, executive producer Kevin Williamson talked about what fans can expect, why Katherine has returned and that the werewolves will play a bigger role in the story.

Question: What’s in store for the fans this coming season?

Kevin: Well, Katherine being back in Mystic Falls is a bit of a game changer for the show. It’s about, “How is that going to affect Damon and Stefan, in terms of Katherine now being back in town?” It’s so hard to talk about it without giving anything away because it seems like everything is a surprise and everything is a twist. But Katherine comes back and pretty much states why she’s back. It will be fun to watch that play out. If you’ve watched our show in the past, you know that there’s always more than one reason why someone is there. It’s a huge journey.

What is Katherine’s reason for being back?

Kevin: She says that she wants Stefan and that she came back for him.

Could she just be saying that?

Kevin: Maybe. Could be.

How is Katherine now different from Katherine in 1864?

Kevin: She’s meaner. Actually, it’s going to be interesting to watch. She’s different, in the sense that she doesn’t have to wear corsets anymore. I’m scared to say because it will tease where she’s been. What she’s been up to is a bit of a secret. This is one of those shows you just can’t talk about. It sucks.

Are you going to have a few flashback episodes, like in season 1?

Kevin: Right now, we have one. We have three flashback episodes planned, and I’m guessing there will be a fourth.

Will there be flashback scenes with any of the characters that departed from the show?

Kevin: Yes.

Will there be a reappearance of Isobel in season 2?

Kevin: Not right away. I don’t have any plans, in the first half on the season. We’ve broken the whole season, but we haven’t individually broken down the back nine episodes. I’d hate to say no and then turn around and do it, so that you can make a liar out of me, but not in the first 12 episodes.

How much will viewers see of the werewolves this season?

Kevin: Tyler (Michael Trevino) is going to learn, through help from his Uncle Mason (Taylor Kinney), who comes to town in the very first episode, who and what he is. He’s going to learn about the curse, who he is and how he responds to it. It’s going to be a typical growing up story and a coming-of-age tale. But it’s horrible to have all these questions about why you’re the way you are, why you’re so angry and why you always feel so lost, and then you get the answer and you don’t like it. It’s going to be a fun journey for him, and it’s going to be violent.

There was a lot of pressure going into season 1, just for the show to succeed. Now that this show is so popular, was there pressure to outdo yourself in season 2?

Kevin: There is a lot of pressure to keep it up. It’s a very hard show to write, I’ve discovered, because there’s so much genre mixed with relationships and characters. I didn’t realize how hard it was going to be. But I do think we’ve found a rhythm to our show, which is some sort of human relationship and a mythology that runs concurrently with it, so yes, we are going to continue to mythology.

We’re going back to zero and telling a new story, but it’s the story that you already know half of because you’ve watched the first season. It’s the other half. We’re just going to continue the story. There’s so much to still know about 1864. What happened? Why wasn’t Katherine in the tomb? How did she escape? Where did she go? Why did she come to Mystic Falls, to begin with? What brought her to Mystic Falls? There’s all those fun questions that we’re going to explore, and how the Lockwood curse figures into it. It will be fun.

Ian and Michael discuss TVD: “The second season is our defining moment.”

In The CW’s hit drama The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder plays Damon Salvatore, the older and far more dangerous of the vampire brothers who share a long and bitter history that is closely connected to their hometown of Mystic Falls. In season 2 of the series, Michael Trevino’s character, the volatile Taylor Lockwood, will be giving bad-boy Damon a run for his money in the villain department, as his more primal werewolf side makes an appearance.

During an interview to promote the new season of their popular show, co-stars Ian Somerhalder and Michael Trevino hinted at what’s coming up for their characters and what fans can look forward to.

Question: Ian, what hints can you give about what’s coming up for Damon in season 2?

Ian: I do know that when Damon finds out that it was not Elena that he kissed, he’s going to blow his top. He’s not going to be very happy about it. Also, by virtue of the fact that there are other supernatural elements coming to town, Damon is going to have to make a decision and figure out whether he can work with Stefan to protect what they love, their way of life and all the things that come with it.

Michael, what can you say about the evolution of your character this season?

