Part 2 & 3 of Hollywood Crush’s Ian interview: Thoughts on Vampire Diaries musical episode, more on Damon and Elena’s relationship

So what would be Damon’s go-to musical number?

“I don’t know… Damon would be more like the barber of Fleet Street [a la "Sweeney Todd"]. He would be the guy who sings as he cuts people’s arms off,” he said matter-of-factly—which made us laugh out loud. “Full, Johnny Depp style.”

“Look, here’s the thing, I don’t know how he’s going to get back into her good graces. He killed her brother, there is no better way to tell someone you love them then to snap their brother’s neck. Most people do flowers,” Ian told MTV News recently. “I’ve heard [fans want] that and even in talking to Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec]… How? That’s the question: How in the hell is he going to get back in her good graces? How is she ever going to trust him again? How is she ever even going to want to look at him again?”

Ian Somerhalder Inteviews with PopWrap and MTV

Here are a couple of in depth interviews with Ian Somerhalder, first from PopWrap and then with MTV. Lots of goodies in both, so be sure and head on over to each site to read the rest!

Via PopWrap:

PW: Last week we watched Caroline get turned — what was your reaction to that plot twist?
Ian: We lost Vicki last year and losing Kayla [Ewell] was brutal. Anyone who turns into a vampire ends up dying – quickly. So it gave us pause because Candice [Accola] is such a phenomenally talented actress and Caroline is such a great, witty, smart character that losing her was the last thing we wanted. But now she’s a hot, witty strong vampire. Plus, I’ve been playing this vampire for 18 months, Damon’s been one for over 100 years, so I forget that there are subtleties to playing a vampire that I’ve known for a while. It’s cool to watch someone start to figure it out.

PW: Does Damon come around on his desire to kill her?
Ian: He wants her dead. That’s what makes sense to him – but Caroline starts to prove herself to Damon. The reality is, there are some major problems with a couple of the elements coming to town and Damon & Stefan are going to need all the help they can get. They’ll be forced to put some of their differences aside to protect what they love.

PW: Which is?
Ian: Which is Mystic Falls and Elena. The reality is, they’ve had every opportunity kill one another 100 times over. And now that Katherine’s back, she could take either one of them out with one arm tied behind her back and one eye closed. And they know that. And that’s a big problem. Then you’ve got Mason Lockwood coming into play – the brothers are facing some big problems. They’re Bear Stearns a couple years ago.

Via MTV:

“The dynamics in which this guy lives by are so skewed,” Somerhalder told MTV News recently. “But at the end of the day, and it sounds so cliché, but at the end of the day, he does everything — like all of us do — for love. In some fashion or another, that is why he does what he does. He may go about it in very unconventional, unorthodox, unethical ways, but he does them nonetheless, and he believes in what he’s doing and he has a blast at what he’s doing.”

Somerhalder said one thing that has tripped him up a bit this season is playing out the changes in Damon’s sensitivity. “There’s been this turn, and it’s tough,” Somerhalder said. “It’s not easy to play. This softer side of Damon is really difficult for me to find. It’s very counterintuitive.”

The Washing Post and PopWrap interview Ian Somerhalder

The Washing Post chatted with Ian at their Energy Panel. Check out the article below and head over to their site in order to watch the video. Thanks to Vampire Diaries Online for the heads up!

I spent a few minutes with Somerhalder this morning, discussing how he has galvanized his many  Twitter followers, whether he would ever consider seeking political office, his status as America’s sexiest beast (according to Entertainment Weekly readers) and — in honor of yesterday’s sixth anniversary of the crash of Oceanic 815 — how he felt about the “Lost” finale.

The actor also talked to PopWrap about Damon’s relationships with his brother, Elena, Katherine and more, Vampire Diaries, etc. An excerpt can be found below. Read the entire interview at New York Post.

PW: What would you say is your favorite upcoming episode?
Ian: The flashback episode is big – a lot of flashbacks. The cool thing was, even for me as an audience member, a lot is revealed. Exactly what happened in that tomb. And Katherine is the one that explains it and you see it visually in the 1860’s. It’s confusing, powerful and cool. It’s compelling, dynamic and full of s*** we’ve always wanted to know. Which is always fun to see.

Ian Somerhalder talks to Fancast, LA Times interview with Candice

What happens in this week’s episode?

They realize in this episode very quickly that this whole wolf thing is a major problem.  It’s great for the producers of the show because bringing in a really powerful supernatural element  that can kill vampires, we better show up to work on time.  I’ve been a vampire for the past 18 months and Damon’s been a vampire for 150 years. There are a lot of things that I just instinctively know.  To watch [Caroline] figuring out all these quirks and abilities that you gain by virtue of being a vampire is quite interesting. Damon tried to kill Caroline (Candice Accola) because he knew it was the right thing to do.  He needs to mend his issues with Elena.  I don’t know how that’s going to happen.  He killed her brother. What better way to say I love you than to kill someone’s sibling?

The rest of the interview – at Fancast.

How is Caroline’s transformation going to affect her friendship with Bonnie [Katerina Graham]?

I would assume greatly. … Sometimes there are friendships where there needs to be some space apart. I think that that’s kind of a point for Bonnie and Caroline. They both need to figure out how they feel about that situation. Also, looking back on the first season, Caroline wasn’t necessarily so supportive when Bonnie was finding out about her own changes and her own supernatural qualities. … It’s a lot for Caroline to expect Bonnie to have that immediate just being OK with everything because Caroline didn’t give her that support.

New Vampire Diaries spoilers from Ausiello and Kristin

Question: I think you’ve been a little stingy with The Vampire Diaries scoop. How about some enlightenment? —Robin
Ausiello:
How about some casting scoop? She Spies alum (and season 7 American Idol almost-finalist) Natashia Williams has landed the role of Lucy, a mysterious hipster who possesses a fun swagger. How’s that for a vague spoiler? – Ask Ausiello

Liam in Smithtown, N.Y.: What’s coming up for Bonnie on The Vampire Diaries? Will she continue to feel guilty after forcing Damon to give Caroline his blood?
Definitely…but only to a point. Katerina Graham recently told us: “This is somebody who you love and you’re putting pressure on other people to help you out to protect someone else. There’s guilt with the whole process.” However, Mystic Falls’ resident witch still feels the vampires are ultimately to blame…for everything that’s ever happened in the entire world. Or something like that. “It’s still their fault that this happened in the first place. At the end of the day, if the vampires didn’t come to town, this wouldn’t be a problem.” We think Damon said it best: “Witches, judgy little things.” – Watch With Kristin

Starry Mag talks to Taylor Kinney: “It’s [Vampire Diaries] the best thing on TV right now!”

Q) What has been the most challenging part of playing Mason?

A) It’s just coming on board and getting acclimated. I’d say that’s the biggest challenge in any endeavor, being the new kid. The relationships that Mason has with the people in the town are all new, for the most part. Even if I know who people are or they know who I am, I’ve been out of town so long that those relationships don’t just kick right off. That’s the toughest part, just integrating yourself into a new area, place of work, town, school or whatever it is. It’s trying to be a part of that and get whatever you want out of it. I think people can empathize with that. It happens in life all the time.

Taylor Kinney talks Uncle Mason with Zap2it

Uncle Mason seems to be pretty mellow initially, especially compared to Tyler, but anger is kind of a Lockwood family tradition. Are we going to see Mason show his temper any time soon?

Of course. Mason grew up in Mystic Falls, but he left probably before college, before adulthood, and he’s come of age now. He’s learned to harness his rage and to deal with problems in a more amicable way than lashing out the way that Tyler is right now. He comes back to Mystic Falls because of the death of his brother, but he stays because he empathizes with where Tyler is right now. He recognizes himself in Tyler and he knows the curse that’s in their bloodline. He’s going to try to help Tyler keep from being so on edge all the time.

Julie and Kevin preview tonight’s The Return (featuring new scenes)

The TV Chick talks to Vampire Diaries producers: “It’s a huge journey.”

The Vampire Diaries returns tonight! The sizzling, action-packed, full of crazy twists second season premiere will leave you gasping at your television. Or at the very least, it left me doing that. I could not be happier that this show is back. I love being transported week after week into the mysterious Mystic Falls, and let’s be honest, the Salvatore Brothers are quite eye-pleasing. I recently had the chance to catch up with the cast and producers of the show. Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, the absolutely brilliant (and super sweet) Executive Producers had a lot to say about the upcoming season, werewolves and flashback episodes.

What can we expect in Mystic Falls in the upcoming season?

Kevin Williamson: Katherine being back in Mystic Falls is a bit of a game changer for the show. How is this going to affect Damon and Stefan in terms of Katherine now being back in town? And it’s so hard to talk about it without giving anything away. Everything’s a surprise. She comes back and pretty much stated why she was back. It will be fun to sort of watch that play out. If you watched our show in the past, you know there’s always more than one reason someone’s there and some of the motives of our characters. It’s a huge journey.

Are there any supernatural elements to Mystic Falls?

Julie Plec: Ultimately, that notion is what got Kevin and me to want to do the series in the first place. Because in the books, I think it was a huge civil war battle that shed a lot of blood and because of all the blood that had been shed from the soldiers, it’s just sort of a heightened hot bed of activity, and when we read that, we thought this is a show that can be more than just these characters and just these creatures because this town for whatever reason draws that kind of element in. And the deeper the series gets, hopefully we’ll be able to hold on for as long as possible, but the deeper the series gets, the more we’ll start to get a sense of what other elements might be either long gestating in this town or coming to town because it’s got a strong supernatural pull.