Michael: I don’t know much. One big thing is that there’s Uncle Mason. Mason Lockwood is a younger, hipper brother of Mayor Lockwood (Robert Pralgo), Tyler’s dad, and he comes to town. He takes Tyler under his wing and will probably be there for awhile to explain to him why he lashes out all the time and has this rage. He’ll give reasons to that and school him on the Lockwood ancestry from 1864, the werewolf gene, where that came from and why they have it. Somebody will probably turn into a werewolf, at some point. It’s going to be a process. We’re not going to show all our cards right away.

Will Tyler be a villain?

Michael: Yes. Tyler was always a bully and a prick, but now that he has this supernatural ability, he’ll be a villain. Yes, definitely. You can’t just have Damon around, kicking people’s asses and being a punk. If they can write for me as well as they write for Damon, then it will be fun.

Ian, if you could choose, what era would you like to see Damon flashback to?

Ian: I was in the ‘80s, but I was so young. My brother and sister were ‘80s kids. They partied in the ‘80s. I would rather see Damon in the late ‘60s, early ‘70s. I would love to see that, and that’s why we’re so lucky for this show. We can do these flashbacks from the 1860’s, all the way up until now. That’s so many decades, and so many influential political, environmental and cultural issues and booms that were happening.

I always said it would be so awesome, if we got the time and money to do it, to see Damon at a Rolling Stone’s concert, front and center, wearing some bad-ass ‘70s outfit, or even in the exact same thing he wears now because he hasn’t changed since about the ‘50s. How cool would it be to be able to use stock footage of some unbelievable Rolling Stone’s concert, and having Damon sitting there, scoping stuff out with two beautiful women on either side? I just think it would be so amazing to see Damon in that situation.

Michael, do you feel like this is the moment to shine for the werewolf?

Michael: Yeah, that’s why I’m hoping we’re different. With Twilight, their werewolves are big and CG. And then, with True Blood, there’s real wolves. I think we’re going to have real wolves.

Have you always known the origin of your character?

Michael: I did. Before I even auditioned, I read as much of the books as I could and I saw that Tyler ends up turning into a werewolf, way down the line. In season 1, I didn’t know that we weren’t really going to tap into it as much, so it can’t get any worse than that. Season 2 is going to be my season. It’s going to be big for Tyler. So, yeah, I knew all along. I don’t know how they’re going to do it or what we’re going to do, but hopefully it’s better than True Blood or Twilight.

Are you excited?

Michael: Yeah, I’m excited. I really am. But, I’m also nervous. I’ve got to bring it ‘cause they’re going to compare me to that Taylor [Lautner] kid, and if I don’t bring it, I’m just going to get crushed.

Ian, what is Damon like to play, as an actor?

Ian: Damon puts me into some weird places. This is a season to see him scared. He will be. That I promise you.

Are you more nervous for season 2, since there’s so much expectation now for the show?

Ian: Absolutely! We were talking about that at a meeting in Atlanta, during a table read for the second episode. We had a pow wow with the cast and I said, “Look, guys, the second season is our defining moment. We have to promise ourselves, the network, the studio and the fans that this is going to be a better year of storytelling and acting than it was last year.” That’s what we need to do because we can’t let everyone down, and we should try to exceed and make it better.

New promo for Vampire Diaries season 2

BuddyTV’s John gives you 5 reasons to get excited for season 2

If you were at all worried about The Vampire Diaries having a sophomore slump, your fears can go away. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at the season 2 premiere, “The Return,” and it is The Vampire Diaries at its best.

I’m not going to give away any major spoilers, and trust me, there are some big ones coming. Perhaps my favorite part of The Vampire Diaries is that every episode has major, game-changing events, and the season 2 premiere is no exception.

However, to get you excited before the premiere this Thursday at 8pm on the CW, here are five great things to look for.

Damon’s Moment of Realization

At the end of last season Damon kissed Katherine, though he thought he was kissing Elena. In the premiere Damon has a moment where he realizes that he fell victim to “doppelganger hijinks,” and the moment alone is worth the price of admission and proof that Ian Somerhalder is giving the performance of his career on this show.