Last year, you were trying to establish the show. Now that you have, do you feel more pressure to add extra elements?

KW: To try and top ourselves? You know there is a lot of pressure to keep it up. It’s a very hard show to write at this moment, because there’s so much genre mixed with relationships and characters. I didn’t even realize how hard it was going to be. But I do think we kind of found our rhythm to our show which is [about] the human relationship and the mythology. And so yes, we are going to continue the mythology. We’re sort of starting back to zero and telling a new story, but it’s a story that you already know half of it because you watched the first season, so it’s sort of the other half. We’re just going to continue the story. There’s so much you still don’t know about 1864. What happened? Why wasn’t Katherine in the tomb? How did she escape? Where did she go? Why did she come to Mystic Falls to begin with? What was in Mystic Falls? So there’s all these fun questions that we’re going to explore and how the Lockwood curse factors into it.

What’s going to happen with the werewolves?

KW: Tyler’s going to sort of learn with the help of his Uncle Mason who comes to town in the very first episode who and what he is. He’s going to learn about the curse, who and what he is, and how he responds to it. It’s going to be a typical growing up story — a sort of coming of age story, but it’s horrible to have all these questions about why you’re the way you are, why you’re so angry and why you always feel so lost. And then you get the answer, and you don’t like it. So it’s going to be a fun journey for him and violent.

JP: It’s a blood line. A lot of our show has to do with bloodlines and who’s descended from who and what and where and family and what your family gives you and how you become what you are and the werewolf curse is in keeping with that.

How is Katherine now different from Katherine in 1864?

KW: It’s going to be interesting to watch. I’m scared to say because it will give away where she’s been. It’s a bit of a secret what she’s been up to. It’s one of the shows you can’t talk about, it sucks.

Will we get any flashbacks with characters that have unfortunately departed in the first season?

KW: Yes.

Will we see any flashback episodes?

KW: Right now, we have three flashback episodes planned and I’m guessing there will be a fourth.

Will we see Isobel reappear in season 2?

KW: Not right away. I don’t have any plans in the first — we’ve sort of broken the whole season, but we haven’t individually broken down the back nine episodes. So you know, I hate to say no and we turn around and do it, and make a liar out of me. So I would just say, I’m not sure. Not in the first half.

Poor Aunt Jenna, she went to bed that night with a possible undead nephew upstairs and her now dead brother downstairs. What’s her journey going to be like this season?

JP: Jenna is going to remain blissfully in the dark, actually. We’ll learn in the first episode that she was actually out talking to the Fire Marshall when all this went down. So she was not at least sleeping through the tornado of Katherine. Katherine sort of said “Oh you need to go downtown and talk to the Fire Marshall.” So we’ll learn that Katherine actually lured Aunt Jenna out of the house before all the craziness happened. One of the most important things in the series is in our opinion is to keep some of our characters and some of the people that live in our world in the dark, as infuriating as it can be, or as silly as it can get, it’s actually very human. It keeps the character very human. So characters like Matt and Jenna for now are going to be those characters that are just sort of like “Hey, that was weird!”

Is that going to complicate things with her and Alaric?

JP: That’s the big problem in their relationship. No matter how strongly Alaric is drawn towards Jenna, there does come a certain point when you say “Wait a second, I’m into something here.” when everything is built on a lie, or an absence of the truth. And so that’s going to be a big source of conflict for his own character as well.

What are we going to see from Bonnie and Tyler who are taking on bigger roles this season?

JP: We’re going to see Tyler — I know Kev touched on it — Tyler is — I heard what he said and it’s so good I’m going to repeat it — Tyler’s spent all this time asking questions “Why am I the way I am?” and very early in the season he’s going to learn the answer to that. And the struggle upon learning the answer to that — that he’s a recipient of this curse — the period of time between learning that and the curse itself being triggered is going to be a really dark, interesting time for him because of everything that comes along with it. There’s a little bit of wish fulfillment there. There’s a little bit of “Hey maybe I could be this, and maybe it wouldn’t be that bad but what is it involve and what would I become?” and there’s some great, great, great stuff for his character. And Bonnie of course is stronger than ever. Bonnie is kicking ass and taking names. And Bonnie’s going to be confronted with a lot of those issues of “You people are my friends, but I fundamentally have an issue with who you are, so how do I balance that, how do I balance my friendship with you with flat out distaste for vampires and what they’ve done to me and a long line of witches and all that.”

The Vampire Diaries season 2 premieres tonight at 8 pm on the CW. Do not miss it!(USA)

TV Fanatic interviews with Sara Canning and Katerina Graham

What can we look forward to this season?

Without being allowed to say much, some of the major points that have been established are Katherine returning and how that’s going to affect the brothers and the entire town. Jenna has let Katherine into the house and it’s going to create a lot of tension with her and Elena because Katherine has become this puppet master and you never know who is who. Jenna is one of the only characters left who doesn’t know about the supernatural beings in Mystic Falls. For her, it will really test her as a parental figure and as friend to have Katherine messing with everyone and misleading Jenna. There are other major secrets that are being revealed.

Read the entire Sara interview over at TV Fanatic.

Does season two push the bar even more than the first season?
Just the first episode alone raises the bar. It’s very, very rare in TV for the second season of any show to overtake the first one. But the first episode back just… I read it and I was shocked. This is my job, and I shouldn’t be shocked [laughs]. I read it just like a fan. When I get a new script I sit down and I can’t stop reading. It’s not a script to me, it’s an amazing story and I have to know what happens next…

People need to film themselves watching the Vampire Diaries first episode, and seeing their reactions. I would like nothing more than to see the fans YouTube their reactions and then talking about it. I’m dying to know what they think. Fans, Tweet me the link to your YouTube reaction!

Ian Somerhalder Talks Bromance, Romance & Season 2 of ‘The Vampire Diaries’

‘The Vampire Diaries’ could easily have been written off as just another CW teen show, but the sexiness of the cast instantly took it to extremely watchable status. Alongside Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley, star Ian Somerhalder is responsible for a third of that sex appeal … at least.

After a first season of some high highs (tricking his way into his brother’s relationship with Elena) and very low lows (getting duped by the vampire who turned him), Somerhalder’s bad boy bloodsucker Damon Salvatore is in a very dark place in Season 2.

I caught up with Somerhalder to hear all about playing vulnerable, which of his castmates he has a blast shooting with, who Damon might find “useful” this season and the pretty racy scene fans have been waiting for.

Bonus: He talks around it a bit, but I got him to choose whether Damon is on Team Katherine or Team Elena. Whose side are you on?

It was quite a finale for Damon last season … we’ve never seen him like that!
[Laughs] Yeah, he is being humbled. It’s interesting, the ups and downs, art imitating life, which is kind of fun to watch, but there are a couple dynamics that are going to start to change. At the beginning of Season 1, Damon’s sort of this almighty, powerful, sadistic, kind of funny individual … and then he just gets leveled. [Laughs] Over and over and over again.

Well on one hand it was nice to see Damon vulnerable, because it proved he still has a hint of humanity, but on the other hand, he can’t stay like that for long, can he?
No, I hope not. You know, Season 2, you start to understand that there are certain elements that’ve come to town that sort of force Damon to shift his focus quite a bit and actually ask himself what’s important to him. I think throughout this first year, he’s forged these relationships. He initially came to town … like Damon said in the finale, “I came here wanting to destroy it, now I find myself wanting to protect it. How the hell has that happened?” And I think that it has happened. Any time you forge relationships with people and you have a vested interest in their safety and well-being, you essentially raise the stakes. You pretty much do anything to protect that. I think he’s found himself, for the first time in 150 years, actually caring about something.

But Damon and Stefan will still be bickering, right?
The end all be all is he loves his brother, and his brother loves him. No matter how many times they’ve literally had the opportunity to kill one another, they’re still walking around. There are obviously major differences, but I think Damon and Stefan are gonna have to set those aside and actually focus on what’s the give and the take of letting that age-old vendetta go away. They actually have to focus and protect what they love, which is gonna be interesting, by virtue of the fact that Katherine is back.

Oh Katherine … is it bad that I just love to hate her?
Katherine is just one of those individuals you don’t want to f*** with … excuse my language, that you don’t want to mess with. I thought Damon was badass and just wrong in so many ways. Katherine is a sadistic, selfish bitch, and she is gonna play them like a fiddle. And she crushes Damon … she does, she crushes him … over and over and over again. [Laughs] Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. At this point, it’s like 10 — shame on me! [Laughs] Shame on Damon! He feels like such an idiot. And when we feel that stupid, what do we do? We lash out like a petulant child, you know?

Which is what he does best! Drinking, dancing in the rafters …
[Laughs] Exactly.

How soon after last season’s finale do we pick up in the Season 2 premiere?
Minutes, seconds … we start off in the finale. Literally. Which is great because to be honest with you, even just being away from the show for a couple of months, I sort of lost my footing on what was going on. It’s really helpful starting where we left off, and even going back a moment, back into the season finale. What’s starting to happen this season as well is someone we know very well … there are other vampires around now that were very unlikely candidates, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s fun to see dynamics change and to watch someone sort of figure out being a vampire when they’re so new at it. I’ve been doing it for a year and a half, and Damon’s been doing it for 150 years like Stefan, so you start to understand what it’s really kind of about. To watch someone go through the process of that is a lot of fun actually. [Laughs]

Lots of hazing, I’m sure. Damon doesn’t seem like the best teacher though …
Aw, Damon’s a good teacher! He just might teach you what he wants to teach you. [Laughs] Whatever’s most beneficial for him.