Nina Dobrev as Katherine

I typically find Elena to be one of the more boring parts of The Vampire Diaries, but now that star Nina Dobrev gets to have some fun by playing Elena and Katherine, we get to see just how great she can be. Much like Somerhalder does with Damon, Dobrev sinks her teeth into the role of Katherine and makes me hope that she’ll be around for a long, long time.

Bad-Ass Bonnie

Towards the end of the first season Bonnie was becoming better and better as she expanded her witch powers, and now she’s definitely a formidable adversary for anyone she comes across, turning the token sidekick into someone not to be messed with.

What Damon Does

I can’t and won’t give away too much, but Damon does something at the end of the season 2 premiere that left me shocked. It’s certainly a great starting point for an interesting season and will have fans debating what he did and didn’t know.

“Game On”

You’ll know exactly what this means when you see the episode, but needless to say, the game is definitely on. These two simple words will have a very lasting effect for the rest of the season and will impact nearly every single character.

Overall, the season 2 premiere captures everything we loved about the first season of The Vampire Diaries. It’s fast-paced, sexy, a little inappropriately funny and truly shocking. Get ready for another amazing season that could be even better than the first.

UK’s ITV2 to broadcast Vampire Diaries season 2 alongside US premiere

ITV, the television company broadcasting Vampire Diaries in UK, made a press release a few days ago, mentioning the show. Hundreds of fans living in UK asked the same question: “When will ITV2 start broadcasting Vampire Diaries season 2?” Well, now they can give you an answer – or sort of.

Hit US dramas, Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl are back for new series, broadcast alongside their US premiere dates.

Also, they replied to a fan on Facebook with the words: “So close to being able to tell you the date when it starts…but I can’t!”. So keep checking their page, maybe they’ll mention something.

Thanks to @tvdfansonline for the heads up on this!

EW’s brief review of Vampire Diaries season 2 premiere

The second-season premiere of The Vampire Diaries proves once again why this series is one of prime time’s more cleverly constructed, well-acted nighttime soap operas. After last season’s finger-chopping cliff-hanger, we get neck snappings, a smothering, an unlikely alliance between two warring brothers, and the line ”Kiss me or kill me!” Oh, and as Ian Somerhalder’s Damon adds, ”Doppelgänger high jinks ensue.”

He’s referring, of course, to Nina Dobrev’s Elena/Katherine, the series’ yin and yang of good and evil, purity and villainy. Dobrev has really risen to the challenge of portraying these two, managing to confuse viewers as to who’s who when Katherine wants to impersonate Elena for some mischief.

This season hauls in Taylor Kinney as Mason, the ”black sheep” brother of the late Mayor Lockwood. Mason has a nice swagger, and it looks like he’ll take up any slack that might have occurred with the death of the Mystic Falls mayor.

But the throbbing red heart of The Vampire Diaries remains the tension between Damon and Paul Wesley’s Stefan, and their mutual attraction to whomever Dobrev is embodying at the time. ”She’s Katherine! She loves to play games!” splutters Damon in the season opener. It’s not long after this that she plays a romantic game with him that will doubtless have reverberations throughout the season. As Katherine says: ”Game on.” B+

Candice Accola on her character, season 2 and more: “The audience is going to be so excited.”

Early in The Vampire Diaries, Caroline was the bitch. There’s no other way to put it. But as the rookie season progressed, something interesting happened with Caroline, who is played by Candice Accola.

Over time, Caroline became a three-dimensional, even sympathetic character. When she behaved in a bitchy way, viewers started to feel sorry for her, rather than despising her.

We have to assume the writers on The Vampire Diaries saw something in Accola that allowed this gradual transformation to occur.

“Well, thank you so much, first and foremost,” said Accola, who is back with all the main cast members for the second season of The Vampire Diaries, beginning Thursday, Sept. 9 on CW and A. “To start the story it had to be pretty simple, but as the season unfolded the layers came out.”

Accola, 23, said she thought back to her own high school days when endeavouring to get inside Caroline’s head.

“Everyone knows girls who are like Caroline was when we met her in the pilot,” Accola said. “But with people like that, it usually is coming from an insecure, defensive place. “You try to belittle someone else to make yourself feel better. Even the nicest of the nice with the biggest hearts, we all have a little bit of that in us. It’s a very human characteristic.”

But Caroline is integral to The Vampire Diaries not only for her emotional humanity, but also for her physical humanity.