Now you have to pick, stake to your heart — do you think Damon is Team Katherine or Team Elena?
Well, Katherine is really just a figment of his imagination, and now sort of a tangible metaphor for his naiveté. It’s kind of a strange dichotomy because there’s a certain naiveté that comes with youth, and when you’re in love it’s amplified exponentially. To carry that around as you grow older — for 150 years — about a woman who you soon find doesn’t care about you at all. And then, for some reason, you meet her doppleganger, who is this sweet, innocent, strong young woman. I will be so bold to say that Damon’s not Team Katherine. It would help Damon if Katherine was gone or dead.

So then Team Elena it is!
Yep.

What’s been the scene in Season 2 that you think fans will flip over? Something particularly fun maybe?
There’s a pretty racy scene with Elena and Damon. I wouldn’t necessarily call it fun … there hasn’t been a lot of fun scenes to be honest with you. This isn’t a very fun time for Damon. But in the face of adversity and chaos, Damon still has a really good time. But [the scene with Elena] is steamy and it’s been waited for … you get a really big, huge glimpse into Damon’s vulnerability and what the power of attraction can do. That’s all I’ll say.

Any new vampire powers this season?
Just more powerful powers. Katherine is a lot stronger than Damon. New powers may be coming this season … Damon could use some new powers, babe!

How will Damon be handling Bonnie’s big threat?
Bonnie (Katerina Graham) can hold her own, unfortunately, with Damon. Anyone who can put Damon down on the ground — and not in a sexual way — is a problem. [Laughs] She’s a big problem for him. She’s a contender … I think if anything, she’s gonna prove to be useful. Katherine is going to be a major, major, major problem. Katherine is a bigger problem than Damon was in Season 1, because she’s three times more sadistic and seductive. I think what she wants is far greater than love, which is even scarier.

I think Matt Davis might be clinically insane, tweeting under a pen name, but fans are loving the back and forth you guys have on Twitter.
What is so amazing is, if in fact he is clinically insane, it is such a beautiful thing. I love that man. We totally have a bromance. Damon and Alaric and Elena spend a little bit of time together this season, and I think I can speak for Matt Davis and Nina Dobrev and myself when I say that we love being together on set. The three of us have a blast when we’re shooting stuff.

More of Zap2it’s Ian interview: “Love makes you stupid.”

On the Sept. 9 Season 2 premiere of “The Vampire Diaries,” the Salvatore brothers find themselves in a familiar situation.

They’re once again fighting over a woman. In 1864, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) were torn apart by their mutual obsession with Katherine (Nina Dobrev). Now, despite having 150 years to learn from their mistakes, they’ve both fallen for the less lethal (but equally gorgeous) Elena.

“Love makes you stupid,” Somerhalder tells me, by way of explanation, during Zap2it‘s exclusive visit to the show’s Atlanta set.  “Just like wars, famine, the BP oil spill, we have the attention spans of a mosquito, and we don’t remember what made us unhappy in history.”

Dobrev says that despite Elena’s involuntary thoughts about Damon, she still loves Stefan. “It’s always been Stefan,” she tells me. If that’s the case, Damon might be in for some serious heartbreak… again.

“It may be harder the second time around by virtue of the fact that you already know what it feels like for this to happen to you,” Somerhalder muses. “When you’re in love for the first time it’s the most unbelievable feeling, and the second time you get your heart broken you become a little more guarded. You become a little more sensible about how you throw your emotions around. But here’s the kicker… you do it again, and you do it again, and you do it again.”

This may be good news for all of the fans hoping to see Damon and Elena hook up this season. No matter how often they hurt each other, human nature (and vampire nature) could lead them to forgive the unforgivable.

Of course, the same could be said for Damon and Katherine.

Heartbreak is an experience that we can all relate to, but most of us don’t have to suffer its consequences for 150 years. After finally allowing himself to open up to someone again, if Damon is rejected, things could get bloody. “He’s either going to shut down or explode,” Somerhalder says, grinning dangerously. “And I welcome either one.”

For more of Ian’s thoughts on falling in and out of love, watch my video from our chat at the set of the Lockwood mansion. (Apologies for the shaky camerawork and occasional background noise – stealing a quiet moment was nearly impossible on such a busy day!)

Melinda on whether we’ll see Kelly again: “It would be great to go visit Mystic Falls.”

There’s still a lot to explore with your character, Kelly Donovan.

Yes, it would just be a matter of the network and producers and writers working that out. They’re two totally, absolutely different characters, which is great, but it would be kind of up to the network to decide if they wanted to see my face two hours in a row. Although, right now, Amanda is definitely a supporting character. She’s kind of mysterious and enigmatic, you don’t really know much about her and I don’t think there will be very much revealed in the beginning. But yeah, I talked to Kevin Williamson, I talked to Peter Roth, the head of Warner Brothers … but, yes, in a perfect world it would be great to go visit Mystic Falls and just ruin Matt’s life even more.

The TV Chick talks to Ian about second season

The Vampire Diaries is back on TV tomorrow night! The second season is picking up where it left off — a mysterious Katherine reappearance, Tyler Lockwood dealing with his new, scary self and his dad’s death and is Jeremy a vampire? Is he dead? So many questions which will all be answered tomorrow night! I can tell you this: there is no way you will be disappointed by the season premiere. I adored this show last season as it continued to get better and better while delving deeper into the mythology in Mystic Falls and the residents who cause trouble (human or vampire). I recently had the chance to catch up with the cast and producers at Comic Con. Ian Somerhalder talked about the upcoming season, his teetering humanity that we saw come out last season and how his motivations have changed since the first episode.

What excites you the most about this new season?
The challenges that await. It’s not going to necessarily be the funnest season for Damon. I think he’s going to be challenged a lot where I don’t think he was used to being challenged. There’s some things that wreak more havoc in Mystic Falls than he probably did in season one, and it’s going to be a problem. So those challenges are something to look forward to, because it’s not boring.

Are we going to keep seeing the humanity come out in Damon or is he going to go back to the way he was in the beginning of the season?
Well, I think when he finds out that it wasn’t Elena, I think he’s going to be a little pissed off. [But] probably yeah. I think that’s the only time you ever see it, is when he’s with [Elena]. Nina Dobrev will do that to you. There’s no two ways about it.

Do you think Damon’s motivations have changed since the start of the show?
Oh wow. Well, I don’t know. He still wants Katherine, like an idiot. You know, it’s weird. Love is a really blinding force. It forces us to do things — stupid things — every single one of us has experienced it.

Is he going to develop feelings for Elena or continue to try to get Katherine back?
I don’t know. Actually, to be honest with you, I don’t know.

What would you like to see happen?
I’d like to see him deal with — what I’d like to see is for him to realize she is a crazy, manipulative bitch and really a lot of where he comes from, his traits, he learned from her, and if he were able to look inward, at himself, and say “These are not very high quality traits of a person.”

What about when he finds out that Katherine came back for Stefan…
That’s another thing that’s just going to crush him.

How is his relationship with Stefan going to change because they sort of formed a tentative alliance?
A tentative alliance — well that’s the thing, I think that’s the interesting thought. That alliance may have to get stronger, because she’s going to reek havoc for both of them. Whether Katherine wants Stefan or Damon — Stefan wants nothing to do with her, for the most part.

The Vampire Diaries season one is now out on DVD and Blu-Ray. The second season premiere is tomorrow at 9 pm on the CW. Be sure to tune in!

Ian Somerhalder (a.k.a. the Sexy Beast Champion) talks ‘Vampire Diaries’ season 2

The Vampire Diaries
has been good to Ian Somerhalder: It earned him a spot on Entertainment Weekly’s 2009 list of TV’s Best Bitches and the title of Sexiest Beast in this summer’s popular EW.com bracket game, which saw readers rack up more than 1.5 million votes while whittling the 64-deep field down to his devilishly delicious Damon Salvatore and Twilight‘s saintly sensitive Edward Cullen. Shortly after his victory last month, we caught up with a humbled and grateful Somerhalder, who was already feeling the pressure that comes with the crown…

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Congratulations on Damon being named the ultimate Sexy Beast.
IAN SOMERHALDER:
[Laughs] That is so cool.

What would you like to say to the people who voted for you?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. It makes you realize the dedication of the fans, how much fun they’re having and how much fun they make us have. It’s the fans who are making the success of the show happen. We can’t thank them enough. We’re just doing the acting leg of it. Season 2 is starting [Sept. 9, 8 p.m. ET, The CW], and we’re gonna try not to suck. Wow, that’s a terrible pun. Let me reword that. You finish the first season of the show, and everyone worked their asses off, and the season went really well, and people liked the show. But then season 2 comes up, and you realize, whoa, we have more of a responsibility now. The heat is really on now. We cannot do a bad job. So, we are committed to making this a better year of television than last year. So that’s what I want to tell everyone: “Thank you, and literally, we’ll try not to suck.” [Laughs]