“Especially with all the supernatural elements of the show, my interpretation of what the writers did with Caroline was to give the audience someone to relate to in a very human way,” Accola said.

“So I don’t know what the writers initially intended, but it was lovely to go on that journey. And it definitely reminded me of my own experiences as a high schooler, foot in mouth, not knowing who you are and trying to be someone. You know everything that you don’t want, but it’s hard to find what you do want. Even as a young woman in my 20s, there’s a lot of relatability to that.”

Notwithstanding some previous episodic work, the role of Caroline on The Vampire Diaries represents Accola’s first full-time gig on a TV show. While learning a lot about the craft as she goes along, Accola also appreciates that she just happens to be on a show that has achieved the rare combination of good ratings and critical success.

“In season two, there are some awesome plot lines, the audience is going to be so excited,” Accola said. “For Caroline, she’s searching to figure out who she is and where she fits, in this town and in everyone’s life. And there are some obstacles thrown in front of her.

“What’s funny about this show is, everyone was either quick to jump on board or quick to write it off, because it fed into the pop-culture phenomenon that is vampires right now. But it’s not just about vampires. I’ve been stopped more by adults than by younger peers or teens.”

Maiara Walsh – newest “Vampire Diaries” cast member

Seeing what Maiara tweeted a few days ago, we suspected the same. Speaking of Twitter, that’s the official account of Ms. Walsh, so follow her! Now back to her character. TV Guide’s Keck confirmed our suspicions today. Here’s what Kev Williamson had to say about “Sarah”:

Vampire Diaries executive producer Kevin Williamson tells me, “Sarah is a girl who sets her eyes on Jeremy and encourages him to party it up at the Lockwood house.” (And by Lockwood house, we’re now talking Werewolf Central.)

Sherwood Park News interviews Sara: “We’re all really excited to come back this season.”

Sherwood Park’s got its very own blood sucker, and she’s getting stronger by the day.

Well, OK, she’s not a vampire, but Sara Canning, a Sherwood Park native, is about to start taping the second season of Vampire Diaries, which airs on the CTV in Canada and the CW Network in the United States.

Canning plays Jenna Sommers in the TV show, an aunt and caregiver of Elena and drug user Jeremy, who go and live with her after their parents died in a car accident.

But in a world filled with vampires, witches, and other potentially supernatural beings, alluded to throughout the first season, Canning believes that her character will continue to stay oblivious to the fact that she is surrounded by blood-thirsty creatures.

“I’m often asked when will Jenna find out that there are vampires where they’re living, or that vampires exist, and I actually don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon,” Canning said. “I think one of the most important aspects of Jenna’s character is that she’s one of the few that are left in Mystic Falls (Virginia) that are actually left completely grounded in reality.”

However, Canning did say that this season characters who had not been explored as much in the past will be exposed in much more detail, which is exciting for her.

More than anything though, Canning believes that the entire cast is ready for season two, and that they have proven their place in television.

“I think, as a cast, we’re all really excited to come back this season,” she said. “A second season is quite different from a first, because now we’ve sort of cemented ourselves into the network, and I think people have developed expectations of the show.”

It seems that those expectations are being met, as the Vampire Diaries managed to pull in seven of the eight Teen Choice Awards that the show was nominated for.

Among the surfboard awards were best breakout show, and best fantasy/sci-fi show.

“That was a just … wow,” Canning said. “That was just such an honour and so cool to see where the show came from, last year when we won that (one) People’s Choice award, to it really being kind of a staple now.”

Canning knows though that the awards wouldn’t have been won if they hadn’t managed to build up a following in the first season.

“It’s exciting to know that the show has such a large audience and that people are watching it,” Canning said. “It’s exciting, it’s really cool, and we’re really grateful.”

Canning has also managed to extend her reach past the world of the supernatural, and recently had a major role in Black Field, a Canadian film.

The movie, shot in Manitoba, is a historical drama surrounding two sisters in a love triangle, and the man who interferes with their relationship. Canning plays Maggie, one of the sisters.

“I’m really sort of most proud of Black Field,” Canning said. “It was such an exciting experience as an actress.”

Canning said that the low-budget film held every obstacle from extreme weather condition to animals used on set.