We know from promos that Katherine [Nina Dobrev as the vampire lover who essentially turned the brothers in 1864] says she’s returned for Stefan and never loved Damon. What can you tease about season 2?
Poor Damon. Katherine comes back, and it’s the chicken or the egg thing. In the story, Katherine obviously came before Damon, and Damon learned a lot of his antics from Katherine and then 150 years of cynicism. When I watch Nina be Katherine, it’s crazy, the similarity that you see between Katherine and Damon. She starts wreaking havoc in a very similar way that for most of season 1 Damon wreaked havoc — because he wanted something. You’re gonna see Damon in a way in which you haven’t necessarily seen him before dealing with Katherine and what happens after so many years of longing and wanting to be with someone, being hurt and let down in that extreme manner. It’s a lot of fun watching Katherine and how powerful and manipulative and sexy and crazy she is. It’s a lot of fun to play. It’s brutal for me. [In classic Damon delivery] Damon doesn’t always get what he wants now, which is boring for Ian, but great for the story.

After the show premiered last fall, you told us that you used to be jealous of Josh Holloway for the things he got to say and do as Sawyer on Lost. Now Damon is that character. What do you think it is about him that draws fans in?
I only know what I love about him: Though he may be doing things that are off our moral compass, Damon loves what he’s doing, and he’s enjoying the hell out of his life, even despite the amount of pain and anger that he has inside of him. A lot of the world has a lot of pain and anger, and it’s fun to watch someone who’s learned how to take their pain and make it fun. [Exec producers] Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec] have assembled a phenomenal writing team. When I watch the episodes, I don’t see Damon as me, because Damon is such a specific, strong character. It has nothing to do with me. It’s the way it’s written down on the page.

I recently spoke with Kevin and Julie for EW’s Fall TV preview issue [on stands Sept. 10], and he said something that I wanted to float by you: According to him, it’s a blessing when an actor is asked to be shirtless in a scene on The Vampire Diaries because of the heat in Atlanta. Is that how you look at it?
At this point, why not? Literally. Let me tell you something. I love the South. I’m from the South. I’m a Southern boy. You experience temperatures here that one just doesn’t understand until one is actually geographically here. I am watching our crew members melting like snowmen. It’s insane. When we are in wardrobe and it’s 100 degrees, with 60, 70, 80 percent humidity, you get this heat index and it just sticks to you. So yeah, why not? It is easier just to have your shirt off. I walk around set with it off half the time anyway now, so we might as well shoot it on camera. I’m imagining this isn’t gonna last much longer, but it is summer in Georgia, baby. That’s what you get.

Well, congratulations again, and good luck with season 2. I hope it doesn’t suck. I’m sure it will not.
[Laughs] If it doesn’t suck, I’m sure I’ll talk to you again soon. If it does suck, then I’ll know because you’re not gonna call me back.

Part two of Hollywood Crush interview with Sara Canning

For all the bloodletting, witchcraft and general supernatural nonsense transpiring daily in Mystic Falls, you’d think every citizen in town would be aware of the ooky, spooky goings-on. But there are a few who have yet to be clued in, including Elena’s Aunt Jenna. Even though her niece hobnobs with the undead, her sort-of-boyfriend is a vampire hunter and her brother-in-law was murdered in her kitchen by a deranged bloodsucker, she is, inexplicably, none the wiser. And “Vampire Diaries” actress Sara Canning, who plays Jenna, says it’s a good thing.

“I think one of the most important things about Jenna’s character is that she’s one of the only people left who aren’t in on everything,” she told Hollywood Crush. “There’s so much going on that doesn’t involve solely vampires—it’s just as much about watching relationships develop and crumble, and teenagers dealing with their parents, heartache and betrayal, and the history of the town—the sort of status system. It’s an important aspect that Jenna is holding down the fort in reality. As much as Jeremy and Elena can be swept up in this mystic world that is encompassing their own reality, they can always go home, and Jenna is really there for them.”

Sara isn’t sure when her character will catch on, saying she’ll likely be in the dark for a while still. “I have a feeling that she won’t [know] for at least the first part of this season,” she said, adding, “I think it’s kind of cool that she’s one of the only people left who’s really dealing with her own stuff—dealing with her master’s and raising two teenagers all of a sudden. I think it’s an important aspect of her character at this point.”

The Truth Behind…

A few weeks ago The CW released “The Truth Behind…” video interviews with the main cast. We posted YouTube versions of four of them (The Truth Behind Elena, Stefan, Damon and Bonnie) a while ago. Now, thanks to ItsDaveDL, we have YouTube versions of the other five as well! Unfortunately, there’s no The Truth Behind Alaric one. Looks like they were interviewed during “Founder’s Day” filming. No spoilers.

‘Vampire Diaries’ Star Sara Canning On Jenna And Alaric’s Future: ‘He’s Going To Be A Good Dad One Day’

If you ask us, it seems there are two types of “Vampire Diaries” fans: those who want to see Elena (Nina Dobrev) end up in the steady arms of Stefan (Paul Wesley) and those who want to see her fall hard for bad boy Damon (Ian Somerhalder). (To be fair, there’s probably a very, very small contingent rooting for ex Matt, but we’re not going to go there.) No matter where your allegiances lie in the Elena-Stefan-Damon triangle, I think we can all agree on one couple we want to see go the distance: Elena’s Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) and teacher-by-day, vampire-hunter-by-night Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis). So when we spoke with Sara in anticipation of season 2′s premiere (two more days!), we just had to ask about the pair’s future.

Unfortunately, Sara is almost as in the dark about the couple’s destiny as we are, even though they have shot scenes together for the upcoming season. “I think the audience and Matt and I have been waiting to see what is going to happen with them because it’s been so stop and start,” she said. “It’s been really kind of a cool development for Jenna because we see her meeting this new guy and recognizing that he could be really good for her. But she’s given up old habits and she’s not going to chase him down.”

Vague, yes, but Sara has heard a few rumors around set and said it probably won’t be smooth sailing for her and Matt’s characters. “I don’t think it’s going to remain all sunshine and rainbows,” she hinted. “I haven’t gotten the exact storyline, and I think things could change, but there’s so much conflict anyway. I think the fact that Alaric is dating Jenna, and knowing that her niece is dating a vampire and being in an alliance with these vampires—I think that alone will cause some pretty major conflicts. I think we’ll see some happy times and see how things progress from there.”

While highs and lows are likely in the forecast for Jenna and Alaric, Sara believes Alaric is a good match for Jenna. “I think Alaric is so different from a lot of the guys she’s dated. He definitely has a bad-boy streak…but he actually really cares about people,” she said. “He’s lost a wife, and Jenna just went through a major loss herself. She’s lost a major part of her family, and now she’s trying to fill that space for Elena and Jeremy. I think she just realizes that he has that life experience. She can look at him and say, he’s going to be a good dad one day. He’s that kind of guy.”

Check back tomorrow for the second part of our interview with Sara in which we talk about how Aunt Jenna manages to never get wind of all the supernatural stuff going on around her.

The TV Chick interviews Paul: “Season 2 is going to be a lot of acceptance for Stefan.”

The Vampire Diaries was one of my favorites from last season, prominently standing out as one of the best new shows in a crowded pack. Last season ended on a huge cliffhanger and this season brings a lot of surprises. There are supernatural beings and twists and turns that I’m not going to spoil for you. However, I can say that everyone is in for a treat because the premiere is absolutely amazing. And if you haven’t watched the first season, seriously, the show is out on DVD, what are you waiting for? At Comic Con, I spoke with the cast and producers of The Vampire Diaries. Paul Wesley talked about playing the darker side of Stefan, what his motivations are for the upcoming season and how is relationship with his super sexy brother Damon is going to change.

In season 2, how does Damon and Stefans’s relationship change?
From my perspective, for me, I’m broken hearted by my brother because as sociopathic and religious as he is, I still love him, and he knows that as well. I think at this point Stefan — he doesn’t empathize as much or care. He’s like “You know what, I’m not going to deal with this guy.”

What do you think Stefan’s motivations are for season 2?
Elena, Elena, Elena, Elena…he loves her. Also, coming to terms with himself — sort of the transformation. Season 2 is going to be a lot of acceptance for Stefan, being like “this is who I am.” He’s going to do other things. Be jovial. I think it will be nice.

What are his feelings for Katherine?
It’s a mix. He thought he was in love with her at one point and she’s the person that is responsible for his immortality. It’s heavy. [He looks at her with] disgust but at the same time a little bit of sort of interest.

Will Elena’s mortality ever be an issue?
I don’t think he’s come to terms with her dying one day.

Do you think she will one day?
Not any time on Vampire Diaries on the CW. It would be quite the triangle if it was just me and Damon stuck staring at each other. [Ed Note: I would really enjoy watching this show, too.]

How would you sum up the new season?
I’ve only really gotten the first two episodes. We just shot the first one and the second one we are just about to start, so I don’t know what’s going to quite happen. But I think a lot of the supporting characters are going to become very important. Obviously, Katherine is a huge part of season 2. And then I think between Damon and Stefan, there’s a bit of going back and forth, a role reversal. A little bit of that, I think it’s necessary.

Will we see Stefan go over to the dark side again?
I would imagine.

Do you like playing that other side of Stefan?
I love it. I love not necessarily the dark side — I mean I love that as well — I like Stefan to have some other tactics other than being victimized and accepting. And I want him to be more proactive.