“For the cast and crew alike, it was a very grueling process, but it was so fun,” Canning said. “It was creativity at its most primal form.”

Canning, who used to live in Vancouver where she worked at a restaurant and would do her best to take off months at a time to film, feels that between the TV series and movie, her work is finally being appreciated.

“For the first time I think, now working on Vampire Diaries, and Black Field is getting great recognition in Canada, this is the first time I’ve really been recognized for my work,” Canning said.

“In Canada, unless you’re working on a really large-scale film or TV show, so many brilliant Canadian actors work all the time and kind of fly under the radar.”

Now living in Atlanta where the show is filmed, Canning still leads a fairly normal life, although she does get recognized from the show now and then, and enjoys the experience every time.

“It always catches me off-guard, but everybody who says hello, not knowing me personally and just recognizing me from the show, has been so wonderful,” she said. “Especially here in Atlanta when people do recognize us. For me personally, they always say how happy they are to have us shooting here, and that they’re fans of the show, that they love it, and that we’re really welcome here. It’s a really nice thing.”

She did say that it’s rare that she gets noticed, possibly because her character looks so different than she does.

“I look very different on the show than I do in my everyday life because I play someone who’s quite a few years older than I actually am,” Canning said.

“Sometimes when people do recognize me, they say ‘You look really young,’ and I’m like ‘Oh, you know, that’s what comes from hair, makeup and wardrobe I guess.’”

Canning is currently staying in Atlanta and focusing solely on filming Vampire Diaries for the second season, but plans on moving in other directions once taping is over.

“I love indie films. I would love to do another independent in Canada,” Canning said.

“I would love to do a really quirky comedy, too.”

Canning added that her style of comedy is comparable to shows like 30 Rock, Modern Family, and The Office, and that she really enjoys working on period pieces too, like the role she played in Black Field.

Not only is she looking to take her acting to other levels, but Canning wants to get involved in all aspects of the entertainment business.

“I’m completely interested in all other aspects of the industry,” she said. “As a story teller, I would love to be able to direct, or watch something that I’ve written.”

Canning is currently writing a film with another Sherwood Park native, which she calls “a collision of a few different genres,” combining a Western time period with a love story, and introducing a bit of fantasy throughout the story.

“We’re stepping outside of the norm a bit,” she said.

Season two of Vampire Diaries will premiere Sept. 9.(USA)

Nina Dobrev on playing Elena and Katherine both

4. A

I’m also being tragic and running away from bad things.”

Vampire Diaries’ Newest Character Is All About “Conflict” – and Maybe Sexytime, Too

Courtney Ford
isn’t afraid of blood.

Ford spilled plenty of the red stuff this past season on Dexter as the Trinity Killer’s murderous daughter, now she’s joining the bloodsuckers on The Vampire Diaries as a vampire scholar.

Here’s what Courtney dished to us at Showtime’s Emmy nominee reception about her hot new TVD character, including the true nature of her “research” into the vampires of Fell’s Church. (Hint: Her character might have more on her mind than just books!)

“I play Vanessa Monroe, a Duke University grad student who’s helping Alaric (Matt Davis), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) with Isobel’s research. It’s a really nice arc.”

Isobel, Elena’s birth mom and Alaric’s wife, was so obsessed with vampires that she persuaded Damon to turn her into one. Is Vanessa going to ask the same favor of the sexy Salvatore brother?

Not a chance, Courtney dished. “Vanessa has a conflict, because she studies all this wonderful mythology and folklore, but half of her is a complete skeptic. Half of her is a believer, and half of her is a skeptic, and she goes back and forth. It’s a big conflict for her.”

When we asked Courtney whether Vanessa would see any action in the romance department, her reaction revealed that she’s obviously hooking up with someone… but Courtney’s lips are sealed: “I want to tell you so much, but I can’t!” she said, laughing. We’re starting to believe show runner Kevin Williamson really does put the fear of death in his castmembers.

Courtney was escorted to Showtime’s pre-Emmys bash by her gorgeous husband, Brandon Routh, so we asked him whether he’d be returning to Chuck this season as Special Agent Daniel Shaw. “Not as far as I know,” he said, “but I’d love to come back!”
